View Full Version : Interest thread for a Let's Play

DSince we are creeping ever closer to Christmas, I was thinking of hosting a Let's Play to celebrate this festive time of peace and brotherly love.
That's right, I was thinking of playing Risk!
But, without players, Risk is no fun at all, of course.
Before I open a game thread (or maybe we can recycle this thread later on, or something. We'll talk, mods!), I'd first like to know in how far people would be interested in doing this.
It'll be played on a real life board I'll be having in my room.
So?
Who's up? Ideally, we're playing with 5 armies, and I'll be the Hand of God, rolling the various dice and stuff like that.
EDIT: Rules will be posted later on, but it'll be based on, what I think is called, Risk: Reinvention over there in the US. So NOT the classic Risk. This'll feature Objectives, although we'll probably be going for the world conquest game with the Objectives and their rewards thrown in for shit'n'giggles.
EDIT RARGH!: I forgot a tag. Also, didn't we have a Let's Play tag?

I have been planning, on my own/offline, the logistics of running an Axis and Allies "LP" using my game board, camera, and Photoshop wherein you folks would play (and participate in other ways). I have been waiting for enough free time to dedicate to making images, maintaining the board, etc. And people have been using my board to play actual games, so there's that.
Perhaps we could/should collaborate in some way.

That'd be interesting, but I have neither the game, nor the knowledge of it. I am more than willing to negotiate the order in which we play, since two boardgames at the same time is probably too much. Assuming NPF is even interested in some good old fashioned boardgames.

I am totally down for this. Ever since I saw the risk LP that was in that last LP thread I've been wanting to play something like this. Never played it on an actual real life board though, only in virtual games, so I duno what rules are different.

Fuck yes, that is rad. I've only played it once before, but I'd totally be getting in on this.
Risk is cool too, though.

Melfice, if we picked an order you'd go first, having been first to post about it.
As for collaboration, we can talk via PM about some of the ideas I had been thinking of, and I can also link you to threads on other forums that may serve as some inspiration.
In any case, if you don't mind, I'd like to also use this thread to generate interest, as the style of play/participation will likely be the same for both games and cater to a similar audience.

1: You're a mod. If you want the thread, you could just take it. (A joke)
2: No worries. Mi casa es su casa. Or thread. Whatever.
3: As for that PM, go for it! Though, again, I've never played A&A, but if I can help I'm willing to read up on it.
And let's decide order by way of democracy. Whomever's game is more popular goes first.

This seems less like a Let's Play than just like, a forum game or something.

I can see the reasoning behind that.
I'm also of the opinion that this kinda walks the line between an LP and Forum Game. If any of the mods agree with you, no doubt the thread'll be moved.

Dude, there are like seventy stupid pokemon LPs going on at any given time, and no one really complains. Two board games would be totally okay and awesome.

Yes, but there's only a minimum of viewer participation with LP's played by others.
But if there's enough interest, and people can play two boardgames at the same time - if they want - I see no problem with running two different games at the same time.

This is part of what I was mulling over. Ostensibly, the forum members participate in playing a game with the thread author being the mediator/"hand of God" as Melfice labeled it. However, recall that LPs are in a way the children of After Action Reports, threads recanting the tales of RTS games, often with narration and characters and, as they too evolved, containing thread reader participation/contributions. Giving rise to play-and-participate RTS threads, this style has been carried over in many ways to modern RTS LP threads. As a result, a few LP forums, SA's included, have lumped these in with the video game LPs [though they have no forum games section like we do].
I'm not sittin' on either side with the idea yet, though.

I don't care one way or another where these games go in the end, but if you look at it in a certain way, this will be more of a Let's Play than a game where one plays and the rest gives minute directions and comments.
In the end, the boardgames can go in either forum.
Regardless, the question remains. Who's up for murdering eachother's armies in the name of peace and brotherly love?

Pretty much why I brought it up is that a "Let's Play" is, in spite of the name, basically defined as a thing where one person plays and everyone else gives minute directions and comments. This plainly seems to be, not that, but rather just a bunch of people playing a game!
Actually TBH given the relative level of activity in FG I'd say the best thing to do is to kill the forum and just let people make whatever games-related threads they want here or in general or wherever. Or just kill "forum for talking about forum games" and make forum games open-posting.

Less talk of what is and is not an LP, more signing up for the LP! I want to know who my opponents might be, to better contemplate their imminent demises.

Hm.. I'll join, but I would need to brush up on how to play Risk. Also hello, I'm your local lurker.

I would play Risk. I would play the crap out of it.

I would totally play, however, I'd be, roughly speaking, the least reliable person ever right now with roughly four hours of commute per day. Really, it depends on how fast the turn-around is. The faster (as this is Christmas break for us starting Friday) the better for me. Aside from that, I'm all down for it!
EDIT: I meant Risk, as I've never played Axis and Allies. Sorry, I presumed (as NonCon has told me - that is something I shouldn't do) that my title indicated that. Sorry for the overly oblique reference.

Also, I guess this was a little bit stupid of me.
Since we have two boardgames on offer, I guess it would have been useful to specify which game you're interested in.
So far, I can only really tell Hawk, Nique and Geminex are in for Risk. And Geminex seems more interested in Axis and Allies anyway.
So... yeah. Probably handy if you'd edit that back in on your posts.
EDIT AGAIN: So, I've got Hawk and Geminex (I think?), Sage Harpula, Nique and tacticslion. If not Geminex, preferring Axis and Allies instead, I think either Token or Nonsy would play instead?
Fight it out amongst yourselves!
Well, with a maximum cap of five players, this means the roster is (more than) full.
Gimme a day or two to draft up some (house-) rules, and we'll be good to go!
Most of the rules will be thought up on my own, but I noticed it bears some similarities with the rules on the Risk LP (http://lparchive.org/Risk/) on the LPArchive. It'll be a decent guideline for reading up in any case.

I found my Risk 2 disk today so I decided to get my eye in with a few practice games. I'm sure the computer fucking cheats.

Any computer version of boardgames do. :(
No way the computer matches my dice rolls FIVE times in a single battle. EXACTLY matching it. (This is in Risk: Factions on the Xbox 360)
In any case, today has been busy, so I'll be typing down the rules tomorrow in a new thread, officially kicking off the Let's Play for Risk (After definitive sign-ups in aforementioned thread, of course).
The discussion on whether or not this goes in Playing Games as a Let's Play or Forum Games as a... well... Forum Game can be fought out between the mods in the secret mod palace/torture tower/abattoir/den of sexual debauchery/whatever they have that is moddy and secret. The game-thread can then later be moved, if necessary.
