Lemme break it down for you... I do a lot of writing after work, and when I write I like to listen to music. Problem is I can't listen to anything with lyrics because it's distracting. So I listen to instrumental stuff, mostly soundtracks and movie scores because they are the easiest to find in large quantities. But I'm getting kinda bored rehashing the same shit that I always listen to ad nausea. So, what's good out there? Right now I'm listening to quite possibly the BEST video game sound track
Uprising! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRekX5R-LGc&p=2DC389C78E828226&index=9&feature=BF)
Very great, underrated game.
Also, I've got the Conan and Advent Children soundtracks loaded as well, but that's about it.

Just because it's about a third of the music I listen to at this point, I'll list some of my favorites from video games.

Metroid- The Prime series especially has some nice music, probably just due to being orchestrated/bigger. Overall the music from the series is awesome.

Mass Effect- Not as big of an oomph as some other examples, but still quite good.

Guilty Gear- METAL!! Also, awesome. VERY awesome.

Odin Sphere- Not a very well known game, but a good soundtrack. I'd recommend it, at least.

God of War- Ok, so only if you like big, booming, epic tracks. Because that's about half of the soundtrack. But it's still good stuff.

Smash Bros.- Got a favorite Nintendo score? Look here and it's probably there!

Mario Galaxy- Both are good, but 2 has some really epic stuff. And some happy stuff. And... well ok, it has a lot, and it's good.

And last but not least...

Halo- Say what you will about the games, but the soundtracks are incredible. Probably my favorite music from a game.

I'm a sucker for Super Nintendo-era videogame music (Chiptunes? Or is that exclusively 8-bit? I dunno). I'd recommend Kirby Super Star, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

For more recent stuff, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia (Or something to that effect, the title's long and I only ever remember the first two words anyway) has some great stuff, as does anything Pokemon related (My roommate has never played a game since Red/Blue, and he's got all the 4th gen stuff on his comp).

Unfortunately, most of the anime soundtrack stuff I have because it's sung by the voice actors/actresses, so it wouldn't help you any >.>

Big and Epic? Excellent. Metal? Even more excellent. I find instrumental metal is very hard to come by, and I put a premium on the stuff.

Apocalyptica is a band you might want to look into, then. I'm not a fan of their Metallica covers (Which is a LOT of their stuff), but it's mostly instrumental, and with a, well... Odd choice of instrument, I'll just say. I'd recommend looking up some on Youtube before finding out anymore on the band :P

Also, because this is easily my favorite remix ever, and doesn't require knowing the original tune to listen... Here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngH9ut0ayPM)

I'm also a fan of listening to instrumental music while I write, so I might be able to help.

More specifically, Sunslammer, (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/sunslammer) which is catchy and awesome, and Sunsetter, (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/sunsetter) which is an equally bitchin' chiptune version of the same song.

Every Star, Every Planet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk5O82ozO2U) is fun. Admittedly, most of Murray Gold's work for Doctor Who has been amazing, but I absolutely love this song. From the same series, there's something disturbingly catchy about Donna's theme as well. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj2YxlFj-XE)

Of course, as anyone could tell you, the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYMDQRVuXtA) Ace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_k1rPDRv6M&feature=related) Attorney (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y17ra7T18AE&feature=related) series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNRBdaDYCFs&feature=related) has (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiZsoMtHEAc) fantastic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-ZUFBRMWss) music, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6YwdreWfFs) but (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pucxhTspFrQ) you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZrQialji38) knew (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNOR3B_PoFs&feature=related) that, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg7A64rR168) right? I love OCRemixes. The only problem I have with them is it's like a tl;dr situation... you have to download every song before you can listen, and then download them when you like them... too much time. lol
Also, Apocalyptica is good. I like the Cello. Good suggestion.

Guild Wars has some epic and awesome music.

You may also be interested in Mythos, although they're very hard to find. Youtube only has 4-5 of their songs, and they're not even the good ones.

Super Earth Defense Force had some really rocking music.

Secret of Evermore had good music as well and interestingly enough it was composed by the same guy who did the Guild Wars music, Jeremy Soule.

I'm on the same level--I love music and like to listen to it while doing things ,but it's impossible for me to write when I've got most anything with lyrics. Thusly, I have a rather huge selection of video game and movie soundtrack music to help me out when the need arises.

There are some great instrumental versions of video game soundtracks out there. I know that the Ace Attorney games have had multiple interpretations of their beautiful music, as well as Super Smash Bros. Melee's thoroughly enjoyable Smashing... Live! The Black Mages are also always rather epic. Persona 4 and The World Ends With You both have good things to look into as is.

Also, pretty much anything from the Homestuck albums serve as great, lyric-free listening fodder. Maybe fractionally less so if you know the comic and can get distracted by remembering how awesome the context for the song is.

Now that I'm thinking about it... Bad Dudes (http://baddudesmusic.com/). Not the game, the ground of guys that remix shit. Some of it is iffy or relies on having played the related games, but other stuff is great.

Plus, they did an entire album of nothing but Sagat remixes. That takes balls.

I would highly suggest getting the 2 Donkey Kong OCRemiX albums

Suck it up and go through OC ReMix content. Don't forget to check out Dwelling of Duels, as well. You'll thank yourself down the road when you have tons of fun music.

I myself used to keep up with the site [like five or six years ago...] but now find the date of the most recent submission I have downloaded and kept and peruse/download for hours until I really can't stand it. I do this maybe once a year if I remember. Then I get rid of songs I don't like and keep the rest. It's not a great way to do it, but eh... Effort.

Seconding the following games'/game series' original soundtracks:
Guilty Gear
BlazBlue
Mass Effect
Halo

I would also suggest, if you have access to it, anything by the Black Mages, the various FF soundtracks, orchestral releases, and so forth, as well.

Did someone say FF? Because FF13's battle theme is so good I hum it to myself for a lot of my 2-hour commute home for the weekends: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Qo_GhbQt4

Also, I effing love "The Man with the Machine Gun" from FF8's flashback battles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se21KZgT7tY

The soundtracks to Last of the Mohicans and Sunshine are the best I've ever heard. 28 Days Later also had a good one with the real standout being "In the House - In a Heartbeat" (its one of the songs I have on when running bleachers).

This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqORLlPg-84) has lyrics, but I don't understand them so, they don't count, right? This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0GtvWPF9zw&feature=related) plays right after the last song. It's epic.

Pokeymans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSdeJcWX14w)

Just a little extra Super Paper Mario song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=setG11tO8xs) for the evuls >:3

Yeah, most of my music hasn't got lyrics, I prefer lyrics-less stuff ^_^
