Yes, that's not a joke. Namco and Capcom are indeed pitting Tekken and Street Fighter characters together, announced about 10 minutes ago. Ono is having a conference at Comic Con right now where he announced this and Street Fighter Third Strike: Online Edition. Both these games will be hitting PS3 and 360 eventually. Also, Namco are developing their own version called Tekken vs Street Fighter.

I though this was weird enough to make a thread of it, yes. A liveblog is here (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3180511).

Hm, interesting. I like Tekken, I've always been a fan. I haven't really played much of Street Fighter, but from what I hear 4 was pretty good, but the again, as individual games they might be fine, and yet together they might suck. So, I'd be interested in the game, but it does have the potential to be lacking in quality.

Meh, I'd be more interested if they announced a new Soul game, ya know, something as pretty as Soulcalibur 4 but with customization form Soulcalibur 3.

Tekken and Street Fighter are not that far apart, but they are still not on the same league... sure, both breath combo and reversals in a tournament setting, but if i can have Ryu in one corner shoving Hadoukens on Eddy Gordo, i don't think that could be a fair fight...

If it's a 3D fighter Eddy can just sidestep that and juggle him to death. SF and Tekken are nothing like each other in terms of sheer gameplay so I wonder how Namco's version will make it work.

Yeah, the big question mark hanging over my head is made out of the word "projectiles." I don't recall Tekken having many (Angel/Devil's eye beams aside), where Street Fighter's basically defined by the things.

Tag ultras and tag partners are in, there's a lot of c/ping from SF4 but I bet that's al placeholder atm.

Looks more Street Fighter than Tekken, but it looks like fun.

It's the Capcom version. The Namco version will undoubtedly be more like Tekken. Here are some more screenshots (http://img195.yfrog.com/gal.php?g=1acee7184591c58dce46739.jpg).

Personally I hope they make changes from the SSFIV engine, since I'd rather not have this be literally SSF4 with Tekken characters.

Since they specifically stated we'd be waiting for the game, it's probably not coming out till 2012. It was labeled Build 0, so it's likely just something they threw together with SFIV engine to show at Comic-Con.

I'm curious if it's a straight tag fight, or if the other character it's just for assists/supers.

And on Namco's side, how they will handle fireballs.

Well, Namco isn't TOTALLY unaware of how to handle projectiles. They did have the eye beams for Angel and Devil. Granted, those two were more powerful than the others, IIRC, but they weren't unavoidable death rays, either.

I see Namco handling projectiles in much the same way as before. You can dodge them by side-stepping, they'll have a maximum range, and there will probably be some fancy hitbox stuff to make sure they aren't a magical "fuck you" button (the eye beams in some cases would go over opponents' heads just in their normal fighting stance). I see a lot of "duck to whiff the Hadoken" and "sidestep the fireball" in the future.

I'm actually much less certain about Capcom in this duet, honestly, because they've never had to compensate very hard for lack of range. It was easy enough to pick characters that had it or give popular ones compensating abilities, like Rogue's ability to steal powers. They're now dealing with a whole roster of melee fighters from a much more realistic (term used loosely here) world. Giving them all standard fireballs might work well enough, but Tekken fans will be disappointed at such a lazy solution. Conversely, they could implement side-stepping, but that would lose their loyal fanbase. They might maybe make the Tekken guys hit harder, but that turns the game into a session of cat and mouse as the Capcom roster shoots and runs. They might also do some sort of hit cancel to disperse shots, but that puts a time burden on the Tekken fighters as the Capcom guys spam shots and wait for an opening.

Really, I think the Capcom team transitions better to a Tekken fighting environment than vice versa.

Zangief clones. A roster of zangief clone would be totally sweet and you know it.

No they'll give the Tekken guys slides or other moves to get around fireballs. They do it with the existing melee characters in SF games so they'll do it here.

Smash Brothers Namco?

Also this game has a wakeup system that allows characters to roll forward or back, possibly allowing for Tekken-style tech traps? Or maybe it'll be totally invincible, I dunno. Ryu and Kazuya were seen doing chain combos in that video, so those are in.

What are the odds that one of these games ends up really good and the other one ends up really bad? or maybe... just maybe... they'll both end up really good. If not we'll have MvC3 and 3s Online at least.

Apparently we're not hearing anything more about this until April 2011, which is kind if disappoining. Oh well, there are plenty of other fighting games coming out between now and then.
