View Full Version : A tale of subspace crossed lovers: Scott Pilgrim vs the Game

Bought the game earlier today and I'm loving it so far. Streets of Rage step aside this is my new favorite beat-'em up. The music is great. The fights against the regular enemies provide a challenge, but if Patel is any indication of what future bosses offer then they seem like they'll be easy.
The codes in the game act as a nice reference to other games.

I want to say it's only going to be available on PS3(now) and X360(Aug 23rd, i think). However I don't know that for sure.

Then you may want to sit down: Not coming to either, and there's no word on the soundtrack coming out as well.
Being a UK 360 owner, I have to wait till the 25th for both the film and the game.

Send an angry letter to Ubisoft every day for a year. It'll either persuade them or they'll just stop opening them.

Well, sucks that I'm German then, and probably have to wait till next year to see the movie OR import the DVD from the UK as soon as it gets released. Har.
Meanwhile I'll naively hope that the game gets a Wii/DS release some time.

This looks interesting, but this review (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/111/1111280p1.html) suggests its near impossible to play with just single player. How true does that play out?
Or is this a bit overstated?

If you don't block, you're going to have a hard time completing some of the waves. It just takes a bit of beat-em-up skill. In the end if you learn what enemies do what attacks and learn how to avoid or block them, you are good. Only boss my roommate had any trouble with solo so far was the Vegan ex. It's definitely more fun to coop though and it's clearly designed for it, so solo can be overwhelming if you aren't good at beatemups as you can't just spam attacks.
EDIT: Im currently building an arcade cabinet and am throwing my old xbox in it. This is definitely going on it when it comes out on xbl.

First stage was easy enough alone, even on Rough Rider (medium). Second stage seems like it might be hard if they're smart and mix in some enemies with these annoying camera guys that stun you anytime they take a picture.
Sadly, I don't know anyone that lives near me so unless they patch in online mode later I'll have to solo the whole thing.

Loving this game so far, but I too am forced to play though it solo. It's not too hard, though I was forced to replay the first 3 levels a couple of times, and was max level on Scott by the time I hit level 4. At that point I also spent a lot of money on CDs and books to boost my stats, so now it's not too bad. Now levels take me about two tries to beat them, the first time to get used to the enemies and the boss (which usually kills me) and the second time to kill everything in sight.
Basically I'm playing the game with the patience I reserve only for Megaman games and the like, and I'm doing just fine.

This game angers me. It's not the challenge playing solo that is so upsetting. No, I like the challenge. It's not even the bug where the music on the overworld stops playing and I can't open my stats or movelist or the start menu until it starts again. No what bothers me is the constant crashing. It's happened about 8 times now, maybe more, where I go into a level, or reach the end of a level, or transition between two stages when the screen fades to black and just stays there. Nothing works, the game is frozen. Basically any time the screen fades to black runs the risk of crashing the game. The worst part is that it keeps getting worse, with the crashes becoming more frequent. I had 3 in the last 40 minutes. Such an awesome game is being ruined by an extremely game breaking bug.

Oh wow. Yeah, I am, I'm downloading the Mafia 2 demo. I'm gonna go try it out now.
Edit-- Right so I stopped downloading the Mafia 2 demo and played 'till the shopping district with Ramona on the hardest difficulty (I already beat the game with Scott and maxed out all his stats, and I want that one trophy for beating the game on hard solo). So yeah, no freezes, then I go into the record store, buy one of every CD ('cept the last 'cause I didn't have the cash) and when I go out, the game freezes with a view of the street, with Ramona standing outside of the CD shop, everything frozen, the shop music still playing, and the word "Ramona" centered on the lower half of the screen, in the same size/font as the names on the character select screen. But yeah, the old freezes are gone it seems, and I'm hoping this new freeze is a much rarer affair, since it's the first time it happened to me.

Downloaded the demo last night, was pretty fun. Think I may get the full game. I can definately see how it could be hard solo, at least on the higher difficulties, but that's probably a good thing, seeing as it's going for an old fashioned style retro vibe, and all old games like this were made of titanium nails, so that's good.
Anyone know if it comes with offline multiplayer? Cos that would make it extra awesome.
EDIT; Ok, bought the game. Holy crap you guys weren't kidding, this game is rock. Had to restart 3 times in 2 levels so far, once because at the start of each level you don't regain health (I started with 20, and no more lives), then got crushed/exploded/burnt/electrocuted through the 2nd level repeatedly until I was too battered to go on, then I got my arse handed to me on the 3rd ex with his cheap as shit electrical and force choke attacks after being pummelled through every godamn wall on the way outside (seriously, how the fuck are you supposed to keep ahead of that attack in solo?).
After that last one I decided to take a break, because I really hate having to do entire damn levels over again. Oh and all this was on the easiest difficulty and after I'd spent every bit of cash on stat increases.

Oh man, Supreme Master difficulty is making me it's bitch. I'm at level 5 with Ramona, and I have yet to get to the shopping district. The goddamn shopping district. I did it once but then the game froze. I've got like $200 too, but I can't fucking use it on upgrades, which would make it sooo much easierrr!!!
Oh and Hawk, 1) Yes it has offline co-op, but no online (though people think the online will be patched in, and that's what the radio-tower level will be for, since nobody has gotten to the radio tower yet)
and 2) The way I got through those walls was sprint + triangle attack. That managed to break the walls in one hit (sometimes two, with the second attack just being a regular punch), and it allowed me to keep my momentum. And yeah, once you're fighting Todd in the alley it's just a matter of using a dash attack, then running away, and repeating that until he uses his crazy vegan arm blast. Then you just deal damage to him when the vegan police pop up and weaken him. Also, block button is your best friend in that fight, especially when he makes all the garbage and stuff fly around.
The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk
08-14-2010, 02:17 PM
Yeah I thought it looked like there was no online co-op. Wierd, you'd have thought that would be there from the off, seeing as it's usually the other way round.
Thanks for the tips though, I never thought about headbutting through the walls, seems kinda obvious now. I'll have a go at him a little later on and see how it goes.
EDIT; holy fucking christ the last boss is a fucking twat! I got stuck in a perpetual loop where he just punched me off the ledge repeatedly every time I respawned with no way to break the cycle. I lost all my lives on that section alone, and this was after having to do the first part of the level again anyway because I only had a single life to start with. This game is really goddamn annoying.

The "Radio Tower" is actually Joseph's room. It's nothing but a sound test room. On the Rankings screen press L1(x3), R1(x3), L1, R1.
I've also started Supreme Master mode and have a level 6 Scott so far. I'm trying to get the money early to pay off Scott's debt. I'm really tempted to use my level 16 maxed Kim to do the mode instead.

Yeah that happened to me briefly. Though turns out if you get in the right spot on the lower part of the ledge, you can avoid his attacks without even moving and hack away at him. But yeah, I lost two lives to that goddamn loop before I managed to get out of the way (don't ask me how, I don't remember :S).

I was tempted to do this too, but then once I finally got to the shopping district after hitting level 9, while holding $200 I said "screw it, I'm gonna buy some CDs". Basically 30+ stats makes the whole thing sooo much easier!!! I think what I'm going to end up doing is farming the money with my maxed out Scott, then plugging in a second controller, and just give the money to Ramona to unlock the shop.

I've managed to get to the midpoint of level 3 on Supreme Master without any kind of stat boost. But the giant mob you fight at that point keeps getting me so I guess I'll go look for this CD shop. I don't think I've ever seen it.

It's right next to the book shop. You see it shortly after the Super Market (I.E. 7-11). If you reach the bus stop you've gone too far. And yeah, each CD gives you +8 to a single stat (along with some EXP), and they cost between $14.95 and $15.XX. Also the last CD on the list gives a +2 bonus to all your stats. I think the bookstore gives slightly better stats, but the books cost like $20. I've been too lazy to look into to see which one gives the better deal.

Also: You guys know about the wonder shop in the wall of the tunnel just past the shopping district right? There's a +50 speed and +50 strength for just over a hundred each, and one that's +30 to DEF, WP, and something else I don't remember for about the same price. As well as 50 dollar one ups, and an energy tank equivalent snack.

Yeah I know about that. I actually used that shop to help max out my Scott. And the snack is actually better than the Energy Tank snack available on the final world, since if I recall, the energy tank only restores 100 HP (and maybe 100 GP? I don't remember) while the secret-shop snack restores 200 HP and 200 GP.
However everything in the No-Account Video store, once you pay off the late fees, only costs like $4.50 I believe, and they boost your stats by about 10ish. This also includes the 1-ups you can buy there as well.

NO ACCOUNT VIDEO = $553.75
FLATIRONS BOOKS = $888
SHOCK WAVE RECORD = $747.50
TECHNO SNACK = $648.75
WALLACE = $839.65
And using a combination of shops:
(12) Smashing Turnips --- $16.95 - 8str
(12) Crash And The Boys - $14.95 - 8spd
(2) Kupek ---------------------- $14.95 - 2def 2spd 2wp 2str
(12) Concert T-Shirt --------- $19.95 - 8def 8wp
====================== $652.1

The problem with the video place is that you need to know exactly what's there exactly what you need, and exactly how many, because the late fees come back after you shop, meaning a 500 dollar entry fee every time you want to buy anything. Though with that foreknowledge, yeah.
Also: Is it just me or is Kim basically better than Scott in every way? With better jumping, the impenetrable wall of slaps combo, and all. I haven't played Stiles much or Ramona at all, yet, but so far Stiles seems a little worse than Scott, at least early on, due to both his dash attacks being 'high' attacks, leaving him without a way to attack enemies on their backs until later than Scott and Kim (whom both get a ground slide well be for either of the lower attack combos).

Just finished my first run with Scott. Had to go back and buy that 50+ strength upgrade before taking on Gideon again though, which really helped. Was able to beat his 2nd form in about 4 seconds this time once he broke the ledge and stopped electrocuting me.
Ironically, his last fight is incredible easy, I just beat him with an electro-prod repeatedly and stun blocked him into an eternal loop of unescapable pain instead!
Still have to try out the other characters yet though, but with the knowledge I have now, I think going back to buy that stength buff earlier would save a world of pain.
EDIT; 2 more things just occured to me. 1) Anyone know how you unlock tech attack 2? I expected it to appear once the game was complete, but maybe it only does so if you complete it on a higher difficulty?
2) Looking at the map, the airport to the south may be for future online multiplayer support. Which makes sense.

No, you don't. It just shows the $504 again everytime you go it, it only charges you for it the first time.
Hawk in stage 6 there is a secret path during the part where you have to take that key a long way while fighting beavers and birds. If you look in the back you should see a house. Just keep walking at the top of the screen pressing Up you'll get to Mobile's shop eventually. He sells the manual for Tech 2.

You know, ever since I found out you actively hated Arrested Development, I've sort of been mulling over what kind of comedy a person who hates good comedy would like. It's sort of disappointing that the answer is the mostly obvious 'banally bad comedy'.
For those who have been playing and beating the game, was there a Bass Battle with Todd (#3)? That's one of the things that jumped out at me from the trailer (and my favorite part of the movie) so I was wondering if it translated to the actual game proper.

Yeah, still took me a while even after your first post about it. Basically right after you get the key, head to the very top of the screen, then walk right from there and you'll suddenly dissapear and enter the shop. The entrance is stupidly well hidden.

It is. When I first tried to do the last level I had something like 60+ on both defence and willpower about 30 on strength and 9 speed and found it hard. After going back and buffing stength to 80 though it suddenly became a lot easier. I imagine paying off his debts and buying a bunch of lives might also help a ton (apparantly you can get up to 9 lives).

Just finished the game on Supreme Master with a maxed out Ramona. I ended up buying CDs and Concert T-Shirts to boost my stats instead of worrying about the video store debt, and I ended up being level 16 by level 5, and max stats after my first attempt against Nega-Scott. (Also it seems to me like level 16 Ramona moves faster than level 16 Scott. Anyone else notice little differences like this between characters?)
But yeah, the final level was a little tricky, though only because I ended up losing the Power of Love sword on two different attempts. The first time I accidentally walked off the cloud right after I picked it up, and the second time I was standing on one of the pieces of rock that break away when Gideon does his double-fist slam. I managed to beat Gideon without the sword both times, though it took two lives, and all the GP of my last life was used for revives, and I died shortly after on the techno-base stage. Finally on my third try I managed to keep the sword and killed Gideon within a minute. It was glorious.
Now time to beat the game with the rest of the characters.

Yeah I noticed something along those lines. My Scott with 48 Strength seems to be doing more damage than Kim did with 50. The characters might have innate stats behind the ones shown.

Yeah Ramona is definitely faster than Scott. I plugged in a second controller ('cause I was going for the trophy where you have to get through a world and to the boss without getting hit, and it's ridiculous to attempt that solo) and my maxed out Ramona was moving around a lot faster than my maxed out Scott, though their sprinting speed is the same. Now I need to max out everyone so that I can fiddle around with them and see what their differences are.

Even on the first stage with max attack, it really, really is. I just kinda went "fuck it" and beat the game with Scott instead.

Dude I tried with a maxed out Scott, and a maxed out Ramona (separate occasions) on the first stage on the easiest difficulty and I could never do it. That's when I plugged in the second controller, and held down the circle button with my foot until the area was clear. Soooo much easier.

Stage 3-2. Power of Love code ([]x3, X, O, X, triangle). It's really really easy to take out the girls with the sword and then you just have to get through the walls without Todd getting you. As soon as you crash through the wall after the Bass Battle you get it. If you don't enter 3-1 then exit and try again.
Also, the game needs a harder difficulty than Supreme Master. The bosses were way too easy. Even Gideon. They were even easier than the were on my Rough Rider run.

Everything's easy with your character maxed, yeah. If you think it's too easy I'd suggest just resetting your favorite character's data and playing through the three modes without upgrading at all.

Slow-speed combat poking of the butterfly assault!! Not for the faint-hearted.

That's what I'm saying. They need a 4th difficulty that provides a challenge whether you have 50 strength or 100.

The only differences between difficulties are the stats of the enemies.
I get what you're saying--I'm just saying you could achieve exactly the same thing as a fourth difficulty level by just not statting up your character/statting them up as much.
Thus: as that there ISN'T a fourth difficulty level, and you want something harder, it's pretty easy to take things into your own hands.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. And I'll most likely try that once I unlock and beat the game with the 5th character.

I'm going to take a second here to brag by saying I just scored invulnerable without using either the 'two controllers foot on the O button' nor 'power of love' sword tricks.
It took forever, but I eventually got good enough to get through the first stage without being hit at all with NegaScott. Also Patel, but that doesn't really matter.
Fuck if I'll be doing that on any other stage ever though.

Congrats. I had tried it on the first stage myself. But I went all Rambo with it and wasn't watching what I was doing and got hit by the stupid emo kid that appears after the subspace path.
I'm trying to get through the game on Rough Rider right now with Stephen Stills without boosting my stats at all. Trying to get money for the video rental place so I can pay off the debt and have access to cheap lives.
