Thread for links to things that are funny/interesting. These can be links to the You Tubes or to Onion articles or to whatever all kind of thing happens to make you chuckle.

Please no:

- NSFW material

- Generally gross/weird crap

- Random links that aren't especially funny/interesting or have any discernable attempt at humor/fascination that you're posting for the thrill of slapping links to any random thing you scraped off the bottom of the internet.

ALSO

- Interesting or neat videos that may not be strictly funny but that you aren't looking to explicitly discuss or mock or whatever [i.e. it's not the focus of a whole topic] will fit in here just fine.

- a brief description that tells everyone what they're about to click on is appreciated

- in the general interests of promoting quality over quantity, no more than say, three links per post. Exceptions made if it is some kind of series that all goes together although if it's that huge of a series you'd probably do better to see if there's one index page or something for it that you can link.

- at least every third post has to have links! Tangential discussions about a particularly interesting one are still fine, just throw in some links for content too, and if your tangential discussion becomes longer than 10 posts or so you might want to consider starting a thread. Honestly though this one's not so much an enforced rule as a guideline.

Cock or not, they at least have a sense of humor about themselves, like with the PS3 pricing commercial.

Also, they have a good product. I found a few reviews of the Move and everyone thinks it's great (one that interviewed developers had some great things to say). I could post some hands-on reviews, but I don't want to turn this into an advertising thread. Especially because I've only found one review so far for Kinect. They said some great things, mind you, but I'd rather have a better balance if I delved into that territory.

I like the idea that these guys somehow want change but they go to ComicCon instead of some place that has a direct influence on society's production.

I kinda actually wish I was there to be in the protest against the protesters.

You wanna identify the idiots from the smart people? Let them say what they want.

But I really wish I was there now that I know that this church got one-upped by ComicCon attendees.

Way closer to Italy and Austria. I checked before making that post. They're about as close to France as they are to Turkey, but my ability to recognize European language is limited to French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, and, of course, English.

That leaves a lot of dead space.

I'm not arguing about it, just explaining my thought process. I've only met two people from that general area, a Bosnian cook and my Turkish business teacher, so I took a shot in the dark.

For those of you who didn't know, The Escapist has a new video segment called Extra Credits, where a guy with a helium voice discusses gaming industry issues. It's actually pretty interesting overall and as a guy interested in the industry, it certainly hits home for me in most cases. I don't always agree with what he says, like in this one (I very much disagree with the idea that if big companies form indie branches, the indie devs shouldn't own their own work and ideas), but on a technical level, he's pretty much spot on.

I'm posting this one in particular because one of the generic characters looks oddly familiar. XD

I was with him until he started basically saying that someone like EA should have an EA Lite that's kinda not but really EA but supposedly developing on a smaller scale.

Then he lost me.

The idea is that big publishers are supposed to form divisions specifically to scout and fund indie studios. Sort of like an internship, only instead of a person working for a company on one of the company's projects, it's a smaller studio working for a company on their own project and then the larger company taking a share of the profits.

What I DON'T like the idea of is how he suggested that the larger company also take all the rights to the game and pay the smaller studio peanuts. That's exploitation right there. Yeah, indie developers want to push change and aren't just in it for the money, but they should get at least similar pay for doing the same work and keep control of the property they created. It's counter-intuitive to insist that the big guys give the little guys creative freedom and then turn around once the game's done and take away everything they worked for. That's the opposite of creative freedom. If they want to nab a successful franchise, they have the money to buy the rights or can offer to absorb the team as a full-time studio. And then the indie guys should have a right to refuse. If they made a great game, why should they be forced to hand it off and start from scratch? It was THEIR WORK AND VISION THAT MADE IT GOOD!

Aside from that, the main reason that indie games cost less isn't that the devs work for less. They do, but that has less effect than having much smaller teams. A big-name game can have a team numbering well into the hundreds and still take five years or more to make. Indie games generally have teams you can fit into a single room and can take just as long depending on how large their game is. Telling large companies to keep funds tight with the promise of a large share of the profits in the long run is still treating them poorly until then. They don't need to be paid hand over fist, but adequate funding certainly would help morale along with keeping the rights.

Basically, the business model presented ignores incentive. It's GREAT for big businesses, but it's all take with no give. If you're going to be trying to reap the benefits indie devs have to offer, you have to give them a reason to go to you. Taking a share of their profits, paying them poorly, and then depriving them of even being able to continue on in their success if they so choose is a very poor offer.

That's what I mean that he lost me. Valve owning all rights to Alien Swarm might be good for Valve, but in other companies (Activision) this is the worst possible thing. If you're going to field an idea to a smaller company, be it licensing or just a unique idea (Dead Space started out this way), then hey, go nuts while you work on Medal of Honor.

One option that has kept Nintendo well run was enough money for six month intervals. They look at what's coming out, then cancel a project or green light it. Far cheaper but it keeps them working hard. But I would hate someone micromanaging me while I tried something completely unique.

No, no, no, you misunderstand. It's not getting a small studio to do work a publisher was going to do anyway. It's funding a small studio to do their own projects and the publisher taking the rights away from them, and if it's a hit, passing it on to the publisher's studios to continue.

Basically, it minimizes the loss on the part of big business, because the idea is that they don't have to throw as much money at the indie devs because they're the industry underclass, so if it flops, the publisher doesn't lose much and the indie studio can be discarded sans the rights to the game, and if it's successful, the publisher rakes the money in, discards the indie studio sans the rights to their own game, and then uses the rights to continue creating a successful franchise off the indie developers' backs.

It's a prime example of climbing the tower of success over mountains of the downtrodden. That kind of image is what the industry already suffers from with certain companies and it doesn't need to be encouraged.

Remember how I linked to that video game industry discussion video column? Forget it. Shiny baubles to the masses.

For those with tastes refined enough to accommodate reading, Seamus Young has a column at The Escapist that's been running for I don't even know how long and oh, my GOD, how did I miss this? (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points) I think after that utterly horrid view of how indie companies should be treated from the newcomer, I'm going to stick to someone with a much more sensible view of the industry.

Edit: I'll mention that this guy is also a programmer in the industry and therefore knows what the blink he's talking about. I seriously just found myself clicking another article because a title caught my fancy instead of going out and grabbing a burger. As a programmer myself, this is like finding a manual left by a mentor or a treasure map to lost gold or something.
