View Full Version : Wayne for Mayor [nerd argument]

Why the fuck has this issue not been tackled? Bruce Wayne would be a logical choice for mayor of Gotham. His tragic past and degrees in criminal psychology and other relevent degrees make him a serious contender if he ever were to run on a platform of decreasing crime. His stint as Batman has given him the knowledge of who is and isn't truthworthy in the GCPD and legal system. He has a working knowledge of the crime families and the degrees to prove that if you can offer criminals a chance at rehabilitation (a fair chance mind you) crime, as a whole goes down.
Things Bruce could do as Mayor:
-Issue a special taskforce armed like batman to do investigative work throughout Gotham.
-Tackle the social issues underlying the criminal element by investing in Gotham schools.
-Allow for the proper treatment of criminals in Arkham, who has been either a malevolent for of pure evil making innocent men into psycho killers, or just plain ineffectual at both containment and rehabilitation.
In effect, he could use his influence and wealth to insure that Gotham wouldn't *need* Batman. Why the fuck doesn't he at least try to run?

Because as awesome as Batman is, he is a damaged individual with, in no particular order, serious trust issues, abandonment issues, arguably a split personality, egomania, and probably a slight God complex.
He feels that it is HIS mission to PERSONALLY fight evil since he couldn't save his parents. While dressed as a bat.

You make a good point. With that kind of qualification, he should obviously be running for president.

Because then he'd have to follow pussified liberal laws 'n' shit, instead of getting answers by punching people in the face and dangling them off of rooftops, the way Jesus wants.

If the Penguin can run for mayor, I do not see why Bruce Wayne cannot.
The point of a secret identity is to dissuade people from realizing who he is you know. And it's harder to hide things when the spotlight's on you.

Apparently, I slept through the part of history class where one of our presidents was elected because he dressed like a small furry flying rodent.
Yes you did because ANDREW JACKSON WAS THE BEST PRESIDENT WE'VE EVER HAD.

Fun Fact: Teddy Roosevelt would put on a mask beat up (presumed) criminals found 'not guilty' by the justice system during his tenure as Police Cheif if he thought they were guilty.
All that Bruce does, he does because he works within a broken system. However, given his celebrity status, his economic wealth which has benefited Gotham time and again, as well as his tragic past, it is natural that if he ran on a platform of stopping crime, he would win.
After becoming mayor he need not remain Batman. He can elect a special taskforcr within the GCPD using batman level tech to fight Supercrime. Wayne for Mayor just makes sense.
Side note: How do people not know he is Batman? If I were to deduct who Batman was I would look for a rich dude who was affected by criminals. From there a degree in criminology and criminal psychology would almost clench it. Add in his stay in India to learn martial arts and Wayne's playboy lifestyle looks more and more like a ruse.

Let me get this straight: You think that your client, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands. And your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck
I think some may start to guess.

Gotham is corrupt as shit, to win the election he'd have to bribe everyone which he wouldn't do.
Also he's a total dickhead in a lot of portrayals. I wouldn't vote for him.

Didn't Green Arrow do this and have it fail horribly? And he's in a much better city than Gotham.
Of course he's Green Arrow not Batman.

Wayne can't do the things Batman does.
Wayne doesn't know the things Batman does.
Wayne is a super-wealthy playboy, quite the poor choice in politics [regardless of personal beliefs and creeds].
Wayne as mayor would severely cut into or kill his time to become and be Batman.
Also, who wants the next iteration of a Batman comic to be several pages of signing papers and stamping documents?

Except he is, pardon the pun, batshit insane when it all comes down to it. He doesn't dress up as a bat to be a paragon of sound mental health. Batman needs to be Batman, kinda like the Joker needs Batman to be his foil. Bruce Wayne is the mask.

Batman generally portrays his Bruce Wayne persona as a dick, playboy, drunk who is very irresponsible. Also, on paper Bruce Wayne has absolutely zero skills. He doesn't have a degree in Criminal Psychology, no one knows he is a master detective, ninja master, or escape artist.

Ex Machina would like to have a word with your preconceived notions. And that's in 95% of the time not overrun by supervillains New York City.

Wayne as mayor would severely cut into or kill his time to become and be Batman.
That would be a bad thing as it would mean less punching criminals!
Also, Wayne for Mayor would expose himself as Batman if he setup a super task force in GCPD using Batman level tech. It would also be harder for him to sneak around to do Batman stuff when he's the mayor, plus be the target for evil villains. Who's going to rescue Batman when Bruce Wayne is in the building that just got Gased by Joker?

Ugh beat me to this joke!
Public perception of Bruce Wayne would prevent him from becoming mayor, It'd be like Kim Kardashian running, or, at best, Arnold Schwartzenegger... maybe he SHOULD run for mayor.

Bruce Wayne? That pompous, self-involved, party-obsessed rich boy? The guy can barely run his company, much less the whole city! And just what sort of plan could he possibly have to deal with these mad masked vigilantes that seem to create more psychotic murderers than they put away? Wayne's so out of touch, he probably hasn't even heard of the Batman, much less has any idea how to reign him in!
I sure as hell wouldn't vote for him.

PR stunts likely orchestrated by Lucius Fox on Wayne's behalf.
That's the real brain behind the Wayne empire, right there.

New TV SHOW IDEA!
An HBO adaptation of Gotham Central by Brubaker where Evilness' idea is a plot point.
I want to see a Fox v Cobblepot campaign.

Any adaptation of the amazing Gotham Central would be fine, this plot point or no.
Cobblepot as mayor is like just an adaptation of Batman Returns, btw, I don't think he ever ran for mayor in the comics...I don't think. I think Rupert Thorne did, though, right?

To the original question of 'why not' I say this: Becuase 'Bruce Wayne For Mayor' would be effectivley the same thing as 'Bruce Wayne: Murderer', 'No Man's land' , 'War Games', and a number of other mini-mega events that have cropped up in recent history. It would end with Bruce Wayne not being a mayor/ crimelord/ murderer/ clown/ etc. and either a dead sidekick or a new sidekick.
I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to read though.

Dent was cured during 'Hush' and then reverted becuase DC is all about the status quo.
