It's time for another edition of Mauve Is An Idiot, Help Her Fix Her Stupid Problems.

Oh goodie. The new L4D DLC is coming out next month and my copy of the game has ceased to function.

For some reason I let my sister download the Night Terror add-on campaign onto my computer. She installed it, played it several times, said it was awesome, then logged off.

Today I decided I might like to play it. I log into Steam, double-click on Left4Dead.... and get an error message that says "Failed to load the launcher DLL: The specified module could not be found." All my other games run just fine.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF WHAT IS THIS AND HOW DO I MAKE IT STOP?

MY RAGE IS LIMITLESS AND UNDYING!!!!

I figure it'd probably be useless to contact Steam's support crew, since add-on campaigns aren't Valve's property and therefore aren't Valve's problem.

EDIT: Oh shit this should be in the computers/support section. Dammit. Sorry. My rage is making me delusional.
SO MUCH RAGE.

Hm. Try right-clicking L4D, going to Properties, and Verifying your files.

Also is this L4D in your Library or an icon on your desktop? Asking just in case the shortcut screwed up on the desktop or something, which is vaguely possible.

These forum topics seem to deal with the same issues:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/left4dead/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-48097576&pid=937406

Google (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=steam+%22Failed+to+load+the+launcher+DLL:+The+sp ecified+module+could+not+be+found.%22) has much more of the same.

Did she buy this add-on via Steam? Or did it come from 'elsewhere'? If you have an unregistered upgrade, it could bork your game. Or if she has her own log-in, that could also be a problem. Her log-in has the Night-Terror add-on, but yours isn't registered for that.

Worst case scenario? You might have to reinstall everything...

(Of course, I don't play any of the Steam multiplayer stuff, so I can only guess what could be wrong.)

I wasn't home when she downloaded it, but she says she got it from the website that Valve's been referring people to for it's L4D2 Community Map of the Week thing it's been doing on its blog. At least that's what she told me.

Also...... define "everything," Bob. Are we talking "everything" as in reinstall l4D from scratch, or "everything" meaning reinstalling Steam and all my games?

'Verify Integrity of Game Cache' should tell you if any files are screwed up. Try that before you reinstall.
