View Full Version : I'm Going To Watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show Tonight
So I've got a bunch of friends who loved this flick, and as I've always been kind of curious about their apparently collective mental state, I put it off. I never understood how Tim Curry in drag made for great cinema, or for that matter, any male actor in drag.

And apparently it's a musical? I don't know. I knew it was big in New York - there was a theatre that did a midnight showing of it every Friday at midnight when I was in Manhattan, so, there's that.

It's...well, it's an experience. There's a cult following who will respond to the musical in a variety of ways and will attend it dressed as characters or just plain messed up. The one time I've seen it, there was a dude and none of us were sure if he was wearing anything more than a trench coat.
Are you watching the film version or actually going to go see it on stage? Stage version is decent but I have no urge to see it more than once and the film version, though I haven't seen it all, seems like much of the same expect without the audience input and better settings.

I've watched most of this movie, it was kind of...something something (humorous, I guess?), but I'm not sure why it is so wildly popular other than that it used to be the greatest example of pop counterculture but has probably been one-upped on that count a million times since...

Are they doing audience participation?! Every time you hear the name Janet you HAVE to shout slut at the top of your lungs. There is so much for you to learn for this movie.

But it hasn't aired yet so I can't show the full clip. Plus, Oswald in drag.
I have friends who are super into this but I will never understand.

Yeah, I remember that episode of Drew Carey. It is true that Rocky Horror Picture Show is probably a million times better than Queen of the Desert which I've never heard of.

I really don't know what to make of the fact that you've now mentioned Glee twice here ever, let alone in a single thread.
It's one of the few things that has been on my DVR for about two years now. It's always been a good watch, the music is catchy, and when you see it with people at the nerd conventions in the video room at midnight there is always entertainment to be had. As movie rolls go, Rocky Horror is one of the three things I remember Tim Curry for the most.
Dr. Frankenfurter
The Devil
The Butler from Clue
In about that order...

Dude, GLEE IS AWESOME(I've been told this multiple times by my wife so this must be true).
But it is culturally significant right now, so them doing Rocky Horror Picture Show means it must still be awesome even today! SO YEAH! AWESOME!
I don't... I just... wat
What did I just watch!?!

The Awesomest Musical EVER!
Tim Curry at his hottest (So hot that apparently some of my friends forget that time exists and are all 'Tim Curry is so hoooooooot' and I'm like 'Ew' and they're like 'Well not NOW' and I'm like 'That's not how declarative statements wofffffffffffffffffffffffff')
I think some of the music is okay.
The planet Transsexual in Transylvania and I just....
Why was Ernst Stavros Bloefeld the narrator?
I CAN NEVER LOOK AT JAMES BOND THE SAME WAY AGAIN!

Your reaction is understandable.
For some reason, a friend of mine makes us watch it every Halloween. Recently, we were going to watch it with the audience narration, but this exchange went down:
Jake: I can't hear what the actors are saying.
Me: Yeah, this is the first time he's seen it. Maybe he should see it with the dialogue first.
~After the movie~
Jake: ...Never again.
He wasn't getting off that easy. Also, the narration is kind of annoying. Some of the remarks are funny, but there's a remark to goddamn everything, & it gets old.
*Brad appears on screen.*
"Asshole!"
*Janet appears onscreen.*
"Slut!"
----
"Besides, the owner of this castle could be a beautiful woman."
"He is!"
----
"It fires a laser made of pure antimatter."
"Then it's not a laser!"
I think that the best description for the movie is probably "one giant sex joke without a punchline."
See, this is the way my mind works - this man:

Plays this character:

In this movie:

Which stars this man:

Who now looks like this:
http://www.reelmovienews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/sean-connery-good.jpg
And because everything is still present in my mind, I'll imagine him in this:
http://images.eonline.com/eol_images/Articles/20080724/425.rocky.horror.pictureshow.072408.jpg
And the result will look something like this:

And then everything will be ruined forever.
I'll start thinking of all my other favourite older actors, like Anthony Hopkins and Christopher Walken.

Seil, we know that movie turned you on so you don't have to go out of your way to say so.
Only for Rocky. I don't know what everyone sees in this Tim Curry cat.

Rocky having abs of laser deflection may have been the best part of that movie.
I forget where I heard it, but someone mentioned the fact that that bit of dialogue, "This is a laser made of pure antimatter" or whatever didn't make sense, 'cause if it was anti matter, then it wouldn't be a laser.
I think that was exactly the reason it was a laser made out of pure antimatter.

If not, it's definitely the reason for the audience retort.
But NonCon is probably right. Something in the Rocky Horror Picture Show didn't make sense? Say it ain't so!
A large part of what the movie is is parodying the low-budget horror movies of the time, in case the intro song didn't clue you in, or the King Kong reference near the end, or Frankfurter being a mad scientist, etc. When something is bizarre, or doesn't make sense, or that sort of thing, it's mocking the movies of the time in its own way.

You haven't seen many old-school slasher films, have you?

I can't say as though I'm prepared to answer that question.

Man, the slasher rules are usually that the couple will be killed in 1 of 3 ways.
Right before sex. Either they are killed together, or the girl will go change, the guy gets killed then the girl gets killed when she comes back and then killed as she screams.
During sex. They'll be offed together.
Right after sex. Guy hears a noise, goes investigates gets killed then the girl gets killed right after that.

But the Rocky Horror Picture Show added another option to that list:
Couple gets separated and each have sex with Tim Curry.
krogothwolf

I fail to see the problem with that.
Wigmund
09-19-2010, 08:13 PM
There isn't, it's just a new option.
Should be a hazard in life, getting sexed up by Tim Curry.
Go into the kitchen, get something out the fridge, Tim Curry sex and then you return to the living room to watch the game with your buds.

I'm noticing that "everyone dress in drag & does a song & dance number" is conspicuously absent from this list.

That's because all the other slasher flicks haven't caught on to how awesome that is.

It is certainly less of a cliche.
