Ducktails. The best tv show ever to feature an all water-fowl cast. Let's talk about it!

so, Scrooge McDuck - Misunderstood philanthropist or greedy bastard?

First of all, it had no terrors that flapped in the night, so it wasn't quite the best. Secondly, the Beagle Boys weren't even birds, so it's already disqualified.

Other than that, yeah, Ducktales was some awesome shit.

Why can't he be both? He always seemed to be both to me.

God it's been nearly 10+ years since I've seen Ducktails.

Both Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck were great shows. But what about Duckula?

Oh that's clever. I've only seen Duckula once. Maybe twice in my childhood.

You know what I loved the most, Mighty Ducks.

Don't know why fully but I loved the hell out of that show. Though not a much as I loved Swat Kats.

Anyone caught the new Darkwing Duck comic? It's two episodes in and pretty fucking great. Far and away the superior comic sequel to one of my personal favorite cartoons (Sorry, Adam Beechen's Batman Beyond. You should have tried harder!).

Set several years after the show, "The Duck Knight Returns" finds Drake Mallard working as a cubicle drone for a massive corporation named Quackwerks, alongside former local law enforcement officers and St. Canard's apparently-reformed criminal element, including a number of his old nemeses that have been reintegrated into society, all of which having been put out of business by an army of crime-fighting robots developed by Quackwerks. Gosalyn attends a fancy private school with the money her father's earning, but with no crime left to fight Launchpad has moved back to Duckburg, and Drake himself is sinking into depression as he constantly reminisces about his former glory days.

However, Drake begins to uncover a number of suspicious activities being run by Quackwerks and dons the mantle of Darkwing Duck once more to investigate, while at the same time a group of his old enemies, led now by Quackerjack (who has an as-of-yet unexplained hate-on for Negaduck, who so far hasn't appeared), has taken up arms in a mad quest for revenge against the company responsible for putting their lives of crime to an end and forcing them to serve Quackwerks as faceless corporate deskjockies.

It's a pretty fun read, and stays true to the spirit of the old cartoon, but is definitely playing to the adults who watched it as kids more than trying to just aim at today's kids, which is an impressive move for Disney. I definitely recommend checking it out.

The other shows were great, too, of course, but yeah. Also, fuck you the song is in my head now and probably will be for a couple of days.

Based on the comics, he was honest and fair,n ever intentionally screwing anyone out of thier honest share. But he also ruthlessly exploited an unfair system to own fair more than he needs to. Could go either way.
Als was a rocking show.

I remember then they had nega-negaduck, when they split good and evil, then did it AGAIN. The resulting entity was then a living personification whose very existence corrupted all around him. Disclaimer: memory might be imperfect. But it was awesome

When you remember that A: money is basically a shared suspension of disbelief B: he never actually spends any money for concrete goods if he can possibly avoid it, he actually consumes a relatively modest share of real resources, with the exception of the unusual quantity of airplane fuel he uses dragging his relatives around the world. He might have a detectable disinflationary effect in the larger economy, as money that goes into the Bin is effectively destroyed.

As far as I remember money in the bin is only the money that had sentimental value to him and his actual fortune is much larger and tied up in stocks and shares thus activelybeing used.

Woah, woah, woah, woah... woah!

Wait, wait, wait. You mean there's someone somewhere out there who's seen the show, who doesn't want to try it?*

Woah!

Also, on a slightly related note, the entire line-up the the Disney Afternoon Block Party was really quite amazing. Gummi Bears paved the way for Ducktails which paved the way for Dark Wing Duck, which paved the way for the (ever so slight a step back) Tailspin, which paved the way for Gargoyles, which might have been my defining childhood show (aside from David the Gnome; Dragon Ball, not Z; and Batman [later renamed the Animated Series]). Regardless, Ducktails is certainly on my all-time top shows. Certainly it was one of the most influential. And the comics had me convinced that one could actually smell gold, and grow trees out of the stuff (all done with the same story, actually!).

Also, what eventually happened to Huey, Dewy, and Lewie? I mean, I don't recall why they left their Unca' Donald and ended up with Uncle Scrooge in the first place. I believe their parents sent them to Donald at one point, for some reason explained in a brief note (if I remember the really old cartoon canon correctly, which I might not). But I don't recall why they came to Scrooge.

Also, it was quite touching, and bizarrely telling when Scrooge, affected by a love arrow, chose his romantic love over money, and his nephews over his own romantic happiness. That... sheds some serious light on the things he finds important.

*Slightly off-topic, I read a comic graphic novel recently that actually referenced this. It was about a wealthy frog who wished for a pool of gold large enough that he could dive in without hurting his nose. I believe the thing was called the Eternal Smile, or some such. Anyway, it's a big yellow thing, and is quite good. I'd give it a read at some point.

memory is fuzzy, but Donald did send them to live there. For some reason he couldn't take care of them anymore.

Donald joined the Navy and got shipped out to sea for an extended tour, but obviously couldn't take the boys with him and had no one else for them to stay with (Daisy was kind of a bitch anyway). So he just threw them at rich old Uncle Scrooge and took the fuck off.

Nique

For some reason they ended up living with Donald again in the VERY poorly concieved 'Quack Pack' show that made no reference whatsoever to Scrooge and then also the entire population of Duckburg besides them was turned human.

On the Donald in the Navy thing - my favorite B character was Donald's commanding officer. He had a cool sort of enraged John Wayne thing goin' on.

EDIT: Admiral Grimitz.

I love how Huey, Dewey and Louie are absolute hell-spawn in the original Donald Duck cartoons, going out of their way to cause their Uncle Donald physical and emotional harm, yet by Duck Tales the trio are just good-natured adventurous scamps. Oh silly Disney.

Personally I liked Talespin and Rescue Rangers better than DuckTales, but Darkwing Duck was always a favorite of mine. He's the terror that flaps in the night!!

And I remember watching Mighty Ducks too. In retrospect it was a pretty horrible concept, but I liked the show. I liked Tanya and Duke best.

Anyways, I haven't watched DuckTales since it originally aired. Except for the movie. I watched that long after the show was off the air. Still, it's been more than 10 years since I've seen even that.

I do kinda remember an episode where they basically did the Odyssey. Was there an episode like that? My memory may be tricking me.

There were a few like that - lost temples, Greek mythology, Norse mythology. My favorite was the series opening arc about the temple of the gold sun which was, frankly, epic.

Really, that's one of the things made Ducktails so great. They borrowed, very heavily, from other mythologies, and, while "kidifying" it somewhat, and translating it to animals, they worked hard to leave the main elements of the stories intact. It was really impressive.
