This popped up while I was browsing the General Discussion forum. Just thought I should point it out.

Yeah, Magic Marker hotlinked an image from that site. Made it an attachment just to be on the safe side.

So the random site crashes are caused by rage posts so strong that they collapse under their own mass and temporarily prevent the site from transmitting?

Yes, obviously, but that doesn't have anything to do with anything.

This happens to me sometimes when my computer's clock has been fudged with.

PLEASE, please, folks:

Do not hotlink from other sites. If you are posting a funny image, for example, download and re-host [unless you are super scared of some kind of legal action or it's a strange case]. Avoiding hotlinks prevents the following:
- "no leeching" images
- leeching itself
- the ability for the host to change the content to something we don't want to see, etc. and maybe get you in trouble
- malware when their site is compromised!

There are various free image hosting sites around, and many ISPs provide their users with web space.

Do you realize how much of the new and old funny pic threads are hotlinked? We got like a bazillion in the first one alone.

NPF is now a ticking time bomb.

I know. That doesn't make it right.

It would be worth considering making this a (low level) rule, and possibly using the wordfilter to break URLs if there is any particular site which is frequently hotlinked and/or malware-prone.

I've thought about that, sans the wordfilter, a few times myself. I'd hate to have to go through all those current picture posts, but it wouldn't be right to retroactively address them anyway. We eventually implemented such a rule at clanBOB, though it's not like every time it happens we do anything about it -- it's more like, "Hey, keep this in mind. If you really ignore it, we'll step in."

Consider me behind the idea officially. We'll see what happens.

Yeah I mean I'm not saying apply it retroactively, that would be insane, like making a "I the person making this rule am required to spend roughly a hundred hours jamming pushpins into my pinkie fingers" rule, just insane.

My bad -- I didn't mean to imply you were saying that, but rather that's something I've thought of doing myself at times when browsing the Interbuttz pictures thread, for example. I typically follow that thought up with "that's a dumb idea; I have better things to do", though.

But yeah. No "omg ur leechng temp-banned", but it would be fair, in my opinion, to officially frown upon it.

Isn't it possible to disable hotlinking from off site entirely? Or, do you want to allow people to link to their own domains?

The idea is it'd still be cool to link images from photobucket/imageshack/tinypic/such sites as specifically exist for the purpose of linking images.

Maybe there's a way to set up a whitelist for images specifically, so we could allow image hotlinking only for the hosts on it. Gonna look into that but if there isn't, a rule sounds like a good idea.
