Any bets on which book they're picking? I know the Hogfather's already had a live action version done.

EDIT: TvTropes gives me this list of video adaptations.

Terry Pratchetts Hogfather Made For TV Movie (2006), an adaptation of Hogfather.
The Colour Of Magic Made For TV Movie (2008), an adaptation of The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic
Going Postal, Made For TV Movie (2010), an adaptation of Going Postal
Unseen Academicals Made For TV Movie, scheduled for 2012.

Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters have animated films already. Not sure if any others do.

Guards, Guards seems pretty likely. Mort as an outside shot.

EDIT: I'm fairly torn in that it could be cool OR Disney could just go down the list of terrible cliches that Pratchett assiduously strips out of / subverts in his work and then hamfistedly jam them all back in. Cause, y'know. Disney.

EDIT: OH hey Wee Free Men also pretty likely; certainly the most Disney-esque Pratchett story I can think of offhand. Plus if it's a hit you've got that audience on the hook for three sequels.

EDIT: Plus MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERCH, soooooooo much fucking merch

Plush Pictsies, action-figure pictsies, cheap shitty pictsie toys in every McDonalds Happy Meal.

EDIT: Goddamn if Disney isn't adapting Wee Free Men they're out of their fucking minds, just look at all the money sitting on this table.

Wee Free Men also has the advantage of being part of its own standalone series, so it's a little easier to do a movie of it. A lot of the other Discworld novels swap characters and continuity around like horny teenagers swap fluids.

wee free men is too Smurfy i am sure they would want to avoid it for that reason.

I'm trying to think of a reason why this is wrong but so far I've only gotten as far as "BECAUSE I SAY SO, SHUT UP"

tiny and blue is about where the smurfness stops, really

Smurfs weren't also drunk cow thieves with super strength and speed and a bad attitude and based off Scotts (that might have been redundant)

This is sort of what I'm afraid of. Disney completely missing the point and approaching it like generic fantasy. Discworld In Name Only. Can anyone tell me about the directors SWB's link mentions?

Let me LET ME GOOGLE THAT FOR YOU for you!

... They are evidently a directing team which together have made:

* The Great Mouse Detective (1986) (director)
* The Little Mermaid (1989) (director)
* Aladdin (1992) (director)
* Hercules (1997) (executive producer)
* Treasure Planet (2002) (director)
* The Princess and the Frog (2009) (director)

A pretty decent resume as disney movies go but not necessarily reassuring if you're looking for reasons to believe they aren't going to make sweeping changes to things.

that and the hierarchy and the "one chick and a shit ton of guys" thing. Its very clear that they are a loving parody/ripoff of smurfs.

and Scotts

How well known are the smurfs on a world basis, really?

Regardless of how it is now (especially among current children), I expect the answer will be "fairly well" after the movie comes out.

I can't see them doing Guard, Guards!. Fifth is probably right, Wee Free Men makes the most sense. But there are others they could do, I suppose.

Their similarity/parodying of the Smurfs would actually make Disney MORE likely to do Wee Free Men, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure they've done like a zillion movies already with little fairy people in them. Pretty sure there was one pretty recently, in point of fact (can't remember what it was called, though. The Last Mimzy? A Mimzy sounds like a frickin' little fairy person thing. I have no idea, though).

I dunno. I really don't think disney should be doing this, cause even wee free men isn't very well-suited to being made into a kids' movie. And if disney tries to force it... eh. I don't think it'll work.

To those who haven't seen them, the live action films are actually pretty good- not great but worth the time to watch them.
I reckon equal rites would make a disney movie- as long as you sidelined/rewrote Granny.

Which might make it a good movie, but would be the very reason it wouldn't be a good Discworld movie

I'm off the opinion that removing Granny Weatherwax is such a massive net positive that any lost Discworld points are worth it.

I'm of the opinion that fucking around with anything TP does is a bad idea and would detract from the final product regardless of how I feel about the character being fucked around with.
