Personally, I want the opposite; crop Spike down and pass him on to me as an avvy. This one, cool as it is, is a bit hard to read.

In my opinion, Rarity and Fluttershy are probably my favorite ponies, since I can relate well to both of them; as mentioned before, Rarity personifies a lot of issues related to art and artists, and Fluttershy is pretty much spot on how I tend to act around crowds in real life.

My favorite moment in that song is just after Sweetie starts, when Fluttershy frantically waves her hoof in a desperate attempt to convince Sweetie to tone it down. So adorable.

I'm going to stand by my position that the music could be a bit more in tune but for a children's cartoon wherein the character are being voice-acted by people I presume aren't vocalists, it's not that bad. e: I just remembered that it turns out they actually have different voice actors for singing.

Evil Enchantress is still amazingly bad though. (It adds to the effect of the song, to me.)

That's true in every case but Fluttershy's. Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie have the same VA, but that VA sings only Fluttershy's part, which is why her segments in songs tend to be short. (For example, in "Winter Wrap-Up" Rainbow Dash sings an entire segment for "Weather Team" and Applejack sings an entire segment for "Planting Team," but Fluttershy splits her "Animal Team" segment among multiple other ponies as singers.)

Generally, all this is done because talented voice actors usually have a lot of parts to read for a lot of characters, and singing is the single activity that takes the most out of a voice. (As for why no singer could replicate Fluttershy's voice, I have no idea.) But, for example, Pinkie Pie sings so damn much that another VA to handle the singing was an absolute necessity.

So I guess I'm not the best advocate for any show, but in having no shame I've just been around watching MLP: FiM publicly, singing songs from the show, talked about it to my friends and voilá; they are joining the herd one at a time.

Funny you should mention that Flare, I just watched that film for the first time today. It was ok, but it was let down by the lack of ponies. And as Oster just proved, everything is better with ponies, even pop music. For the record I HATE pop music, but that actually worked really well.

Nah, she isn't; she's my least favorite pony but saying she's "my least favorite pony" is like saying that Raphael is my "least favorite ninja turtle;" while technically accurate, I still love even the "worst" character from those two shows considerably more than most other characters on other shows. Admittingly I was close to feeling more ambivalent about Rarity in light of "Sonic Rainboom", but she redeemed herself sufficiently with "A Dog and Pony Show" for me to feel comfortable liking her again.

The Sonic Rainboom thing actually is one of the things that bugs me with the show. It does that thing where they introduce/hyperexcentuate a character flaw for one episode, that wasn't really there before. It makes all the ponies have an episode where they just look bad.

But I mean, every pony has an episode that skews their strengths and weaknesses a bit negatively, and every pony has an episode that skews their strengths and weaknesses a bit positively. Insofar as their respective strengths and weaknesses remain constant, this really isn't a problem for me at all. It's just good writing.

Think about it this way: You're a genuinely good person, I imagine. But you still have bad days where your weaknesses really overshadow your strengths, or where you're given something that initially seems like a gift and you let your newfound power or position go to your head. Same with me: I'm generally a good guy but anyone who's been on NPF lately knows I have my share of bad days, days where my weaknesses really come out to the forefront.

I like that about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I like the fact that Rarity's characterization appears consistent to me despite the fact that she's arrogant and prissy and fairly self-centered in one episode, and in the next she's cultured and generous while the other ponies are demanding and insensitive. Rarity's characterization remained the same, but in surroundings where she was more familiar (crafting clothing, for example) she was comfortable and her strengths shone, whereas in unfamiliar settings and in moments of sudden recognition in a field that did not match her specialty, her weaknesses seized her and she enjoyed herself a bit too much.

For a children's cartoon, as you noted, I actually think it's been doing far better than most.

Well, my real point is that, as much as mainstream culture underestimates children, appreciating and reading subtle characterization is actually one of the things that a bit more sociocultural experience and Friendship is Magic has probably struck a better balance than, say, I would.

It's just one of those things where now my hopes are all up and it's harder to keep perspective.

I can forgive her for going a bit nuts in Sonic Rainboom. Again, those were dangerously fabulous wings.

I actually think it's a very interesting thing: she only got those wings for the sole purpose of getting to Cloudsdale to help Rainbow Dash. Interesting that the character who most understood Rainbow's predicament and most wanted to help her (see: recognizing stage fright, suggesting the spell, being the test subject) ended up forgetting her initial reason for becoming so fabulous in the first place.

One thing I really like about Rarity is that she has amazingly good qualities (everything she did in Suited For Success), and when she screws up or lets her ego get the best of her, she realizes this much faster than a character in another show might. Well, not so much in Look Before You Sleep, but in Green Isn't Your Color, she realized that she was being unreasonably jealous and felt ashamed for being so shallow, even as it was happening. In a lesser show, a similar character probably wouldn't have been that self-conscious until the end of the episode. Rarity may be shallow sometimes, but she is actually a very kind and mature character.

That's one of the things that make Rarity one of my favorites. She's just a really good person, all things considered. And she's skilled enough at what she does to justify a certain level of preening.

I've actually taken the 'personal pony episodes' to be more from the specific pony's point of view; and thats why in sonic rainbooms we see Dash being pretty unsure of herself and the other ponies hardly noticing [except fluttershy but fluttershy's awesome] and Rarity seems thrice as bad as normal, because Rainbow Dash is exaggerating it.

Besides, Rarity and Kanaya have too many interests in common. Kanaya needs to spend time with someone fundamentally different than her, someone who could teach her to giggle at nasty wizards and clowns to make them disappear, and someone to teach her to let loose a little and just have fun the next time she happens to cross paths with any beautiful blonde seers.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to write an epic 500 page fanfiction in which Solid Snake, Pinkie Pie and Kanaya join forces to unite against a Triumvirate of Evil, a sinister Axis composed of Liquid, Nightmare Moon and Eridan. The three heroes will initially hate each other, but then as they realize how amazingly awesome in their respective fields each is, a grudging respect will form among them.

At one point Snake will break down and be like "I have feelings for Meryl and Otacon but could never confess it before due to my artificial need to adhere to my badass, stoic masculine persona that cannot depend on anyone! Like to be frank you can insult Kanaya, Solid Snake (the character, not me), Pinkie Pie, or whatever and that's like fine with me, you'd never see me do one of my classic overreactions to someone saying "Pinkie Pie is my least favorite pony and she is totally a jerk." I'd probably respond in a defense of Pinkie Pie and I might act offended but at no point would I actually interpret it as a personal slight: saying "Pinkie Pie is awful" is something I'd disagree with, and something I'd take poorly, but instead I'd just make some "Nah dude you's gots poor taste, Pinkie Pie is rad" response and we'd move on.

And I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me on Rarity or defending her, in fact my comments about Rarity are often geared towards playfully tickling the sensibilities of those who like Rarity lots, that's not what this is about.

There's just a fundamental difference between all that criticism levied at characters, or even levied at peoples' opinions of characters, and saying "You need help" -- that's a serious statement questioning the psychological health of a person.

And even then I kind of laughed it off and assumed it was a joke the first time or two that someone threw out the "You need help" spiel, but then several others kind of jumped on that bandwagon and it started to feel less like a good-natured ribbing and more like a mean-spirited beatdown.

EDIT: Nah PCD like that's actually a perfect example of the kind of ribbing I actually find completely legitimate. I have no problem exchanging barbs with someone who dislikes Pinkie, or exchanging barbs with someone who loves Rarity, because the ribbing centers on insults directed towards fictional characters, and we just assign different weight and value to the characters and enjoy getting each other riled up over whether we like or dislike them.

I think what needs to happen is there needs to be an episode where, say, Rainbow Dash makes fun of Rarity for being all girly-girly and getting manicures and not pumping iron, and near the end Rarity stops just letting it go and's all like, "Well, Rainbow Dash, I guess you just can't be friends with someone so girly-girly; is that it?" and then Rainbow Dash is all like, "What? No, dude, I make fun of you because you're my friend. If it really bothers you so much, I guess I can stop." Then they pony hug and learn a valuable lesson about friendship.

And then Snake ignores said lesson because it was a Rarity episode and I'm so sorry I didn't intend to end this post like that it was just too perfect.

See this is what I'm talking about.

I mean, first of all, 'serious' and 'cosplayer' should never be in the same sentence together. Ever. Not for My Little Pony, not for Homestuck, not for Cowboy Bebop, or any other thing someone might cosplay for. Same goes for fan art and fan fiction. They are inherently non-serious subjects, because they are done by fans of a thing as an attempt to have fun with other fans of a thing.

I say this as a person who has gone to anime conventions in full costume, who dated for years a girl who drew fanart (sometimes quite 'seriously'), and was heavy into fandom for various things (the weirdest of which being ball-jointed dolls). Never would I use the word 'serious' to describe, and neither would she--because it wasn't serious. It was a hobby, a thing of fun. No more 'serious' than beating the newest Final Fantasy game.

BUT I'm going to assume by 'serious' you simply meant 'high-quality', and that I don't have to go into a big thing about how taking fandoms 'seriously' is unhealthy to both groups and individuals, and instead will focus on this:

I think what needs to happen is there needs to be an episode where, say, Rainbow Dash makes fun of Rarity for being all girly-girly and getting manicures and not pumping iron, and near the end Rarity stops just letting it go and's all like, "Well, Rainbow Dash, I guess you just can't be friends with someone so girly-girly; is that it?" and then Rainbow Dash is all like, "What? No, dude, I make fun of you because you're my friend. If it really bothers you so much, I guess I can stop." Then they pony hug and learn a valuable lesson about friendship.

And then Snake ignores said lesson because it was a Rarity episode and I'm so sorry I didn't intend to end this post like that it was just too perfect.
