View Full Version : Naming stuff. Again.

Well, it's getting to the point where I'm realizing I need to break down and build a prototype for Battle. I already have a little something in C#, and it's looking, once again, like that's what I'll be using, since I just realized that putting it in Flash would cause a lot of visual issues, but that I can still use it to create the cutscenes and just export to AVI now that I know how it works.

Which brings me to a problem. I still don't have a name for the thing! I'm doing up some old web pages for myself and found it on there and realized that if I'm going to be releasing a demo soon, it needs a better name. I already came up with "The World That Is," but it's quite frankly too long and not all that interesting. "Battle" just isn't a good descriptor of what it's become and also isn't very interesting.

My problem is that I'm fine with coming up with names, but suck at changing them. It's been "Battle" for so long that that's just how I think of it. I also hesitate to toss it into my "Guiding Lights" titles, because Guiding Lights is all one world with a couple different stories in it. I mean, "Guiding Lights: some new name of the world" would be an okay title, but I don't have a name for the world, either. Maybe Lunaris from the emphasis put on the moon both in battle and in some of the story. "Guiding Lights: Lunaris" sounds pretty okay, but "Lunaris" is pretty heavily used. "Guiding Lights: Orion" sounds okay, too, but Orion doesn't have much to do with anything in any of the production and Orion has a billion hits, too.

If it helps, these are aspects of the world:
- the moon is fairly important
- the setting is pretty standard, with forests, plains, deserts, volcano, snow, ocean, small towns, etc.
- the races are heavily fantasy-based with the exception of Mecha
- the story is based around a war between most of the races and Nature, which is sentient and has decided that the artifice has to stop before it gets out of hand. Many intelligent races are divided on either side of this issue, with the player races possessing some pretty hefty technology for the rural setting, while other races are for various reasons against technological development.
- There are occasional hints of more modern and futuristic influences. A large warehouse or two as dungeons, electricity, and something akin to a more intelligent Pokedex are all present.

Any and all ideas are appreciated. Okay, any and all honest ideas are appreciated. This is by far my biggest and longest-running project and I've put years of effort into it already. I'd like to give it something that does it justice.

Ok, it's lazy work and might not be what you're aiming at, but i thought it would be a decent enough start

Moon: Echoes of the Past

I like the idea of just running with calling it Moon, because I can't recall any game that's just named Moon. Echoes of the Past would refer to the semi-futuristic elements of the setting, and arguably the whole nature vs technology theme. Reason being, I'm assuming if it's a fantasy setting with futuristic aspects, it could be argued that this isn't the first time it's happened. I could be wrong, but I don't have a lot more to go off of.

Luune Eclipse.

People's Eyes will tend to correct the name automatically and you get away with a game that can be just about anything you want it to be with a lunar theme.

You can always use "Selene". Bonus points if the game has an important female character. Also, it fits as a name for characters, maybe the town, continent, planet or whatever you want.

Maybe Ecliptic Apocalypse? Not really sure of the severity of the nature vs. people war, but I imagine it would be rather disastrous.

I like NonCon's suggestion as well.

I actually like "The World That Is" and don't have any name suggestions to add.

Wow! I really appreciate all the support! I was expecting this thread to be slow.

Actually, many good ideas from that. I'm making a list and a few are up at the top.

Actually, you're partly right about the story. The way things went was technology started cropping up and Nature lashed out. For understandable reasons, mind you. The Mecha race was actually created artificially to emulate another race, the Armora, who figure heavily into Ruby (another project) and are playable there. Armora are empty armors given life via Nature's magic, so when people began creating similar constructs and even trying to emulate the magical aspect, it was the straw that broke the camel's back. There were, in fact, scientific facilities, which were attacked and subsequently abandoned, and which were responsible for creating actually more than one race. There was also the loss of another sentient race along the way, the Titans, who are also playable in Ruby and for which the monetary system and certain equipment is named in their honor in Battle (although I haven't worked out exactly what happened quite yet).

Basically, people were validly fucking shit up and messing with stuff. Things have been relatively quiet for some years, though.

I guess "war" indicates a stronger conflict than there really is. It's kind of a prolonged oppositional conflict, not really "cold," but not really "hot," either, since there is activity.

Also, because it's the same world as Ruby, the name also fits the Ruby series' naming scheme and would work nicely.

Mr Moon's Moonalicious Moonventure!

Lunar Star Story: Secret of Mana Fantasy

These are the best two suggestions.

You should combine them somehow. Like Mr. Moon's Moonalicious Moon Story: Secret of Mana Moonventures, or something.
