View Full Version : Let's Watch... something, I dunno.

I posted this in the Let's Play thread, but that's probably not the right audience. So, I'll repost it here.

_mike and I have an idea. A "Let's Watch" idea. The sum and whole of this idea is we watch a bad anime, talk about it, then post a recording of our banter for you guys to watch along with a free, legal stream of something. I can pretty much guarantee that what we say will be funny, I just want to know two things.

One: would anyone be interested in listening to an off-the-cuff, anime version of MST3K (but not as good) and

Two: Do you have any recommendations for bad anime for us to comment on. We're looking for something we haven't watched, ideally but not necessarily from the 80's or early 90's, and hopefully less than 30 episodes. Keep in mind when recommending something that the idea is to make us suffer.

Really, the only difference from our normal Saturday night is that we won't be watching Fist of the North Star and that we'll have microphones, so us getting this started and completed isn't an issue. We just want to know if anyone would enjoy this.

Remember, make us suffer. Or, just post if you'd like to hear us suffer. This thread is to test the waters.

I actually considered something like this a while back but never got around to it. I'm for it, and I'd definitely check it out. Only problem is I can't think of anything awful enough to recommend. Eiken, maybe?

AIR GEAR

So you guys are going to look at the mistakes of others from afar and pass judgment on their work?

That doesn't sound very nice.

Nique

Netflix is overflowing with bad anime. I recommend the Xenosaga Anime which was more awful than the game. You could also do american cartoons - the Spaceballs series was just... I mean, you asked us to make you suffer, that is the definition.

Eiken, and take a shot of something everytime a boob bounces. Two shots when both boobs bounce.

You're one to talk.

Seriously the correct answer is Air Gear, it is the worst, which is to say the best, which is to say the worst.

There is a guy in this anime whose rollerblades are on fire all the time

EDIT: Air Gear is like if you took that scene in Back to the Future where Biff Tannen's grandson in THE FUTURE is all like "you can't go on water if you don't have POWEEEEEEEEEER", and turned it into an entire anime

I just want to see how long they last before the liver poisoning sets in.

We could take bets about how far they make it and which character offs them.

sounds more like mystery science theater to me, just with anime. Bonus if you use silhouette personas

but you gotta go beyond bad and into laughably horrible, ideally obscure too.

If there are no free. legal streams, keep this coming. Nine responses so fast was unexpected.

Fruits Basket is pretty retarded, but it's kind of a young girls anime so I dunno it's kind of like ripping on My Little Pony.

none that are to crappy anime. but like I said if you go crappy and obscure, stuff no one cares about anymore, I dont think it matters too much.

Fruits Basket is pretty retarded, but it's kind of a young girls anime so I dunno it's kind of like ripping on My Little Pony.Mike watched that years ago. However, I'm pretty sure that Fruits Basket is on Funimation's site, so maybe we'll go with that.

Keep suggesting! Include links!none that are to crappy anime. but like I said if you go crappy and obscure, stuff no one cares about anymore, I dont think it matters too much.It matters in that I can post links and ensure that everyone is watching the same thing with the same timing. Also, NPF rules. I'm not going to ask people to download illegal fansubs.

Can't find one for Eiken unfortunately. You can do Lady Death via Netflix (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Lady_Death/70012336?trkid=1998474#height1608). It's rated pretty poorly. Same for Popotan (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Popotan/70018979?trkid=1998474).

Noncon, you know how you have to pay for Netflix? That makes it not free. And isn't Popotan porn?

I don't know. I haven't watched either. Haven't even watched Eiken. I just went to Netflix streaming and found some of the lowest rated animes.

Not Netflix Lady Death Link (http://www.crunchyroll.com/lady-death/-lady-death-lady-death-movie-505108)

See, the thing with that is that crunyroll has commercials of differing length, so everyone wouldn't be synched. Lets go with this: something that's on youtube (licensed, of course). That way, everyone can watch the same thing we're watching. Or somewhere without commercials.

But this enthusiasm means we'll do something by Saturday. Thanks for everyone's support.

Watching 15 seconds of Lady Death makes me want to find a usable link, though. Too bad it's just a movie, but it would make a good starting point.

You know, hey, mods, do you have a problem with us recommending that people watch our stuff with Adblock enabled? 'Cause Lady Death looks absolutely perfect. And crunchyroll are buttholes anyway. And folks can watch it on Netflix.

Fifthfiend

Air Gear is on Youtube. Lady Death The Movie is somewhat terrible but only of middling terribleness next to the supernova-like terribleness of Lady Death the comic book.

While I've never watched it, my friend tells me that Fushigi Yuugi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IELszZWh2Qk) is brain-numbingly terrible, and my friend is a fan of the series.

Not from what I saw. And I'm not opposed to watching girl-anime! I was totally into Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Kim

Actually, Fruits Basket is a somewhat enjoyable shoujo romp. Flawed in many, many ways, but decent, and with some well done emotional moments. It's neither awesome nor awful. However, saying all that isn't as fun as saying "fuck you" so yeah.

I did something much like this once before with some people on a wii-forum, and we had a great deal of fun. I would very much like to see how this turns out with the mildly neurotic denizens of NPF at the mic.

Personally, I'd think it would be more fun with interested NPF folks joining in on it rather than just watching and listening to two people.

I don't know. Maybe you're super hilarious.

Too many people and the potential for it to be terrible rises drastically.

Too many people and the potential for it to be terrible rises drastically.I am not opposed to these proposals, just to organizing them. Also, this won't be super-hilarious. It will be more like... how did _mike put it... circa 2007 Let's Play level.

But, yeah, in my current mind set, even I'm not sure what the appeal is. Then again, watching Let's Plays is a confusing past time as well, so I'm not sweating it too much. If it's boring, we can just drop it.

Good news, everyone: we have a pilot. Now, the show isn't streaming, but I'm sure you can find a copy of the Mirai Nikki OVA that came out this week. So, get that and play this (http://www.mediafire.com/file/ouq569bacnultgx/Pilot-%20Mirai%20Nikki%20OVA.mp3) in the background.

If this doesn't turn everyone off to this game of ours, then we're ready to roll with a free, legal stream of something something as early as tomorrow.

EDIT: Ok, nobody commented on the pilot. That's cool; it doesn't stop Kyanbu from posting his stories. So, here's the first proper episode, (http://www.mediafire.com/file/8g2aox199d84a1f/Let%27s%20Watch%20with%20phil_mike%20Baldr%20Force %20episode%201.mp3) to be watched with this, the first episode of Baldr Force EXE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQM6O4bDMtg) on Funimation's channel. We had a little timing hiccup near the beginning, but I trust you to work around it.

And here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibPCLMH1NM4) the link to the thing we were talking about during the opening song.

Another edit concerning the below: I appreciate that.

tried to watch. got frustrated syncing the youtube video. :/

EDIT: Oh but I did want to say you guys... you have really good voices for this sort of thing actually, so yeah I'ma try listening to that later.

phil_
12-14-2010, 09:14 PM
Ok Nique, from our exhaustive testing, we've concluded that what you should do is wait three seconds from when we say to press play before actually pressing play on youtube. If you want to watch it in full screen, be sure that you get it full screen before we say press play, then follow the previous instructions. But, yeah, three seconds will get you close enough. Our gibbering doesn't require super strict timing. We'll be sure to avoid the "clicking full screen" delay on the next episode.

Nice to hear that we have good voices for this, though. Thanks.

I'm curious; Would it be legally acceptable for someone to do a 'Let's Watch'/ 'Let's Play' with, like, clips as opposed to full video? I ask becuase this looks like a fun format to do video game reviews or color commentary (obviously there'd have to be a lot of editing).

Also, what are you using to record as far as hardware/software?

phil_
12-14-2010, 10:00 PM
I can't answer the first thing, but our recording setup is as follows:

Logitech microphone that we got with Rockband set in a make-shift mic stand consisting of a cardboard movie poster tube anchored in a trashbag box sitting between us, recording on Garage Band with the standard "Podcast: Male voice Narrator Noisy" effect. It's a really simple setup.

Another week, another episode.

Baldr Force episode 2. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBRFyudCzPI&list=SL)

Our recording. (http://www.mediafire.com/file/j0d3h6l4bxdo55w/Let%27s%20Watch%20with%20phil_mike%20Baldr%20Force %20episode%202.mp3)

We had some timing problems again, but we actually went back and solved them this time, so follow the instructions as we say them and you'll be cool. Also, this episode gets kinda messed up. See you next Saturday.

_mike

Ok, so we've reviewed the recordings. Here's my summary:

Episodes 1-3 were pretty bad. One and two had timing issues that robbed them of what little comedy value they had, and episode three was just not that funny. However, I think the last episode, episode four, stands pretty well on its own. Our timing is better and the bad references are at a minimum. What I would like is if the people who gave up on us at episode one would watch Baldr Force normally, and then watch our commentary for the last episode. Preferably, you'll watch the first three episodes with friends who'll make fun of it with you, and then listen to us make fun of the last one.

It's been fun anyway.
