I think her voice was a bit too... I dunno. Maybe a bit too spacey.
Also, I like to imagine that her real name is Ditzy, and Derpy is something of a nickname. Because this would make her the same as the one who messed up the Southern Birds thing, implying that Rainbow Dash is something of a long-suffering acquaintance of hers.
And of course cherrychangas are more important. They sound delicious.

Nah, her real name is Derpy. Ditzy is the one with the purple mane. Plus everyplace else is discussing nothing but Derps speaking.
Anyway, back to the rest of the episode.
Nice touch that they didn't have Pinkie and Rarity suddonly appear.

The Big Mac x Cheerilee episode would have been ten times more interesting if we actually got some insight into Cheerliee or Big Mac, though.
...Instead, the episode was dominated by the three personalities who weren't even the centerpiece of the presumed love story, which was unfortunate because I'd prefer giving Big Mac and Cheerilee the screentime as opposed to letting the CMC hoard it
...This episode was so amazing I'm willing to overlook all faults, though.
Objectively speaking, and my Pinkie Pie fanboyism aside, it wasn't the best Season Two episode, but it was damned close.

........
...Heh.
There have been episodes of MLP: FiM before that I've considered 'mediocre' or 'average' in quality, but I have to say today's new episode was the first I ever thought was just bad. Like, just poorly written, poorly executed, poorly imagined.
...Maybe I'm being a bit harsh because this episode had the misfortune of coming right after one of the series' best ("Smile" will forever have a permanent slot in my iPod), but man, everything about this episode just seemed rather off. The two most glaring issues for me were:
1: Angel essentially abusing Fluttershy like a husband would abuse a wife, going so far as to physically strike her, and never truly receiving a comeuppance for his behavior (the moral of the story is "Make him appreciate the food you do cook for him," not "Leave his sorry ass;" imagine that moral applied in the context of human male/female relationships...
2: Rarity suggesting to Fluttershy that "being assertive" is flirting. That whole sequence was offensive to women (to get what you want, sell your sex appeal!) and to nerds (they're so hideous and socially awkward they'll bend over backwards the moment you say anything nice to them!)
While Rarity's had moments like that before, it's usually been in the context of her learning a lesson about her poor behavior, and/or in the context of her friendship with Spike, which is written quite well. Here it was just off-putting, particularly since the lesson is presented positively to Fluttershy, like, "Here is what (other) women should do."
...Yeah, just a weird episode. It's not anything I'd stop watching the show over, as overall MLP's had far too many great memories and progressive morals and fun characters to let this outweigh that, but this is an episode I don't foresee myself watching again.
Locke cole
03-03-2012, 05:25 PM
There was the fact that, when it came down to it at the end, flirting and trickery failed where actual assertiveness (while remaining polite) worked.

I rather have Whority and Flutterslut than another fucking CMC episode. I think you are looking at the Fluttershy/Angel relationship from the wrong angle; that scene is suppose to evoke a maternal vibe. Angel is acting like a petty child who always gets his way because the mother is far too preoccupied with being nice to him. The point is that Fluttershy's insistence on trying to please him is misguiding him too, breaking their familiar structure.
I will admit that Rarity using sex appeal to further pursue her own interests is not a good lesson for the kids, but I can forgive that instance because it was played for the lulz. This episode was easily one of my favourites this season because of the way it played with Fluttershy's archetype and putting her into the entire opposite. Actually, the best MLP episodes are those that do exactly that with each pony.

Also nice to see the Spike X Rarity undertones played even more. The little guy deserves some love.
I was kind of torn between believing that Rarity's constant use of baby-talk around Spike and her overt friendliness was a conscious attempt to friend-zone him and convey that message across while still maintaining their current platonic relationship, or believing that Rarity's progression from someone who basically ignored Spike and used him as a pincushion in earlier Season One episodes to the pony that cared about him most (more than Twilight!) and who was visibly irate beyond comprehension when Spike was threatened was not only great character development in a kid's show, but also a subtle way to incorporate romantic undertones.
Actually it's probably a testament to the show's quality that it's managed to perfectly balance those two possibilities, so fans of shipping the couple can continue to ship the couple in bliss, while those who dislike the logical implications of Rarity being attracted to a 'baby dragon' can continue to cite evidence as to why it isn't. Andrew Hussie and the MLP: FiM writers seem to share that skill of walking that fine line to please everyone.

For me it wasn't so much "Big Mac speaking a full sentence" (because he's said plenty) but rather the fact that Applejack said "Yup" and "Nope" while Big Mac went into a moralistic diatribe of not wanting to speak to his younger sister that honestly seemed sort of out-of-character for him.
I mean Big Mac didn't seem nearly as upset about being forcibly brainwashed into loving Cheerilee and nearly marrying her and that was kind of more personally significant than just being the subject of a trashy news story

I think the (speaking) role reversal between Applejack and Big Mac was to highlight exactly how bad the trio had screwed up. The key difference between this and the hearts and hooves day thing was that with that they at least meant well. Not so much here.

only other time we saw him really talking, was lecturing his little sister. He is doing the same, but instead of trying to advice Applejack he is scolding Apple Bloom.
And to be fair he didn't remember the brainwashing. Kind of hard to be upset about something you dont remember. Plus, though it was them joking it wouldn't surprise me if him and Cheerilee did hook up after that.

She had no opportunity, though.
She would have had no escape route if she'd gone in during the first two chases, I doubt she coordinated with Rarity for the blackout (they all seemed to work alone), and asleep though she was, Pinkie would have woken up if she'd gone in later, as she would have had to open the doors to get in.
also: what's this about her not living up to her element? Hell, the entirety of The Last Roundup was her getting completely broken over not being able to fulfill a promise.

My reactions:
First third of epi one: Average episode
Most of the last 2/3 of epi one: Man, Cadence is a royal bitch...
Finalie of epi one: Shit just got real son.
Start of Epi two: TWILIGHT SHOOTS LASERS
About halfway through epi 2: Shit is about as real as it gets... and Pinkie Pie has a Party Cannon Attack. It's like a good Micheal Bay movie.
Last part: great song, Vinyl finally showed up, and possable Derps sighting.
Overall? First half was good build up. Second half... man... I'm still trying to find the words.

It didn't help that BBBFF appeared for no reason to replace actual speech, which is always terrible. Normal conversation to song to normal conversation with no scene changes is just annoying.

I didn't like it because all of a sudden Twilight has a brother she loves more than anybody that she never mentioned.
I wasn't a fan of BBBFF either--and, to be honest, This Day was only a little better, if you ask me. However, I do give huge props to Ingram for being very clever about it (http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/04/day-arias-hidden-meaning.html).

Maybe it was the visuals that made me really like This Day? I don't know. Something about it I felt really did well at portraying extreme malice on one end of it (Chrysalis's second verse in particular), and lots of desperation on the other side.
The fact that all of it was apparently the same singer is a nice touch.

No emotion? What song were you listening to?
I could understand if you thought it was generic, or out-of-place, or whatever, but a lack of emotion is the last complaint I would have thought would be aimed at it. It being highly emotional is the main reason I like it so much.
I mean, I can respect your opinion on the songs, but to be perfectly honest, I'm just baffled.

It all sounded very much flat-toned. While there may have been a level of emotion from both of the characters, it didn't shine through because the entire song was sort of on one flat plane. It doesn't have any sort of variance to catch your attention, which I can't get into. It's very much just straight up, here's a slab, look at it, rather than enveloping you into what it's doing.
Maybe lack of emotion was the wrong phrase, but it doesn't draw you in, it just sits you down in front of it, at an arm's length away.

Twilight was relevant in the first half. It was her brother's wedding and she was the only one who noticed something wrong with the bride. In the second half she was captured by the big bad and aided the real Cadance's escape. But then the plot was resolved by the side characters without any influence from Twilight so a lot of that got diminished. Though the other five main ponies did nothing through the episodes besides fail to get the elements.

Irredeemable.
Fortunately, I'd much rather have lost the stein than anything else. I can repurchase the exact same stein for another $15 if I really want to (though I probably won't.) Losing the Tara Strong-signed badass Twilight Sparkle-as-Solid-Snake t-shirt would have been a far greater tragedy.
WALLS O' TEXT
The rest of the Con was pretty fun, though.
The second day was better than the first. It wasn't perfect; there were some issues, particularly since it's only their second year. Haphazard planning, technical glitches, poor sound equipment, and a fire broke out! (Though that last part was just foul luck.)
Where Bronycon's really struggling is thematically; I understand the desire to paint a strong narrative to justify the show's popularity and the very existence of the fandom, but it's being taken to unnecessary and frankly self-absorbed extremes. When even I grow a bit tired of the constant self-instilled praise and adulation, you know it's taken a turn beyond melodramatic.
Still, there were a lot of great people at the con, including and especially Lauren Faust, who was adorable, insightful and sincere throughout, and who's quite possibly the only major player whose genuine appreciation I never questioned. It's too bad I missed most of her speeches (only just now watched them online), but I did spend a brief minute chatting with her and I got her autograph. (She complimented the Pinkie you made for me, Bobbie! And signed it!)
...As someone who's never been a fan of any of her prior work -- I barely even knew the Powerpuff Girls existed -- I wasn't even planning on paying for her autograph, but I'm glad I did, it was the highlight of the trip.
...That and spending time with Rob, of course. Rob is still all kinds of aces.
I got Andrea Libman and Tara Strong's autographs, too. I expected meeting Andrea to be the highlight of the trip but made the critical mistake of gunning for her first, which was disastrous as I had no mental script planned out of things to say. I completely blanked out under the pressure and looked extremely nervous. Andrea was polite, though I'm sure she thought I was a tad kooky. She was quiet and appeared bored throughout intermittent spurts of the convention, which actually increased my respect for her in a roundabout way, as that indirect 'honesty' seemed to give her comparatively few qualified positive statements more weight.
...Tara, on the other hand, is a brilliantly skilled actress, even when interacting as 'herself' with the bronies. This made interacting with her quite easy and superficially pleasant, and she was a riot in every panel she participated in. Hard to tell how much of it was real and genuine, though, and how much is just her extroversion working to her advantage in enabling her to pull the right strings.
Rob and I didn't collect autographs or personally 'meet' any of the others present, but I did walk away with some impressions. Celestia and Spike's VAs were both superb, probably the highlights of the VA panels objectively -- more talkative and insightful than Andrea, less PR fluff and shenanigans than Tara. John de Lancie's speech was probably the lowlight of the convention for me; he pushed the "Bronies are special!" bullshit the most of the big names, in a way I personally found less endearing and more obnoxious and exploitative. The writers present were accessible and fun, but the convention charged too much for their autographs, which usually left them sitting alone at vacant tables.
As for the bronies...uugghhh.
Without getting too mired in specific details, I'll just say that the convention really left me with two distinct impressions that tugged in two different directions: It reaffirmed my love for Friendship is Magic as a television show, but lessened my enthusiasm for bronies as a 'distinct community' of fans.
Individual bronies are still awesome; there's some insane levels of creative talent present, and most of the people I met were friendly and likable. But there's a lot of rotten eggs in the batch, and the community's artificial aura of self-importance and 'specialness' really prevents the warts from being adequately addressed.
