There are no words: (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/the-colour-of-sonic-interview)

Eurogamer: How do you feel when you read old-school Sonic fans slagging off the Sonic franchise and what it's become?

Takashi Iizuka: The fundamentals of both games, the 3D Sonic or the 2D side-scrolling games, are the same. Sonic is all about the speed and the platforming. It just comes down to how the gameplay differs when you're playing in 3D and 2D side-scrolling.

I understand there are differences in the ways users interpret the 3D side than the fans who particularly like the 2D classic side of the game.

This is why we're releasing two different types of Sonic games this year - to please the 2D classic fans who have been playing from the Genesis [Mega Drive]. Sonic 4 is more for those fans.

There are also fans who like the 3D Sonic games which have been released in the past couple of years. Sonic Colours is probably more for the users who appreciate the 3D side of Sonic.

Eurogamer: But how do the negative comments make you feel? Do you ignore them?

Takashi Iizuka: It's more that those fans are not positive towards the recent 3D Sonic games because we've been releasing only 3D Sonic games in the past couple of years.

It's hard to please both 2D and 3D fans at the same time, in the same title for instance.

This is why the team decided to release two different types of Sonic games. It's always hard to dodge every negative perception or make everybody happy with just one title. So we're giving two options to the users.

So, either way, you'll be pleased.

[...]

Eurogamer: LittleBigPlanet is a platformer that allows players to create levels and customise characters. Any plans for similar features in future Sonic games?

Takashi Iizuka: It's something the team is not looking into at the moment. Sonic games, it's pretty clear that how good the level design is directly affects the quality of the game.

The team believes the speed and the tempo is crucial. Sonic Team are the professionals at doing it. It's hard to leave it up to the users because it's quite difficult.

We have, however, allowed this feature through PlaySEGA, which allows our users to create their own levels. But in terms of future Sonic games, this is not in the plan.

How long can someone be in this type of denial?

Hey, the recent 2D games weren't half bad. The GBA Sonic games weren't too bad either...

The Sonic Adventure games aren't too bad.

I mean, they're dumber than the Genesis games, but they aren't godawful like most 3D Sonic games.

They are making money. Sonic Team is being paid, to be Sonic Team.

It boggles the mind.

You see... he said Enjoy, not Love praise or cherish.

You can Enjoy Sonic and the secret Rings, you just can't fucking love it.

Oh dear god this line is priceless. I'm 100% sure there are people out there that could make levels that are wayyy better than anything Sonic Team could come up with, since it seems like they wasted all their "professionalism" on the early Sonic games, and if they're a professional at anything now then it's making horrible games.

Well, somebody must be buying all this crap otherwise Team Sonic would have been out of business years ago. If nobody bought it, they wouldn't still be making the shit stuff.

You all have only the "fans" to blame.

To be fair to they guy, being negative about your own games would get you shredded by your own company's PR people. Especially in a Japanese company as they're all about looking monolithic.

Fixed that for you.

Not really. I remember a look back at the Sonic forums when they were doing the character countdown for Project Needlemouse showed a buttload of people saying how much of a betrayal it was that the game's cast wasn't going to include all eleventy billion characters from the franchise. Some key sentiments were along the lines of "Sonic, to me, is all about the big cast of characters, and it always has been; this is a betrayal" and "I swear to God, SEGA, you will rue the day you decided to change what you had going, the bombs are on the way to your mailboxes, RUUUUUUUUUE!" only with a lot more typos and a lot less coherency.

In short, I died a little inside because it appears that an entire generation of kids were raised with no knowledge of the SNES games that older fans look at and cite as being the series when it was good and how it should be. These deprived individuals have established themselves as "the fans" through sheer vocalism and have been the driving force behind SEGA's decisions for only God (or maybe Wikipedia) knows how long to the dismay and despair of everyone else.

Sorry, folks, brain's taxed to its limits right now, which is why I haven't been around as much. I'm lucky I'm not typing this all out in C++ code from all the scrambling I've been doing to finish up that class. XD

I totally meant Atari. :P

So Sonic Team is STILL being stupid huh. Well so much for Sonic Colors (Wii) and every other sonic game from now on. (So much for getting a Wii)

Really you only have the kids to blame since they don't know that sonic was about platforming and speed not just speed and good music (granted these things are important).

Furries aren't to blame seeing as they are mostly against most of the new sonic games Post Adventure 2.

They're against only cause those games don't introduce enough new characters for them to slash with their "original" ones.

I may have a hate on for the furred kind, but I think that statement is wrong and insulting. Just cause the game features blue hedgehogs and red echidnas does not mean its strictly for furries. I mean, every mascot has their own different group and labelling furries as the cause for Sonic's problem is hardly fair.

Besides Sonic's furry problem didn't rise up in till SatAM Sonic, and the comic based off of it appeared.

Which is the best thing to come from Sonic since the old school ones.

Furry enthusiasts don't have a thing to do with the fiasco Sonic Team embodies.

I did not blame furries for TEAM SONIC being stupid.
I commented on why furries weren't happy with most of the newer games in the franchise, not on the impact their weirdness has on the franchise itself.

Also, it was a joke. Apparently not a good one, since nobody got it. I'll have to work on that.

On top of that, the people who are inclined towards slash and shipping, furry or no, are not going to be deterred by a dearth of characters to ship and slash, especially when there is no such dearth to begin with. And that's not even counting the OCs that are, themselves, shipped and slashed with the main cast and with each other.

As if only furries are writing slash fanfiction! I've read many a non-furry slash fanfiction!

Er, I've heard about many of them, I mean!

Y'know I'm not really into Sonic but wasn't the first 3D Sonic on Dreamcast kind of okay or were people just not aware of how much it sucked because they were going "OMG SONIC IS IN 3D!"

Aerozord
08-04-2010, 01:56 AM
sonic 3D sucked, but in a way you'd expect in the early days. Jumping was horrible, homing attack in the more recent ones solved it. But it was so slow. Like, you know when you move mario without using the run button? Yea that, probably slower then that. They never truely lost this because there are always parts where you have to slow down in the new ones.

The more complicated the path the slower you have to go, its the biggest weakness in 3D

I don't really care about the backlash I'm gonna get from this post, but I still had a lot more fun playing most of Sonic Unleashed's Day levels than I did with any of the old 2D Sonic. If not for the god awful Night levels completely missing the point and the annoying medal collecting that required searching every part of the Night levels, then it would've been my favorite Sonic game. Besides Sonic Unleashed, 3D Sonic has definitely sucked though.

Unleashed's day levels were pretty fantastic. I disagree that they were better than Sonic 2D, but they were still ace. (Sonic classic wins for the music at the very least)

Meh it started out good, got bad, went into a "lets make it darker and edgier and flood it with ridiculous amounts of drama" and got worse, then they switched writers and it got better.

Sonic actually feeling bad for Robotnik/Eggman after causing him to go insane after beating him for the last time was great. The "Reason why you suck speech" verbal beating he gave him while curb stomping his last big mech as regular old Sonic was great. He got better after 3 to 5 chapters though.

You know I'm talking about the Archie's comics one right?

yea and the related cartoon, though I am more familar with the cartoon. The comics were a pain to get around here so I only had bits and pieces of stories. Like Mech-Sonic arc. Killed me that I couldn't read the rest of that storyline
