Capitalism, ho! (http://www.carpefulgur.com/recettear/)

This game, named Recettear, is a delightful little indie gem. You play as Recettear, a young girl who has inherited her late fathers debt. In order to pay it off, you run an item store for adventurers.

I'd recommend taking a look at it; it's got a comprehensive demo, and the localizer rubs me the right way in how they approach things.

Heard good things. May try the demo when I have time. It's one of those things where I'm never sure if I'm going to have the patience for it.

I was gonna post about this but I was too busy over the weekend catching up on work.

I was busy because I put work off in order to play.... Recettear. This game is unbelievably addictive. It's awesome, but it's basically Diablo meets Animal Crossing with healthy dollops of Zelda esque combat and the Atelier series. It's pretty evil honestly, also the games method of breaking stuff up into time periods results in Civilisation-esque "one more turn" syndrome. "Must sell these Chobham Armours at a mark up while little girls are on an armour buying spree, oh I'll just play another day so I won't forget that order of treasure due tomorrow, wow I managed to finally sell that awesome knife to Charme, should go on a dungeon dive to test it out..."

So yeah it's fantastic but be warned it's going eat time like someone crossed Civilisation and Diablo.

Also LATE GAME SPOILERS Recette calling Griff out on being a RPG stereotype was so goddamn hilarious I actually hurt myself laughing "You seriously want to usher in a new age of darkness and become a dark lord, in this day and age? I feel embarassed just listening to you....". On a more serious note the music near the end of that level was awesome, it sounded vaguely like a homage to The Pinnacle music from the Castelvania games.. That's another thing this game has got an excellent localisation, lots of personality, lots of humour and all the details come through. Read the item descriptions, some of them are gold.

so its a game where you are one of those money grubbing pricks that have the balls to charge you for items when you are TRYING TO SAVE THE WORLD?

Thats awesome, love the concept, gonna play it next time I have some down time

Someone needs to make a mod of this where you are Marcus from Borderlands.

Does the main character always look like a slack-jawed soulless doll under some kind of weird mind control?

Can I take out loans from the bank, use those loans to buy other stores, transfer the loans to those stores and then take money out of those stores as various administrative fees and thus make shit loads of money with no liabilities?

No but you can wait for the harvest to fail and charge 350% on food and some other evil things.

Edit: also no Ness, she doesn't always look like that. She often does but Recette's often a little :) if you catch my meaning.

they actually mention that in the game. I like their little fourth wall breaking

"Demo will be ending soon so you should save"
"..whats a demo?"
"Focus we got alot of things to go over"

or how like 50% of the end demo scene is a huge "dont pirate this" message. I love little things like that

For those of you playing, avoid books and candy. Only person that buys it is this little girl and she is a real cheapskate. I can normally get 32% profit but with her I rarely get over 15%

Books aren't bad to put in vending machines I've found. They generally have high prices and wide availability.

Also the little girl is annoying at the start but she's fine once you get her customer rank up. Oh yeah that's important try to make your customer's happy, avoid haggling, keep that Just Bonus going. Haggle only on the big stuff to maximise profit. Sell low (like 106-112%) to make the customer's happy, it helps in the long run as the short term loss of profit is countered by the speed with which you unlock new abilities.

Also Euria sucks.

I dont know if I can, I just barely made first weeks payment, down to about 800 in cash and 1000 in items. But how do you check out customer rank? Or is it one of those invisible stats?

Invisible as far as I can tell, but you get a heart at the end of their sentences when you raise it to show you if you have raised it, it seems to determine how much cash they're willing to spend (though not how good they are at haggling so they'll still favour certain percentages but they'll go for more expensive stuff).

Also big tip for getting past the first two payments if you want it harvest lizards on a stick from those rock throwing goblin things, they can be used in item fusion (which is unlocked by increasing your merchant level should be visible on the merchant level scale if you haven't got it already) with a cheap necklace for a huge (~14 000 pix) profit. The rank 1 sword recipe is relatively easy to do and profitable as well.

And finally if you're really stuck in this game and getting frustrated, don't sweat a gameover it transitions into a new game plus, where you keep everything but your money and what stuff you've unlocked. Your levels and inventory, your adventurers' levels and inventory (though you'll have to unlock them all again) and the customer ranks all stay the same.Plus the gameover screen's pretty funny so you should try and see it at least once.

Welp, I'll try the demo out, but there's no way in hell I can afford the full game right now.

Based on what I've seen, though, this is a nice surprise.

Holy shit they link to Homestuck's music. Bonus points.

BTW the developers of this have made a bunch of other games which I think were in the same setting too, the latest of which is Territoire, which looks to be sort of like Civilisation. You can find that here (http://blackguard.darkstargamers.com/Territoire/Main_Page). Hopefully CF will localise this is Recettear does well.

hey does anyone know how to beat the second boss on the first (actual) dungeon? I assume its like the first one and there is a trick to dealing decent damage? Oh and any easy ways to get that loot for the order, because this wizard kid is starting to bug me

I've kinda beaten it(well the main storyline, not the post game stuff) already so I can help with stuff.

Second boss Kill the red mushrooms. If they're all dead he'll eat the purple ones and faint, giving you about 5 seconds to get free hits in. I fucked up the first time and went after the purple shrooms....

The mage kid's order The liver is dropped by the giant slime boss sometimes, the charred lizards are dropped both by the goblins and by the second boss, the wings are dropped by an enemy found in the dungeon floors after the second boss, the drop rate's high so you should get them easily, I had like 6 the first time I beat the dungeon. Once you beat the dungeon you unlcok a boss rush of the dungeon allowing you to just fight the bosses rather than going through the dungeon floors, this will make it easy to farm the bosses for their drops.

well drop rate is ALOT lower for me for some reason (I only got one) but it worked. Though is there a way to repeat boss rush or the floors without eating up more time. Abit disappointed with the first boss of the second (real) dungeon. No trick, just hit him, real let down.

Oh and yea I met Euria, whats even the point of her?

No real trick, just save beforehand and load when you don't get the drops.

So, this game is basically an indie version of the Atelier Series(well, not the recent ones, the older ones where crafting and merchanting was the focus not some inane story with alchemy being a system to the side)?

greed

Kinda, though with more focus on running the shop, fusion's more a side thing for completionism/creating outright broken stuff. Also combat's top down action RPG style and controls sort of like the old Zeldas rather than a traditional RPG.

The writing and focus on characters are very like Atelier's though.

Euria is mostly an obstacle she's the penalty for having a store with high value(look at the store atmosphere, the gaudier it is the more likely she is to appear). The benefit to it being gaudy is the rich customers like the guildmaster and Charme show up more often.

She has one benefit, some of the stuff she sells is exclusive to her or a really rare drop (fishbowls in particular area a useful fusion ingredient that rarely shows up in dungeons and she sells regularly). Also you don't need to buy it at 500% for her to go with (anything above about 200% is likely to be accepted at the first offer if you don't want to lose a chain, 180-200% sometimes works too).

And yeah a few bosses aren't that creative, but most either have a neat gimmick or are tricky.
