Which of you guys likes this Idiocracy movie? I'm asking so I know who to HATE FOREVER.

No I guess it's pretty funny but I seem to hear a lot of this movie's fans actually buying into the movie's (I'm assuming) extremely hyperbolic 'warning'. This seems pretty douchey. But hey, if you want to nuture a massive superiority complex* by indulging in the self-serving fantasy that is Idiocracy, be my guest.

Idiocracy is a great example of something that is ruined by it's fans for me, esspecially considering how many of them I have personally encountered who would likely be passengers on the Golgafrinchan Ark Fleet Ship B (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Restaurant_at_the_End_of_the_Universe). Feel free to offer a counter-argument, or simply share something you would enjoy pretty well except for it's fans.

*Yes I am aware of the irony of feeling superior to people who feel superior. An xkcd for reference (http://xkcd.com/774/)**

** Oh hey another (http://xkcd.com/603/) xkcd reference!

Yeah. I see this on Reddit a lot and it's starting to grate me. About every week or so a new version of "So who else thinks the world is really turning into Idiocracy?" crops up.

Another xkcd for reference. (http://xkcd.com/603/) Edit: You ninja edited this one in. Damn.

Someone add Idiocracy to Hype Backlash (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HypeBacklash).

Yes, I enjoy stranding you all on TVTropes.

Oh man Reddit as a whole is basically like exactly what I'm talking about. BTW did you catch the whole thing with the uh, 'racist but not' restaraunt owner? Can't decide between racist, troll, or racist troll.

I guess Reddit would be another thing that bothers me b/c of it's fans/ userbase! Like, I read Reddit to remind myself to stay away from 4Chan.

So, you don't think "Ow, My Balls!" would be a hit?

Idiocracy was funny. I saw it one time.

I'm not sure why there are people saying things like "Man, Idiocracy appears to be right over the horizon seeing this".

Idiocracy already happened. We live in an Idiocracy right now. OUR TIME IS NOW.

EDIT: BTW why do you have a problem with these fans? Is it that they are finding fault with things that are actually not idiotic but are simply contrary to their opinions or something? Like I'd say reality television is by and large a sign we live in an Idiocracy, as that is one thing the movie made fun of. However, if it's like, "YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN (INSERT LAW HERE)? MAN ARE WE LIVING IN AN IDIOCRACY OR WHAT?" then I see if you have a problem with all these "superior" people (especially if they are of the dreaded LIBERTARIANS).

So, you don't think "Ow, My Balls!" would be a hit?

My whole problem with that bit was that physical comedy has been around since forever and even pretty cultured people used to like it pretty well. I'm not saying that I enjoy shows like Jackass or, indeed, Americas Funniest Home Videos, but yeah I'll chuckle if a dude gets kicked in the balls.

Is it that they are finding fault with things that are actually not idiotic but are simply contrary to their opinions or something?

My problem is that they belive in something that isn't the case at all and has no basis in meaningful reality. Just becuase you don't like reality tv and that the people who they film in these shows aren't always portrayed as very smart doesn't mean that it is making people stupid or that it is less valid an entertainment form than Wrestleing, Telenovelas, certain terrible sci fi shows, et al. It's very judgemental and ass-backwards to make these sort of correlations and it is basically the same type of fringe logic used by, for instance, Jack Thompson about video games.

Like, it's not good to be stupid and to revel your own ignorance but that is in some ways what these paticular fans seem to be doing. The world is not going to get worse becuase poor uneducated people have too many children. If it get's worse it will be because smart and evil people who grab power will take advantage of them.

EDIT: I'm probably overstating my case somewhat. It's not like I don't think there are stupid or terrible shows or dumb people who should probably wise-up. Idiocracy as any sort of real problem is just a fantasy though.

Is this more about realizing you are in the Idiocracy and being annoyed, then? :D

Wait idiocracy is that movie where everyone in the future is superdumb contrary to a trends in human intelligence thatwe know off?
And fuck I work with "intellectuals"- they are as stupid as "regular" people just there stupidity is in certain areas.

That xkcd strip is everything I know about Idiocracy. I decided it's everything I needed to know. A popular movie telling people that other people are stupid and that the world is in danger from their stupidity and making those un-facts common knowledge may be just about the last thing we needed. So, ruined by the fans, I guess.

Heck, I'm going to watch it now to see how this "warning" is horsecrap.

Is it wrong that I seem them as Zerg, Palin as Kerrigan, and their American Flags as creep?Yes because Kerrigan was and still is a fine upstanding and classy lady, both in and out of her Zerg phase, and I'll not have you tarnish the Queen of Blades by inferring that she is anything like that crazy Alaskan.

How is it any different from regressive movements throughout history? Movements like Tea Party have always existed.

The people who watch Idiocracy and think the point is that the human race is getting dumber because stupid people are breeding too much or whatever are the same people who watched Beavis and Butthead and thought the point was that frogball would be an awesome sport.

How is it any different from regressive movements throughout history? Movements like Tea Party have always existed.

It's not even really a new movement, just a re-branding of the same crazy motherfuckers we've had since... shit, at least as far back as Goldwater.

What I find hilarious is that people who think this are themselves stupid because genetic factors in intelligence are minimal. While stupider people will tend to have stupider kids overall this is mostly to do with how they raise them- the fact that stupider people are in lower socio-economic groups and not really Stupid people shouldn't have stupid kids.
And, you know, the fact that collective IQ is continually, measurably rising over time.

So I'm getting that Idiocracy is some movie or something?

Seriously, I've never heard of it.

I have heard of this, (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3767487358149440770#) and met people who've taken it seriously.

The only funny part of that movie was the evolution of that restaurant chain. I don't remember exactly how it goes, it was something like as humanity got dumber and dumber it went from FuttNutters to ButtFuckers or something. Not too much comedy for a full feature movie though.

The ones that were already laughed into the obscurity of history don't worry me as much as the current one with the implicit backing of a major media network opposed by, when it's opposed at all, the most milquetoast "Let's all be friends" media in the history of free speech and one comedian.

Like, I have every confidence the Tea Party will bloviate itself into irrelevance, but I worry about what it's doing to the political landscape in the meantime.

Toppling terrible governments and politicians is the aim, not integrating them into the Swarm.

Hell, even TIME did an article on it. A big one. When TIME is pointing out that the leaders and talking heads of the Tea Party include all the leaders and talking heads from the GOP, without even trying to apologize for it (in fact, the article was on the attack, which surprised me), you know you pretty well have something there.

Remember the "white collar riots" in 2000 when the Florida Supreme Court ruled for Gore, that turned out to be like 13 GOP staffers acting like idiots in front of one news camera?

The Tea Partiers are a (somewhat) bigger version of that.

I have some bad news for you.

Well, yeah, but I mean... Let's take Glenn Beck for example. As evidenced by the title and content (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arguing_with_Idiots) of this book, Glenn would see himself as, at least, a 'Corporal Joe Bauers' in a world of 'Fritos'. He's sort of the guy I'm talking about, although such people exist on the other end of the political spectrum as well, or somewhere between.

EDIT: Apparently some people are not familar with this movie. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy)

I like the part in Idiocracy where he is sentenced to fight the giant monster trucks with his little dickmobile. I think our justice system should be more like Idiocracy.
