For Friday they'll also be airing two movies (I can't remember which) and the entire first season. And finally, Saturday night might see the return of Robot Night, wherein we watch several mecha-based anime (Off the top of my head: Gundam X, Gravioli, and Big O) and finish off with Megas XLR. Two episodes each. 'course, I say "might" return because for the past 2-3 weeks we've skipped it due to not having time and because the streamer who runs it wasn't available.

Just in case you were looking for an excuse to not get any sleep this weekend.

Okay so, last night there were some issues early on with getting into the chat rooms at Bronystate. It seems like they fixed it by just direct linking to the various sub-rooms at the bottom of the page.

FOR REFERENCE: Once you go to the website right here (http://www.bronystate.net/theatre/), there'll be six images, one for each of the mane six. Ignore those, and pick your sub-room by clicking one of the six names at the bottom of the screen instead. You did see that bit with 9.23.11 at the end, right? That means it'll happen on the 23rd of this month.

Of course, given the rest of the Death Battle movies, I figure RD is doomed. I mean, Starscream is a hugging robotic jet. The fight will be interesting, but since they try to justify the winners, based on the stats they generate, I don't see it going any other way.

Then again, those G1 Transformers couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, so RD has him beat in cordination.

Latest episode was solid but I kept getting a distinct impression that it was written for Bronies / older fans more than young girls, and that's a little problematic for me.
I mean, the nuclear rainboom, Fluttershy snapping the neck of a bear, and the entire town beating each other up for a doll constitutes somewhat more violent imagery than I feel appropriate with.
And Twilight was written a bit too zany for her characterization, in my opinion. I get that she's flawed and should have occasional meltdowns, but she never went quite this far in S1, and as a usual 'voice of reason' / 'straight pony' character on the show, it all felt out of line for her.

I doubt it, if only because the mane cast drives my love for the series and I think the emphasis on Luna here will detract somewhat from their participation in the storyline.

Mind you, it'll probably be a very good episode, but in the end, FiM isn't really about Luna, so this is like an episode of the Simpsons that concentrates on a secondary character like Moe or Abu instead of the Simpsons family. Even if the episode is great, it's not a gold standard we'd rely upon to introduce others to the show or the one show that best emulates what FiM is all about.

As far as I understand it, this one is about Luna getting back into the social scene and trying to rebuild her image in the eyes of the public, and the ponies help her with that. It's literally an episode about FRIENDSHIP!, rather than some other problem which only teaches them about friendship at the end of the ep. At halloween. And Pinkie dresses as a chicken and Spike as a dragon and hilarity will no doubt ensue.

So I watched the series in its entirety. Still not really feelin it, but I like the way it treats its characters. They get a lot of points for making Rarity a genuinely good person who just happens to be into fashion and culture, and is a bit vain, instead of making her either a bitch or a buttmonkey.

I think it follows eighties toon templates to the point of it becoming detrimental, especially when gets to overselling its morals. I could have done without Twilight's episodely letter home. I also find myself skipping bits because I've seen them several million times in older shows. Yes I do feel this is all being done on purpose, but that doesn't really help in this case, although I'm sure others will disagree.

Overall though, it's a pretty good show, and there's definitely a lot of good things to say about it. It certainly takes a lot of those eighties toon templates and polishes them up a lot. It'd just be nice if it actually played with them a bit. Maybe the second season will get a bit experimental with its structure.

To me it seems more obvious that episodes are setting up a moral lessons at the end. Obviously that was always the case, but in Season 1 it was more like the lessons just popped out, barring a few exceptions.

Season 2 has been far less impressive for me in general. I did like this episode (as well as Sisterhooves because man my sister and I have BEEN there), but I feel like there's some Flanderization of the characters going on, and like IHMN said, the lessons are feeling more... obvious? It feels like some of that magic spark has faded. Only some, though!

Well, yeah, Blueblood was there, but he and Rarity did not communicate, and Rarity was far more interested in establishing friendships with tthe others (including that new British guy unicorn character whose name I've forgotten but who was pretty awesome.)

It's like, if you have a crush on someone in your social circle and that person rejects you, the solution isn't to stop associating with that person and anyone who knows both of you. Rarity makes new friends in Canterlot, and Canterlot happens to be where Blueblood lives. It'd be much worse if Rarity was still crushin' on Blueblood and that was her sole reason to ignore Twilight's birthday and try to have a bitchin' good time at Canterlot, but it's apparent that's not the case.

My major complaint with Season Two is that the episodes have been uneven in terms the time we've spent with characters. Rarity and Rainbow Dash have been dominating lately, and even Twilight Sparkle has increasingly taken a back seat. While Twilight was never my favorite character, I feel recent episodes have shown why it's really best that she was the main character; as a 'straight-and-narrow' type she kept the show from digressing off into various tangents and extremes. Rainbow Dash, like Solid Snake, is a character you appreciate more the less you see of her. And many of Rarity's flaws are very tolerable in small doses but become exponentially more annoying when the rest of the cast seems to marginalized for her benefit.

Mind you, I'd be making the same complaints if Season Two had been "the Pinkie Pie Show;" too much Pinkie would definitely have a similar effect of over-saturation; she's at her best when she has a few grand moments but mostly contributes with a few zingers from the sidelines. ("Dragonshy," a Fluttershy-centric episode, and "Green Isn't Your Color," a Fluttershy / Rarity / Twilight ensemble episode, actually contain my favorite Pinkie moments.)

So yeah, I'd like to see more Twilight, more Spike, more Fluttershy, more Pinkie Pie, and more Applejack. Rarity, in particular, needs to take a bit of a breather; many of her S2 episodes seem to rehash the exact same themes about her and it's reaching a point where you just want one of the other ponies to remind her of the lesson she learned just last week.

I gotta say, as someone who's never been a huge fan of the way sitcoms and cartoons usually handle romantic tension and unrequited crushes, I was really, really pleasantly surprised with that latest episode.

(The last few episodes have also led me to appreciate Rarity much more than I used to, though I really hope Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy have a few of their own episodes soon because they've been overlooked.)

I'd rank May the Best Pet Win higher, but otherwise I agree with this sentiment. It's just, looking back on some of the episodes we've gotten in season two, it almost feels like a different show at this point.

Also, season two is home to the only episode of the show I can actually say I hate. That's not hyperbole, I actually found one of the episodes to be so terrible in its execution, especially given how promising the synopsis was, that I can't bring myself to watch it again.

The Mysterious Mare Do Well.

EDIT: To elaborate, I found the whole concept to be decent, but it felt like every step of the way was plagued by awful writing. Twilight, Applejack, Rarity, and even Fluttershy came off as uncharacteristically douchey, the writer seemed to completely miss the point of Dash's bragging and wrote her as an impossibly egotistical narcissist, and Pinkie was just... stupid. The lesson the mane six gave at the end and the way it was given also struck me as poorly done. Dash never actually learned the lesson herself, she needed it told to her after she nearly assaulted Pinkie Pie in that final confrontation. The mane six certainly didn't come off as humble to me, what with their bragging to Dash's face about how great they were as Mare Do Well or the bit where they actually went and attended a parade being held in their honor. And Dash, despite the bit where her friends didn't even bother trying to talk her down from the start implying that she wouldn't listen to reason, ended up... listening to reason and being talked down in the end. It made the whole episode seem pointless—if they could just talk her down and get her to listen to reason, why go through the whole farce? And why did Dash just up and accept the whole situation so readily after they'd screwed with her emotions the whole way through?

I'm tempted to link to a fanfic I wrote in response to the episode, but given how I felt about it I wouldn't be surprised if it seemed like I was just being pathetic for writing it.

EDIT EDIT: To elaborate on that... were I to give a summary of the fic's events, it'd definitely sound like nothing more than a fix fic. I hate those on principle, so having written what may very well be one doesn't sit all that well with me no matter how proud I am of how well the fic itself may have turned out.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: And now a synopsis for Episode 16 has come out. It'sanother Dash episode. I... I'm starting to get the feeling that the writers haven't a bloody clue what to do with her anymore. May the Best Pet Win focused on Dash's sudden desire for a pet, TMMDW focused on her sudden (self-)obsession with heroics, and now there's this.

Dash gets serious injured and is stuck in the hospital, where she suddenly discovers the joy of reading.

Did they just burn all their notes on her when Faust quit or something? And on top of this, they're seriously going with that angle? It's one of the biggest cliches in the fandom.
