not sure why, pop in a CD and it just displays the inside files. Normally this wouldn't bug me, but some of my games I cant get to run/install.

You could try downloading Microsoft's PowerToys' TweakUI app and look in the Autoplay section, where you can select which drives to enable it on, disable it on, and so forth. I know this has worked for people with autoplay issues. You can even decide to turn off autoplay.
Otherwise, you may need to check your registry for your autoplay/autorun settings in the following places:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CDRom [general autorun]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
*edit: Not sure why these paths are showing up with spaces in them; I've typed none.
Lastly, [i]if by chance it's not all of your CDs/DVDs that fail to autorun/autoplay, it could just be some issue with that particular one. My copy of Star Wars: Rebellion wouldn't autorun and then install no matter what I did with it for some reason. for example.

I'm surprised you never noticed. The forum does it to break up long strings of characters to help avoid stretching the page. It's just set to a lower number than necessary.
On the autorun thing, what probably happened was someone popped in a CD and clicked "Open Folder to View Files" with the "Always Perform This Action" box checked. Just go into Control Panel and find Autoplay. I run Vista, but it should also be there in XP. You can adjust your settings much more easily there than poking around in the registry.

Oh. My window is too wide for that to be an issue, so it looked odd to me.
Also, what you suggest is certainly a good call if it's just music or a movie or data. But if it's something like a game disk meant to launch an installer or the like, then autoplay isn't the issue and he may still need to tweak his autorun settings. Regardless, I should have suggested to check those settings first.

just did, and it was set to prompt me for all forms (there was no option for games or installation discs). I was gonna try Synk's original suggestion, but I have no idea what HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is, I tried entering it directly in, but that didn't work

That would be your registry, accessible by typing REGEDIT at a command prompt. But if you don't already know what you're doing, editing the registry will probably be daunting. You can really screw stuff up if you make a mistake.
I'm going to let someone else walk you through messing with that.
Edit: Before you do, did you happen to see a "mixed content" section? That might cover it. Vista has one for "software and games," but if XP doesn't, it's likely under something vaguely related or a catch-all.

Maybe posting a screen or two might help. I don't have XP, so I don't know what's in there.

That's... really weird. There's no option to just run the thing when it comes up? You're sure there's no game section in the Control Panel area? :sweatdrop

A bit of a pain, but can you just run the autorun yourself?
Also, something like this happened to a friend of mine, but for her it was that the computer refused to give ANY options when autoplay popped up, for an external harddrive. It autoplay would pop up, and there would just be a blank box where the options would normally be.
She ended up having to revert back to a backup from a few weeks previously, since her entire computer was infected with a ton of crap.
You could always do that. Windows sets system restore points which MIGHT do the trick.

I always turn off system restore, it eats up alot of memory and virus sometimes camp out in it.
well some dont seem to have it, like when I tried installing my printer. Only reason I was able to install that was because I was able to have windows search the CD for the drivers. I mean I know they have it, but no idea where it is. I dont suppose there is a universal "run this crap" icon I should be looking for?

Could you list some examples of both disks that are behaving as you expect and ones that are not? And, if it's not too difficult, what your expectations are when putting them in vs. what they are actually doing as well. Just a few examples in each side should be fine.
I know that's probably an annoyance, but it will help [me, at least] make sure I know what type of autorun we're dealing with.
