Just picked up this Graphic Novel a few days ago - short, but pretty good. Shepard Book's backstory told in, essentially, flashbacks starting from just before his final scene in the movie Serenity. I knew that Joss Whedon wanted him to be a bad man, but guys, Shepard Book is seriously a bad bad man. This will be, I belive, the 4th Firefly/ Serenity book (Those Left Behind, Better Days and Float Out).

I didn't think the ideas in this were bad I just thought they'd have been better ideas for an entirely different character.
I'd have much rather had Book be a guy who really sincerely believed in the alliance and didt terrible shit in its name because he thought it was the right thing to do than have him be a resistance spy all along.

I think that on this particular point they may have been hedging their bets with respect to fan reaction.

I agree with Fifth on his second point there, though. I always imagined Book was more like the Operative from the movie.
Anyways, I'm glad they finally deigned to answer those questions. My biggest complaint about the movie was that they refused to shed any light on that.

I'm striking this comic from my personal canon, like Wash's death and the existence of River Tam. (In my canon, Simon Tam is on the run because he's caring for his very sickly puppy, which the alliance wants because it is just too gosh-darn cute of a puppy and the Alliance's dad won't let him get his own).

It is a puppy so cute, so adorable, so unnaturally irresistible, that if it were to but wag it's tail a certain way, almost every human being on the planet would immediately lie down and die. Having nothing else left to live for.
A small fraction of the population would be driven mad by the desire to see the puppy, taking to the stars to pillage, raid, and love tenderly everyone and everything until they find the puppy once again.

Quick; let's find the guys in charge of the Buffy reboot and let them know we have a pitch for them!

Pretty cold-blooded to kill a random dude with piano wire and steal his identity forever and ever. Just a thought.
Also I kinda like what they did with Book's life - it was complicated more than, say, The Operative's... even moreso than I expected it to be.
