Question for Brian about a quote in BB's last comic

Well, the one he dies, that is.

The quote in question is "every choice we make is the choice not to do a thousand other things". This little musing caught my eye about a year ago, and that one line had a significant impact on my life. Thinking about it alongside another quote I'd once heard, "It's not the things in life you did that you'll regret, but the things you didn't do", it made me realize how little things can completely change everything.

I think about it every time I randomly meet someone who becomes significant in my life, and, hopefully for the better, it's made me go out and do a lot of things I normally wouldn't have done just for the chance of meeting new people or doing something that'll add a new variable to my life.

Whether or not I'm reading into this random line a little too much, it's definitely made an impact on the way I see everything. I was just wondering if it was a random musing you never gave much thought to, or if it was something you had stuff to say about as well.

And once again, thanks for all those years of slaving over this comic. ;)

You know, when someone tells me that they've taken life advice from 8-Bit Theater, my first instinct is to put a hit on them, for fear that they will mercilessly slaughter everybody I know and love. No hard feelings, but I'm just not taking any chances.

Normally, I'd laugh and agree but I have to admit there were a few things I did pick up from the comic. For example, my public education never made me run across the word usurp which I learned the definition after reading 8-bit.

And honestly after all of this time checking this site every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday who really cares if you pick up a few lame jokes and apply a small bit of comic logic to your life. We're nerds, we'll always look for a deeper meaning even in things like this.

Your argument would hold up logically, except you're forgetting one thing:

We are talking about 8-Bit Theater, a universe in which all its denizens are doomed to suffer for all of their shortcomings, the shortcomings of those whom they happen to be in close proximity, or because Brian had a bad day. If a Crapsack World were at this level (holds hand up to chest), you'd need a ladder to get that high.

And while I concede that the lesson mailboxcow mentions is certainly one of the least bad things you can take from the comic, it's still a depressing idea. It's impossible to jump at every opportunity. Every second that ticks by, every decision you make, an incomprehensible number of possibilities are wasted. If you dwell on them all instead of living in the moment, you will die mentally isolated and miserable.

There are better comics to take life lessons from. Like "How I Killed Your Master". My personal favorite is, "The first step to master the self is to break down the ego."
