I actually prefer the AAF version to the original.

Is this one of those threads where we "ironically" list bad examples ? Cause those are awful massacring of pretty good songs. Especially alien ant farm just not getting a song but covering it anyway.

TMBG doing their song Birdhouse in Your Soul. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAbZzdalZh4)
vs.
Lemon Demon does a strange take on it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnXUm5CMbhs)
Iron Maiden's Hallowed be thy Name. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J51LPlP-s9o)
vs.
Cradle of Filth's interpretation. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91h6qUikXjA)
Scorpions doing Still Loving You. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pep6nREBpS8)
vs.
Sonata Arctica's version of the song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00pRnGoYtY0)
Honestly, I don't get the "purist" rage that seems to build up around covers. "They ruined the song" is such a stupid way of putting it. There's a bad cover, and they can and sometimes will do a song poor justice, but it's never bad to hear another take on something. (I actually prefer SA's version of Still Loving You, and depending on mood generally lean towards Cradle's Hallowed by thy Name.)

"Getting a song"
"Getting"
What? I only care about what sounds good. Both songs in the above case were good but I prefer the infusion of some rock.

Blind Guardian's cover of To France is a great listen. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1FYWJyO2K0)
Also Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCwigPhpiXs) With Eruption in front, of course.
And that's all I can really remember right now, but both awesome!

Yeah I prefer AAFs version of Smooth Criminal too.
Only other one I can think of right now though is Firewinds cover of Maniac (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmhZFV3WbDM) which I recently discovered.

Honestly i'm not sure what's to "get" about a song such as Smooth Criminal, i mean, the AAF version basically is just a "speed up" version of the original with a bit more guitar up front... I do tend to enjoy faster songs more than slow ones so it feels right for me.
Specially since that song is only full in meaning on it's video clip, which by itself was already an homage to Fred Astaire and his movies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuJxYmJlEHY&feature=related
So, ok, the AAF version looses that connection, but their intent was never really to make an Homage to Astaire or even to MJ (in a certain way) but just to give a new "current" beat to an Excellent song.

AAF's "Smooth Criminal" is a pale shadow of failure compared to Jackson's oozing of bad-assery and ultimate smoothness in the original.
Smooth Criminal is like Thriller, you can't compare a cover of the song without taking into consideration the music video that went with it, because that was half the greatness of the song. There is no comparison.
edit:
I have trouble finding any cover of "Paint it Black" that isn't goth, screamo, really screamy heavy metal, or that just has a tone that doesn't go with the subject of the song. I found one cover of it that was great, and would have been amazing, but the singer had a heavy accent that made most of the words slur. That's not really his fault, and they tried to do as faithful a cover of it as they could.
Also, Tahr, you can really ruin a cover like a bad plane crash. That American Pie cover by Madonna was just...just...it just was.

Yeah. I was pretty much putting that nicely. I've heard complete butcherings better fit for slashfic pr0n soundtracks than homages to a band.

ITT, SMB doesn't know what "subjectivity" means.
ITT, people say "this thing that you say sucks doesn't because opinions." In other threads, people say "this thing that you say rocks doesn't because I say so (with occasional 'and this is why')." Everyone who argues the former is, in my experience, also guilty of the latter, which ultimately makes their attempts at arguing the former come off as a little ridiculous. SMB himself is a perfect example of this. I'm not saying you can't respond to someone's critique of something you like with "Well, that's just how I feel about it" or something similar. What I am saying is that trying to shut down someone's complaints about something with this sort of thing is almost always hypocritical.
As for covers, I can't really name any that I find superior to the originals, but the Marylin Manson cover of This Is Halloween (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU6iP0WLsU8&feature=related) is pretty decent. It's probably the only decent song on the Nightmare Revisited soundtrack.

Am I close?
Olbermann's Worst Person In the World segment? See, that's actual hyperbole: not being inaccurate by way of exaggeration, but rather as a stylistic device. He wasn't literally calling whoever the worst person in the world. There's always a unicorn rapist somewhere who'd get the prize if it was.

Also Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on her Magical Ukulele (http://music.amandapalmer.net/album/amanda-palmer-performs-the-popular-hits-of-radiohead-on-her-magical-ukulele) is pretty awesome.

I know this because the singer went bald before S&M was released)
An instrumental cover of Stairway to Heaven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ6A1ggC5hE). Technically it's a capella, but there are no lyrics except the screams of the damned.
EDIT: Then there's of course Apocalyptica covering plenty of metal and rock songs, mostly from Metallica, on their Cellos. I mention this because many people haven't even heard of Apocalyptica even though they are more famous than... some people.

I can''t currently find the acoustic version video (they originally did this cover and later made a "hard rock" version by plugging in) of Meatbee doing the Transformer's theme.
It's by no means the best version, and perhaps not even that special. However, the slower strums of the acoustic guitar and her delivery of the lyrics make for what I think is a unique and interesting cover. Your mileage may vary.

I'm not sure what's going on, but I think this the same cover by Dope, that I've already linked. Look in the comments, and you'll see it gets mentinoed.
Maybe Manson was part of Dope (don't know anything about the band), or maybe the creator of YouTube just stuck the song to random Manson footage.
I really don't know.

You should probably compare Stevie Ray Vaughan's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GSpbuFSr2o) rendition of Voodoo Chile next to Hendrix' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoAXW30mMAg&feature=related) original. (Note: SRV version is a live recording, while the Hendrix one is a studio recording)
The only problem here is really that it ain't Finnish! Which can actually be plus depending how Finnish I feel at the moment, but uhm, like you know, Finn power!
And while speaking about Hendrix, there's Finnish cover with Finnish lyrics that could be said to be so bad that it's absolutely hilarious.
Oh, just remembered a good one...

Do you mean this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z73aUSgm7Ag) or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAEJgFIXl4c&feature=related)?
Neither. I don't think the live clips come out well, and the second is the "hard rock" version of it they did to try to get it into the Dreamworks movie [if rumors are true].

A tad intense, but a certainly interesting cover of Eleanor Rigby (Pain) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhRFFe28plo&feature=related)

Dragonland - Neverending Story (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGP5LgUsvK0)
Turn around,
and look at what you see
In her face,
the mirror of your dreams
Make belive I'm everywhere,
living in your eyes
Written on pages
is the answer to our
Neverending Story
Reach the stars,
fly a fantasy
Dream a dream,
and what you see will be
Rhymes that keep their secrets,
will unfold behind the clouds
And there upon the rainbow
is the answer to our
Neverending Story,
Story
Have no fear,
for she may fade away
In your hands,
for each a new day
Rhymes that keep their secrets,
will unfold behind the clouds
And there upon the rainbow,
Is the answer to our
Neverending Story,
Neverending Story,
Neverending Story

Lion Covering a song written by Anne Bryant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4rBJu9IPTY&feature=related)
No, I'm pretty sure that's an original song, not a cover. The Lion theme is from the 1986 movie. Yes, it is slightly based off the TV shows theme, but only lyrics wise. Everything else is original.
The Black Lab version of this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zn4p_gnJQzs&feature=related), is a cover.

TECHNICALLY true, but just barely. I don't think this actually crosses the line between cover, and original. The melody, and lyrics are retained. It's more like..... an extended mix.

Black Lab has no business calling it's Emo remix of the greatest 80's theme song legitimate.
