This is about the Dresden Files. If you don't know about the series you can look at this: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheDresdenFiles

I'm currently on the fifth book, Death Masks, and all I can really say is HOLY CRAP! These books are absolutely fantastic and I think it's an absolute shame that these books don't have as big a following as that teenaged wizard that everbody (myself included...) seems to care so much about.

I just wanted a thread to talk about the adventures of Harry Dresden, so discuss.

I love this series, and I'm pissed that I have to wait until sometime next year for Book 13 to come out

Dresden Files kicks ass. The characterization is superb, all of the characters are very human (even the inhuman ones), and of course the action and detective-ing is fucking awesome.

And perhaps the greatest thing is Harry's sheer smart-ass-ness and bravado, even in the face of death. Like "Well, this guy could kill me before I could blink anyway so I might as well tell him to go fuck himself."

Cause that is what death curses are for!

Does this series have a projected end or is it continuous?

It's supposed to end at book twenty but that won't be for a while. The writing is pretty solid though and the endings manage to wrap up their plots while leaving behind a few interesting threads to be carried on at a later time.

I recently discovered the Dresden Files...Needless to say I love it. I'm only on the first book but I know I will be buying the rest in the near future.

Oh man, this series. So good. A lot of series these days try that whole "modern-day fantasy with lots of pop culture and etc references," and it comes out awful. Butcher somehow manages to make it work perfectly. The humor balances great with the drama. The latest book left me numb for the rest of the day after finishing it. I even got my dad interested in the series, which is slightly surreal, because we don't usually share many interests.

Yeah I read maybe the tenth book (whichever one White Night is) and I really enjoyed it but didn't feel like investing in something that looked like it might have 50 books eventually if Butcher was left to keep writing little 300 page novels at 8 bucks a piece forever. 20 books I could maybe manage, though that is still a $160 minimum for much less pages than the average fantasy series I get into, which usually max out at maybe 12 books at 8 bucks a piece and the books are usually big freaking tomes like A Song of Ice and Fire.

I guess this is what ebooks are for, though.

Well in October of this year, there will be a collected re-release of all the various Dresden short stories, called Side Jobs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side_Jobs_%28novel%29). It'll also have a new short story that takes place 10 minutes after Changes, & is told from Murphy's perspective.

Also, does anyone other than myself listen to the audio book versions of the Dresden books? If not, I suggest you consider treating yourself to a listen. Audible.com has all the books available & I think they always offer new members a single free book for new memberships.

Of course, after the free trial, they start charging your card on a monthly basis. And its usually cheaper to buy used audio books rather than anything new. I just suggest Audible, because you can at least listen to 1 book for free, to see if you feel like checking out any of the other ones.

Still the books all are really done well, they're done by James Marsters (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0551346/) & he has a pretty good range of voices that he throws into his reading. He does a good Bob. I'm not sure if the TV Bob was based after him, or if he just mimics the same voice. Either way, its a near match.

There are a few MP3 samples from the 1st & 2nd book if you click them on Jim Butcher's website (http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/).

Definitely gonna get Side Jobs, and I'm actually dreading the Murphy POV short story :ohdear: it's gonna be so sad, but is certainly gonna be frigging awesome.

20 books plus a three book finale I've seen referred to as "The Apocalypse Trilogy".

But look at it this way. Side Jobs comes out in October (November, if you want to wait for the Audiobook version) & then the next book is due in March 2011. That isn't a horrible amount of time to wait.

And speaking as somebody who hasn't read any of the short stories, aside from the freebies Restoration of Faith (http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/restoration/) & Vignette (http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/vignette/), I'm looking forward to this. Plus, I'd like to know the back story behind some things that were brought up in Changes. Specifically stuff mentioned by Mab & the Archangel guy, Uriel.

If anyone's curious, he posted up the next book's cover art, along with the release date (3/29/11).

Again with the hat! Dresden doesn't wear hats, but in every cover that depicts him, he's wearing one. Plus, he might not even be wearing a duster anymore, so that could be wrong as well.

Grr...

If he knew how badass it made him look, he'd wear the hat

And here I pictured him wearing that badass hat when I read White Night!

Did anyone like the TV series? I hated it myself, even before I read the books.
