Cathy is ending! (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_cathy_calls_it_quits) What ever shall I do! Where will I, as a heterosexual male, find a strong female character who is as concerned about swimsuits as I am in popular newspaper comics?

This is a huge blow to culture everywhere!

I object to the use of that tag, because this a totally serious Cathy catastrophe!

A Cathastrophe, if you will.

But yeah, retagging and moving to a more appropriate subforum. For her pleasure.

If we use Calvin and Hobbes as the gold standard for newspaper comics, Cathy only lasted three times longer. So it's probably 33% as good. I know it sounds ridiculous to even compare Cathy to Calvin and Hobbes, but successful comic strips ending are so rare, it's an achievement worthy of recognition. I have a whole new level of respect for the strip now.

Not enough to like, spend time reading or anything, but still.

What about Beetle Bailey? Or Peanuts?

Or hell, BC was progressively terrible everyday, but do you know where Johnny Hart died? At his drawing table.

That's dedication to a comic about cavemen praying to Jesus, right there.

I can't figure out whether Rex Morgan is terrible or not. It seems to be referencing a storyline and characters that aren't a part of the comic.

I meant to say C&H is the gold standard in respectable newspaper comic strips. Peanuts may top it in quality, but Schulz had nowhere near the artistic integrity of Watterson. Actually I don't know anyone in any field who has anywhere near the integrity of Bill Watterson.

Is Beetle Bailey ended? I hadn't heard about that.

Nope. In fact, it's going on it's 60th year.

Worst comic strip ever.

I mean this was pretty openly horribly sexist. It was about a woman who cared about dresses and food and dieting.

good riddance.

As long as the Family Circus exists, this statement is wholly incorrect.

I thought that distinction belonged to Mallard Fillmore

Political cartoons have their own separate category of awful.

Ranking the relative shittiness of newspaper comics isn't so much an exercise in futility as it is the futility that all those previous exercises in futility are meant to prepare you for; the all-out futile brawl on a distant futile planet where your training in 100x futile-gravity finally allows you to go Super Futile Z. And also develop telepathy.

Basically, you have Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, FoxTrot, and Bloom County, and then everyone else has been dicking around for the past century.

I'll allow that there's a certain joy and purity to watching Dick Tracy throw some asshole off a roof.

Shame FoxTrot is now only on Sundays...

Dilbert was good like four years ago.

And for three of those, the author/artist decided to call it quits before he became shitty...coincidence?

Unfortunately, all the other comics started out shitty so it's hard to gauge whether or not something like C&H ever would have gone to hell.

Wasn't it written/drawn by a woman? An incredibly sexist woman? Also, to make it even more sexist, the two-second news clip of the author drawing it, she looked like she was pretty hot. I don't know why she wrote a strip about some dumpy chick who's married to a bald (?) guy and who whines about dieting 'cause she looked pretty smoking, I think.

Anyway, it's was pretty terrible, but good for a chuckle or whatever. I don't expect much from newspaper comics, since it's usually some recycled joke that the author can fit into four panels, or one of those ongoing adventure ones like Prince Valiant that I can't follow because it's been going on for 25 years and like, Valiant is now like fifty years old and a grizzled badass and has a lame son that is like him back when he was lame, and for some reason they're fighting Pacific islanders that ride water dragons today and if only you had been reading it every Sunday for the past five years you would know why.

Who, this lady? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy_Guisewite)

Oh, I guess she's too old for me, unless she's like rich or something and will date me and leave me all her riches, in which case she is totally a cougar or whatever they call it. Anyway, they showed her writing at her desk from behind for literally two seconds, I'd say you could be the Phantom of the Opera and still look attractive with that kind of angle.
