You know how you're always saying to yourselves, "Gosh I love telling people my opinions, yet when I offer them to people unsolicited, I get strange looks / told to fuck off / pepper spray in my eyes"?
Well today is your opinions' lucky day, becaus I am soliciting them.
Now that we have established that Dragon Age is balls, recommend me a game that isn't balls.
Conditions:
1. I have to be able to buy it on Steam.
That is pretty much all the conditions.

Monkey Island, if you don't already have it. My only complaint is that you don't get the VA with the classic graphics. I dislike the new cartoony style. It just sacrifices something after the series started with the most realistic graphics they had at the time.

If through some horrible, horrible fluke you've never played Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episodes 1&2, you should resolve that right now.
The Left4Dead franchise is a lot of fun, if you've never played it.
GMod is a blast if you like building vehicles and death machines for no reason other than for the lulz. It's basically a sandbox in which you have access to all of the props, ragdolls, and AI-controlled NPCs from Half-Life, Portal and TF2. (You have to own the aforementioned games in order to access the models, though.)

Team Fortress 2. Maybe wait until it goes on sale again, but even at $20 it's a good deal for the amount of time you can squeeze from it. Still updating, too.

The problem I have with buying multiplayer FPS games like TF2 or even L4D (though less so) this long after their release is that the metagame has already progressed really heavily, and catching up to the curve is a bitch and a half.
Though yeah, TF2 is totally awesome if you can deal with being a total 'nubzorz' for the first week or so of playing.

My friend actually has an interesting policy. He buys games on a 1:1 basis. If he feels he'll get a full hour of enjoyment for every dollar of the cost, he buys it. Otherwise, he either waits for the price to drop or for it to hit rental shelves or passes entirely.
Given that, I'd say TF2 for $20 is probably a good deal (note that I've never played).

Check out the Indy section, you can get some pretty entertaining games for dirt cheep. Also I've been enjoying Worms: Reloaded, but it seems like they're still rounding off the rough edges with updates there.
You also might enjoy Overlord if you haven't played that yet.

What's half life? I've heard of it, but never played it myself
Depending on the opinion you hear, it's either the greatest FPS ever made, or the greatest game ever made. If you haven't played at least Half-Life 2 I'd recommend that, though of course if you play the old Half-Life game first I guess it'll make a little more sense to you (but really the story is pretty easy to catch up with even starting at just Half-Life 2). Then there are two "expansion packs" (but not really) for Half-Life 2 called Episode 1 and Episode 2 that basically just go ahead and continue the story directly after Half-Life 2 ends so they're really just short episode sequels that together are basically forming the sequel. The creators would have called them Half-Life 3 if they had thought of it but they can't go back in time now.
If you're confused enough at this point, perhaps you are dazed enough to just go ahead and buy Half-Life 2. And go ahead and buy Portal while you're at it, why not?
Anyway, Fifth, why don't you play Undying? It's a cool game.

This is kind of mitigated by there being: Newbie servers, an offline training mode, the ability to make your own server full of bots. So I'd say that while there is a learning curve TF2 is aware of it and trying to lessen it at the start.
Just start as soldier to get the hang of things, maybe run around as Medic to learn the maps and you'll have it in no time.

I paid $2.50 for the game during a sale. I've played for 324.2 hrs. That works out to little more than 18 cents per DAY of play.

That's a terrible policy that doesn't take into account quality of the game at all past a baseline of 'entertaining'. By his calculation I should be willing to buy windows solitaire for 100+ dollars, but shouldn't be willing to buy portal for 30.

Only the most awesome space-zombie vs Action Scientists first-person shooter ever.
Warning: the following is a Mauve Nerd Rant:
It combines Valve's excellent storytelling with fun gameplay and sidekicks/npcs you actually care about. It's a very immersive experience: There are no actual cutscenes, npcs chat to you in real time, letting you decide if you want to pay attention or not. Despite the fact that your character is of the mute hero variety, you still feel like you have a degree of control over what's going on. Puzzles have multiple solutions with a surprising degree of real-world physics: To climb up to a ledge just out of reach, for example, you can stack some boxes, create a see-saw-type device out of a fallen beam, weigh down that beam on one end to create a ramp, etc. The variety in the gameplay, from exploring areas to driving a wide range of vehicles to controlling a swarm of alien bugs, keeps the gameplay from getting repetative. The levels are complex, the graphics surprisingly detailed, and the voice acting is above-par (except for Barney, but that's okay.). Oh, and hitting headcrab zombies with a crowbar is awesome.
HL2 and Episodes 1 and 2 are better than the original, although the cliffhanger ending will drive you crazy. And yeah, you don't really need to play the original to get what's going on; I didn't play it until after I'd completed all the later episodes.

Borderlands.
If you actually man up and reach beyond Steam, there's so many different PC games for you to try (albeit that some are probably hard to find nowadays).
Outwars.
Frogger.
Star Wars Racer was always fun.
Battle for Wesnoth.
Sburb.
Space Invaders.
Runescape if you don't want to ever have a life again (assuming you have one at the moment, which is a bit much.)
Midtown Madness.

It would help if you posted a list of what games you own so we can see taste preferences and what you have. That you didn't like Dragon Age doesn't make you exactly a unique flower there Fifth.
Regardless, for 5 bucks each you can grab Freedom Force, Freedom Force Versus the Third Reich, and Overlord. All very amusing games.

Well, that includes replay value and such. Portal makes it to the list (and made it into his library) because it's amazing enough to play again enough to justify the cost by his logic.
Solitaire on the other hand isn't something he'd buy for any amount of note because it's not providing "enjoyment" so much as "slightly less boredom."
It's not a perfect system, but he's on a tight budget and it's seemed to work out for him quite well.

I stick by my 'Punch him in the nose' policy.
Also, I don't think Portal had much/any replay value, to be honest. It was a puzzle game, and once you solved the puzzles it was pretty pointless doing it again. Unless you really wanted to hear GLaDOS's soothing robo-voice.

Maybe not immediately, but he has, in fact, replayed it several times now. It's probably already earned its keep, or if not, gotten very close.
I was all set up to nominate a few games, but then I saw you said that they should be available via Steam. I thought "crap." Then I thought about Team Fortress 2, because it's totally awesome. But I know you've played TF2, because you've talked about Spy hate previously. So I tried to think of a way to make a joke about TF2 and your Spy hate. Then I remembered "Hey, I made a picture about that once." Then I thought, "Fuck it, I'm drunk, I'll just post the pic:"

Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse is also nifty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTm53o-qj1w), but you'd get a better deal direct from Telltale directly (http://www.telltalegames.com/store/samandmax-thedevilsplayhouse). $19.95, plus you can also get a DVD for an extra $5.00 (s/h). Up on Steam, the game(s) costs something like $40.

Everyone else seems to be throwing out shooters and casual stuff. So I'll mention that Steam has the new King's Bounty series which is kinda like the old Heroes of Might and Magic but more RPGish. If you played the original 386 King's Bounty it's kinda like that, but with 20 years of advancement on it. Also made by Russians. They're currently doing a special where if you pre-order King's Bounty Crossworlds (which is like a deluxe version of King's Bounty: Armoured Princess, the second game in the series) you get King's Bounty The Legend(the first one) free, all for $25USD. (This massively annoys me as I just blew $30 on Legend and armoured Princess separately. STEAM!)
Also there's Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines on there as well, which, as long as you patch it (which is absolutely necessary, Troika made Bethesda and Obsidian look like masters of debugging and quality assurance), is an RPG which is absolutely not balls.
Also if for some reason you want a JRPG on PC there's Recettear, which is fun. You play as a little girl who's been drafted into running an item shop by her dad's(a missing adventurer last seen facing off with a dragon) loan shark fairy. When you go into dungeons you control mercenaries she hires to loot the place, so far I've got a poverty stricken swordsman hobo and a drunken bandit lady. It's bizarre, funny, free of creepy "Japan"ess so far and addictive as sin.
Oh and there's like all the Fallout games on there as well.

Gonna second Recettear, read the Rock Paper Shotgun Wot I Think (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/09/11/wot-i-think-recettear-an-item-shops-tale/#more-38584) if you want to get a real idea of what the game is about.
Also gonna throw out Solium Infernum, a probably overpriced indie board game that only supports Play By Email and Hotseat for multiplayer, but is the only game that allows you to bet on a player to win and then take their victory from them. Or if you want, become their bitch, help them win and take sweet victory for yourself. Read RPS's account of a multiplayer match (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/01/25/the-complete-gameboys-from-hell/) and go from there.

Hey, awesome! I hope you enjoy HL2. Although if you do like it, I hope I get points for when you inevitably buy the two sequels/expansions Episode 1 and 2 (they're full-length games with improved controls and fantastic gameplay, so calling them expansions doesn't do them justice). They pick up the storyline seconds after the previous installment ended. You'll want them. Trust me.

Also I have to disagree with Mauve whilst episodes 1 & 2 are worth the purchase they really aren't full games. They have less than 4 hours of game time unless you get lost.

Found it, the guy's who did Tropico 3(also on Steam and totally worth a look, most fun Banana Republic simulation ever) are doing a new game called Dungeons (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/12/dungeons-no-keeper/) which is basically a big old tribute to Dungeon Keeper. Just checked, they do. $10. He really should have take care of that first, so much more atmospheric.
Edit:
I kill poison headcrabs with MY BARE HANDS.
Ok, no. I use the crowbar, though. As long as there's no other enemies in range, they really aren't very dangerous. And unless you somehow blunder into an ambush of crabs and zombies, you should be able to kill the other stuff, and then take on the poison ones.
But that's just an aside.

Nah. Freeman's mind is funny if you've played it before, but actually completing the game, facing the challenges yourself is so much more rewarding than watching someone else do it for you.
Besides, Freeman is many things, but a complete and total idiot is not among them. The whole "You are hearing Gordon's thoughts, isn't this HILARIOUS" really detracts from the whole tense, desperately surviving a disaster and feeling your morals degrade in the process of surviving atmosphere.
mauve
09-12-2010, 11:12 AM
I never finished the original. I like the storyline and characters in the sequel much better.
Poison headcrabs are only bad if you get swarmed by fast zombies at the same time. Your suit auto-heals you if you get poisoned anyway, if you still have suit power, regardless of what your hp was before getting poisoned. It's kinda nice. The poison-healing thing actually kept me alive through Ravenholm during my first playthrough.
And Freeman's Mind is awesome. That is all.
Viridis
09-12-2010, 11:24 AM
I don't find poison headcrabs tough. I'm only saying Valve finds them hilarious. In their commentary they mention that, in playtesting, players have a tendency to panic when they encounter them, unloading all of their ammo as fast as possible regardless of other dangers.
They then go on to say this is interesting because it's the one enemy that can't technically kill you. You can tell they find this great.
The original game does have a nice claustrophobic feeling because you pretty much have no allies and you're stuck underground for most of it, but I think that's the only thing it has over Half-Life 2.

Ooh, just thought of something.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It's... pretty much Half Life meets DnD. Fantasy setting, medieval weapons, magic, character customization, all that jazz, but you have a very linear storyline (very unlike DnD, I know, but shut up), atmospheric environments and a first-person perspective. Also uses the source engine. Not a long game, and mildly buggy, but fun, and has quite a bit of replay value (though the multiplayer that comes with it is, I think, pretty shit). If you find it for $15, I'd say it's worth it.
I'm pretty sure it's available on Steam, but I'm in China at the moment, so I can't access everything. Check it out.

Yeah, I had a lot of fun with Dark Messiah up until that shaft with all the spiders. I was playing on Hard without having played the game before, and it was ludicrously difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, it wasn't bad. At least, it wasn't until those damn spiders! I ran out of antidotes too, which was the worst part. Never did make it past there, but aside from that, it was a ton of fun.

I like how Fifth doesn't know that the Ceiling Tongue thingies can be killed by simply swiping them with the crowbar when you're grabbed by them and pulled up close, which is also the way to conserve ammo, everybody in this thread!
Not that you have to really conserve ammo on the regular difficulty setting, but still (actually if you ever get around to playing Half Life 1 the fact that they can be killed quite easily with the crowbar is every important, since ammo is much scarcer in that one).
I don't know about Poison Headcrabs terrifying me alone but the entire Ravenloft scenario was scary as hell, seriously. My friend calls me a wuss for it but that stuff seriously creeped me out.

Give it another try. The spider bit isn't that hard, and if you stop there, you're missing out on so much stuff. Dunno your specialization, but I usually defeat that bit by just circle-strafing and spamming the standard attack. As long as you're moving, the spiders won't hit you when they do that jump attack, and you can kick them to keep them away from you. It'll take a while, but they can't block your normal attack, so you can wear them down and then start taking them out with strong attacks. Mind you, you should probably have a long sword at least if you try this, cause otherwise it's really going to take ages.

I thought I'd post that in case someone in here doesn't have it, Knights of the Old Republic is going for $2.50 on Steam today.

Yeah, I was an assassin, and from memory, I had daggers, I think? Don't have that save anymore though.
Damn.

Fifth playing HL2 actually got me in the mood to replay it!
Ravenholm is making me not want to play it. :(
I'm such a pussy.
Also, WTF, KOTOR being 2.50 should be like a topic on the forum so I know it, dammit! It's back up to 9.99 now! I want to play it~

Amercian McGee's Alice? I just downloaded it myself but it seems interesting. Get in the mood for the "impending" sequel.

New DLC is out next week I believe, so it'll likely get a discount then.

That sounds great, and it seems I have just enough money to get TF2 right now
EDIT: I had some trouble buying it, but it seems it's fine now ^_^

Slight bump to confirm, for those who may not have seen it or bothered to look: both games are available for ~10 dollars total on Steam right now, a little under 7 dollars individually.

gog.com had some games on sale last I checked. I got Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura for 2.99 which is a lot like Fallout but in a steampunk fantasy setting (it even had some of the same people work on it). They also have Planescape: Torment now which I've heard is THE BEST RPG EVER MADE or something along those lines. Not sure if you've played it.
Normal prices are pretty low, anyway (5.99 to 9.99).
