View Full Version : Why stuff you like is really quite shit

Professor Smarmiarty

In this thread, people say their favourite things and then everybody else explains why they are awful. Or you guys post a bunch of awful stuff that you like and then I call you horrible human beings. However it goes.

My favourite thing is the movie "X the man with X-ray eyes", a thrilling yet cautionary tale about hubris and the limits of endeavour, the thirst for knowledge and the terrible horrors that come with quenching that thirst.

I'm a terrible human being, who is drunk half the time, is unshaven, unwashed, being a dick to people to see what happens.
There are no features that I possess, physical, mental or social in me, that would ground this decision of yours except in the most horrible of tastes.

No one seems to be posting along the OP's guidelines.

Yugioh is terrible, but you seem to already know that and why. It's a seemingly never-ending series of the same fight so that some dude can ACTIVATE HIS TRAP CARD and make numbers add and subtract from other numbers. I guess I'd be able to make a more scathing critique if I'd watch the show.

I don't enjoy picking favourites, save for some cases, but here's something I'd enjoy hearing others rip apart despite liking it: Gundam Wing. (this is in part motivated by having recently put Endless Waltz on to fall asleep to the other night and remembering how ripe for mockery the series is)

Gundam Wing? Oh it was pretty decent, don't get me wrong, but it really licked some nasty unshaven balls when it came down to having a social life and missing ONE FUCKING EPISODE, at which point you'd be permanently and irrevocably lost in the storyline if you'd not seen it all before. And of course when Toonami was showing it on Cartoon Network, they'd only run certain stretches of the show anyway, so you were never quite sure when or where what began. That, and Hiro's unbelievable obsession with suicides that never really quite happen and blowing up his gundam all the damn time. Srsly? Take the most awe-inspiring mech and blow it up over and over nearly every third episode? Come on now... you never saw the Deathscythe being treated that way. Troa (sp?) had respect for his shit.

And you're totally right about Yugayho. How long is that series gonna go on, anyway? It's getting about as bad as pokemon. It could be worse.. could be like digimon, but nobody cares about them anyway.

So here's some Fifthfiend bait: I really liked Chrono Trigger.

Professor Smarmiarty
08-04-2010, 01:10 PM
I'm going to have to mass attack all your tastes- in rapid succession.

im gonna say something so awesome that i dont think anybody can run this into the ground: creed.
Pearl Jam but without the good bits (not that there are many). I don't think you're being serious though.

I like Minecraft
Building shit with cubes... that's very 5 year old kid playing with blocks.

I liked Star Trek Enterprise.
Pretty much they took the worst episodes of the old star trek series and reshot them with a new cast, worse acting, worse writing and hugely hampered by canon. They had to get the oldies in to save the series and it was still a pile of shit.
I like Final Fantasy...
Generic, shallow, predicatble plots, weak characterisations, overuse of grinding as a game lengther- that's pretty much the series as a whole. Also the games are so significantly different it suggests to me as much as someone who says "I like food" - ie no developed palette whatsoever.
And a couple of Linkin Park Songs
Trying to be punk but the only aspect of punk they retain is a complete lack of musicality.
And the Dark Knight
I've covered this one before but in short:
Terrible camera work, action, tremendously scattergun moral messages, gigantic plotholes, characters changing their beliefs/ideas/actions in seconds,, paper-thin plot with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

I like Ke$ha, A Very Potter Musical, and hating you. :3
I don't know any of this shit.

I like Bleach! :) Best manga ever! mirite
Japanese are a sociopathic, xenophobic race of crazies and all their work is suitably tainted. Also reliance on wackiness.

I like watching midgets wrestle.
I'm pretty sure that's illegal- obviously illegal things are the product of a sick and devious mind.

I like Say Anything, the band but the movie too.
See Linken Park
I also love the Street Fighter movie for obvious reasons.
Fighting movie without Bruce Lee. Also Ryu can throw fireballs all the time- why didn't he just fireball everyone to death?

I also happen to like Final Fantasy (XIII is awesome, sorry greed), Pokemon, Metallica, Tenacious D, Brutal Legend, Metal Gear Solid and a whole shit load of things other people seem to think is totally lame.

Fuck 'em. If I like it, it must be awesome.
Covered final fantasy, Pokemon replaces crack addiction with flashing light adddiction, Metallica are basically "We think we're metal but we better tone it down so we can sell it to everyone" ie opposite of metal so they are in total 0 music, Tenacious D are- play a simple song, drop some lyrics over it, that shit is what we do at parties and if us useless fucks can do it anybody can, Brutal Legend- oh fuck I'm so metal I'm playing a videogame- see Metallica, Metal Gear Solid- instead of letting you play a game we're going to make you watch an awful awful movie!

I like OtakuSon, he's a prty kuul guy amirite
Before my time, but he was kind of a dick from what I've seen.

For seriousness (and no one can argue against it) I like Firefly/Serenity
Space as wild west oh I've never seen that before.

I also like Pardus, a web browser MMO (http://www.pardus.at/)

I linked it so you guys can go look at it and than try and diss it.
It's from Austria. Have you ever been to Austria? If you had you would know I need to go no more.

Naruto, in a mostly unironic matter.

See Japan

So here's some Fifthfiend bait: I really liked Chrono Trigger.

The plot doesnt intergrate time travel at all- it might as well be set in one time with all the different places being different countries- the endings are mostly quite similiar with only minor differences and it's easy as fuck.

You dudes missed hte point of this thread- you supposed to post good things, things that you like, not awful things.

I like taking my morning bowel movement in a safe, clean, private environment.

The lack of excitement in your life will lead to your death through low blood pressure. Also oversanitation is actually deadly as fuck.

Things I like:
Final Fantasy VI
Gameplay is simple to break and for a game that is basically packaged on the story the ending is atrociously short, jsut some videoclips of characters running around. Awful.
Pulp Fiction
Hey look, I can sit in the film archive, get a whole lot of old films, splice them together- genius. I will try to put in as little original stuff as possible as those are the worst parts of the movie.
Boonedock Saints
All the recycled garbage of a tarantino movie but without its style.

Criticizing the American Government even though I refuse to vote because I believe its pointless as our system is broken.
Good end result, questionable logic on getting there. So I'll give you a point.

Arguing with people who are deeply rooted in their religious faith.
As Zizek shows us, atheists are the best christians and attempts to argue being religion/atheism are fundamentally flawed and rely on ideas of the 19 century.

Tax Season (my wife is a tax nut and I get a huge refund every year)
So you like starving your fellow worker?
Cigars
Killing you and actual taste is awful.
Starcraft Characters are unlikeable and are poorly written- their action sthrough the game are random and ill-determined.
Book Stores Only good for selling Mills and Boone to bored housewifes and propping up a deluded publishing industry. Real value is found in the hands of your fellow comrades and in direct from the printer purchasing.
Well made coffee A relic of when we needed to show our cultural superiority by stealing other cultures foods.
Coffee with chocolate raspberry creamer and a slice of red velvet cake for breakfast during the colder months. You already said coffee. What the fuck is a creamer and why would you eat velvet. That's stupid.

I thought that was a fan movie you made in your basement at night while you were drunk, apparently it's a real movie....how odd.

I've watched every episode of this show and at no point does a circus fly. It is full of lies and chicanery and everyone who likes it must be of a similar disposition.

My only response to this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG184YzkDX8)

I am sure that you have a whole bunch of things to say about this list:

Dragonlance (As a campaign setting, not so great. The novels, especially The War of the Souls trilogy and the Dark Disciple trilogy, are very good and could definitely stand on their own.)
The original Yu-Gi-Oh! (I have all of the available DVD's except for Capsule Monsters. Who doesn't like a series about a kid who thinks he can save the world by playing a card game?)
Harper's Island (You take a slasher horror movie and turn it into a thirteen part dramatic series which no one else seemed to like. I posted a thread about it and 0 responses. That was the start of my seperate Threadkiller breakdowns, but I am feeling much better now.)
The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind (It surely has flaws, such as excessive violence and sex, and it gets preachy towards the end, but overall it was a good series of books. Unfortunately, Goodkind seems to be a one-trick pony, The Law of Nines was basically a rehash of Confessor that takes place in "our" modern world.)
The X-Files (I loved all nine seasons, and the first movie. I was disappointed with I want to Believe, since it was basically a remake of the MST3K classic, The Brain That Wouldn't Die.)
Since we are on that subject, Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Take a guy and two robots, force them to watch horrible movies, and comedy ensues.)

That is all I have for now. ;)

Dragonlance (As a campaign setting, not so great. The novels, especially The War of the Souls trilogy and the Dark Disciple trilogy, are very good and could definitely stand on their own.)
Fantasy is the shitpile of literature, a reliance on flashy action and crazy magic to distract you from the lack of quality, with races standing in for characterisation and killing the baddy standing in for character development. It's pretty much authors who read the gothic novels and completely missed the point- taking the fantastic and supernatural elements without the greater elements of artisitic and societal criticism.

The original Yu-Gi-Oh! (I have all of the available DVD's except for Capsule Monsters. Who doesn't like a series about a kid who thinks he can save the world by playing a card game?)
The card game as rendered on the videogames is hideously easy to break as in I managed to beat the story fights that you were supposed to lose (he had a stacked deck and cards far better than you could acquire in game).
As for the show- Yugi doesn't save the world tghrough card games, he saves it through some kind of crazy set of magical rituals which involves cards but in no way has any coherency as any form of game. Basically we are witnessing the ramblings of a mental patient but whereas that could be quite good (such as the Cabinet of Dr Caligari) Yugioh pitches the ball too straight in that Yugi's delusions are clearly seperated from his non-delusions (through the medium of card games) thus allowing the viewer perfect knowledge and oncoming boredom.

Harper's Island (You take a slasher horror movie and turn it into a thirteen part dramatic series which no one else seemed to like. I posted a thread about it and 0 responses. That was the start of my seperate Threadkiller breakdowns, but I am feeling much better now.) [/QUOTE

Re:Axecop and Dr Mcninja
AxeCop is suspiciously close to AxisCop which is basically the gestapo so if you cheering him on you love Nazis.
Dr Mcninja is a product of our corporatised, faceless franchised society (Mcninja indeed. M.C. Ninja would be a different story) which is culturally devoid and thus worthless.

fourth is just a propoganda film

If by propaganda film you mean the most effortless summation of an entire genre in a single film, a perfection shorn of frivolous nonsense, a distillation of what is a film in the contemporary sense, of what is necessary and what is not then yes it is just a propaganda film.

I love everyone, and I love fire!

Oh, I've been watching Battlestar Galactica lately, it's pretty good. Do that one.

That's the show with those robots the Cylons, right? Those who appear human but have "silica pathways" in their brains and spines that tend to emit red light?

Oh, but the glow wasn't meant to represent something literal?
So, the Cylons are so much like humans internally that they can't be detected by medical examination?

Forget about those "silica pathways" (and the plot point that hinged on them,) lets just decide that the Cylons are just like a different sort of humans. There, that certainly just made that "enemy among us" plot easier to write! And, hey, how else are you going to write in human-cylon hybrids with blood that cures cancer once but not twice.

And lets not forget that when your main concern is to try and break a constant cycle of slavery, rebellion and genocide that spans interstellar space and (uncounted) thousands of years of history, the best possible solution is to give up your civilization and technology, and settle on a planet inhabited by primitive humanoids.

Here's the thing about the X-files. After the first episode if you had to guess what it was about you would guess government conspiracy, working with aliens. That is what was hinting at. Then they spend 9 seasons dicking around denying this idea and then, oh wait yes that is exactly what is happening. What the fuck was the point of those 9 seasons again?

The point of those seasons was every episode that didn't have anything to do with the greater alien/government conspiracy arc. Most of the episodes, in the early seasons.
