Alright everyone. So there has been a lot of positive feedback regarding the halloween colors and the background image. A jack o'lantern isn't exactly appropriate for the remainder of the year however, so we are looking for a new one.

Requirements: it has to fit in with the default scheme of the forums, therefore I don't want anything too bright, anything that will clash, etc. It has to look good. If you need information on the CSS attributes and hex color codes we use I will provide those.

Prize: we have a working mailserver and the admin/moderator team is being set up with @nuklearforums.com email addresses. I know it's just a stupid email but it's not like we can provide anything tangible so the person who submits the winning background image can have a nuklearforums.com email address.

Was just posting this suggestion in the other topic:

How about, as a background image, the image of the Light Warriors from when they were in that pocket dimension? That big comic panel with multiple copies of everyone.

Something like the bottom of this (http://www.nuklearpower.com/2005/03/26/episode-532-20-power-loaders-vs-20-alien-queens/), but without the text balloon. Or is that too busy?

That would be a great idea, I think. Doesn't look like it will loop, but no one would notice. Maybe a bit brighter, though.

If implemented the idea might seem not so good anymore, though.

It looks like it would be a little too busy, yeah.

Whoa, hello there, Geocities background.

That is busy, even for something we'll only see "between" page elements. You'd need to mute that, perhaps with a semi-opaque layer filled with the forum background color over top of the image.

Personally, I'd say something with "NPF" tiled smoothly would be neat instead of just clips from the comic(s). But we don't currently have an official NPF logo. Hmm. Perhaps when I get home I will play around with this.

My first attempt. Let me know what you think.

EDIT: Also going to throw out that the particular shade of gray I went with is to match the outermost border that the image will be in contact with.

I like this one.

I think it'd be pretty cool, especially if we could stretch it and add some more grey.

Honestly, I think anything tiled (except for things that are specifically created to be tiled for wall paper) would get kind of old after awhile.

Like say, after one weekend.

That was my concern. http://i54.tinypic.com/246t7yr.png

If you guys wanted to use that one, you could just let me know what size, and how much more gray around the outside you want.

Also, here's a Warbot one.

This is its original size, so if we wanted it bigger, we'd have to stretch it.

Exactly like that.

I wonder if we could use the rotating banner php to make a randomized wallpaper...

For reference I would prefer something that can stretch as well. I won't be using another tiled wallpaper unless it "works".

Fortunately we can fix the wallpaper to be unmoving so it wouldn't matter how long the thread gets.

Stuff!

Can the forum handle .SVG? Because that would really help on the stretching end. Otherwise you get things pixellated.

I ask this because between Flash and Inkscape, I can convert any image we want that way to full vector. Flat colors would work best, honestly.

You will have tiling unless you can get it to stretch to fit the space regardless of resolution, as any size you pick may not be the size of each user's browser window.

Am I being a buzzkill if I say, this late in the game, that this is a dumb idea and I don't like it? 'Cause it's a dumb idea and I don't like it.

You could have the background behind the image be the same color as the border, and then just have the image centered without any sort of tiling turned on, couldn't you? The image will be different sizes depending on the user's resolution, but it'd still work.

I like this idea. Stretching usually ends up ugly.

Same here. I despise background images.

Also, image stretching isn't going to happen until browsers all get CSS3 compliant. Which, to my knowledge, is still in process, as it were.

I'm starting to wonder if anyone can post an example of a "professional" site that uses a tiled image background these days. One that does it well, at any rate.

Just throwing it out cause I like shades of grey. (http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv324/immortalpictures/npfbg.jpg)

But DUDE. GEOCITIES MAN.

Edit: But seriously, the unscrolling background REALLY bugs me. Heck, someone looked over my shoulder while I was browsing NPF, and said, "Oh, is that one of those crappy free forums? I can't stand those things, the backgrounds are so annoying."

In any case removed the BM background.

Thank you. I could feel the biting condescension in his voice. It bit into my soul.
