The SNES was a truly great system and it has a lot of great games, but which is your favorite? I never had a SNES growing up, so I loved it whenever I got an opportunity to play one. Games that always got me excited were Super Mario World, A Link to the Past and TMNT: Turtles in Time. The game I consider to be my favorite was never on that list though, it was just another one of those games that was pretty cool. I only choose it as my favorite in retrospect, and by it I mean ActRaiser!

ActRaiser is just great; in my mind one of the greatest. There's all the usual reasons of course, but what it comes down to is that YOU'RE PLAYING AS GOD (The Master in the American version)! Demons have taken your followers by force after they put you down for a nap, with there fists! Now you have to come down to Earth and take care of it personally. How? You inhabit one of the coolest-looking statues ever, as seen here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYgYCJ8eCNI).

That's just half of it though. You have to guide your people to prosperity in some great sim-levels, playing as his servant Angel. Kill flying monsters that terrorize the villages of your world and use miracles like rain, lightning and earthquakes to kill those monsters and assist the people by destroying rocks, melting snow and powering wind mills. This part is a lot more fun than it sounds.

Oh yeah, there's the music. You saw the video above, now listen to these:

So, what are your choices?

Earthbound is definitely on the list, as is Megaman X. Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger for good measure.

Three of those are just absolutely amazing jRPGs, worth my time and more. Megaman X takes the Megaman formula, evolves it, and improves upon it. Plus, it's pretty.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is the epitome of videogaming. It's all been downhill since Konami's magnum opus.

Yeah, pretty much all the staples.
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire I/II, Link to the Past, Mario games everywhere.

And uh...NBA Jam.
It's a guilty pleasure, but definitely had some enjoyable times with it as a kid.

F-Zero and NOT Mario Kart becuase F-Zero is fast and cool and Mario Kart was slow and terrible and boring until it became Mario Kart 64.

Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Breath of Fire II, Secret of Mana, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI...

If I absolutely have to pick a single one then I'll say Breath of Fire II, on the grounds that it had a cute mushroom girl in it. Who was also a guy. Because they're a plant and plants are weird like that.

You ain't the only one. But then again if it's an RPG, I've played it. The only RPG I've yet to beat is FF6.

I mean, I played and beat BRAINLORD ffs!

Illusion of Gaia was nothing after collecting all the gems.

Lufia II was all about the Ancient Cave

Lufia I needs a remake.

Earthbound is, was, and always will remain the shit.

And BoF II... Dear god did that game put me through an emotional roller coaster.

Even though CT was good, it just can't compare when you think of Rand... And his mom.

Call me crazy here, but I never really liked Earthbound. I get so much shit for this, but I just do not see the appeal of the game, and really never did. What is it about it? Why is this a good game?

Earthbound had a really quirky sense of humor. First, it's a play on Dragon Quest. Second, there's a lot of subtle references that people seem to miss. The Beatles music, the fact that there were some really strong monsters disguised as clumsy robots, the town names (Onett, Twoson, Threed), the fact that the battle system isn't all that interesting but it's the game itself and the situations that you get into as Ness that really make it a far unique experience from any other game out there.

Sure, we have the Persona series as well as Parasite Eve, that have started making modern RPG games, but Earthbound was one of the first that I recall to do so on the SNES (Shadowrun notwithstanding)

Since all my usual obvious favorites are already mentioned, I can only remedy the fact that we've gone this long in the thread with no mention of Mega Man X.

I am shamed, and second this belatedly.

Contra III
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Demon's Crest

Yeah, those are the ones from the top of my head that didn't get a mention yet. Earthbound was fucking great, Chrono Trigger as well just like the MMX games, Lufia II, Super Mario World and others already mentioned.

Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen- best game of all time.
Also no mention of Terranigma yet- action rpg Zelda style but in a large world which you can change and develop-like you help someone develop electricity and the cities all get wired up and things. Interesting and very poignant story too.

Super Metroid's my favourite. DKC2, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, Secret of Mana 3, and all the Quintet games are runners up.

Probably cause Terranigma never got a stateside release, just us PAL people.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Earthworm Jim
Mortal Kombat

I didn't play all that many games on SNES, I wasn't into RPGs/JRPGs. These were literally the only games I played when I had the system.

But if there was one game I wish I could have played it's Shaq Fu. Obviously that's the greatest fighting game ever made.

Does this make up for our continual massive delays in gettign games which are expensive as fuck?.....
No, it doesn't.

Overall no, but to be fair Terranigma was a really good game.

Anyway, my fab SNES five would have to be Super Mario Allstars, Breath of Fire 2, Earthbound, Lufia & The Fortress of Doom, and Super Punch-Out!!

Dammit, Smarty, I was gonna be the different one and say Ogre Battle!

Everybody has already said all the bestest SNES games of all time, it would be pointless for me to just repeat them.

So...uh...Final Fantasy V, even though I never played it on the SNES. There.

Oh, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors was always fun for a lark.
