View Full Version : Anyone Been Keeping Up With The Newer Mortal Kombat Movie Thing?
'Kay, number one, theme song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAwWPadFsOA). Yes. B, there was this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd4HAtUEdAw) released for this Mortal Kombat thing last year. Apparently there's some series out there:
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 1 - Sonya, Jax, Kano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s6UiEuCYXA&feature=relmfu)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 2 - Sonya, Jax, Kano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTSEa--Alkw&feature=relmfu)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 3 - Johnny Cage, Shang Tsung (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqlaU5OMsks)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 4 - Kitana, Mileena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIFbGNqs0JQ)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 5 - Kitana, Mileena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4QRSbf9H5M)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 6 - Raiden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tWh4Z42SJk)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 7 - Sub-Zero, Scorpion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5Wnc8OyUj0&feature=showob)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 8 - Sub Zero, Scorpion, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQv-kYsclSM&feature=showob)
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Part 9 - Cyrax, Sektor, Kano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OwDyWfjb48)
So... same actors, one's just called "Rebirth" and the other is "Legacy." Anyone have any info?

Full Story:
Director accidently made available the trailer that rebooted the MK series to Warner Bros.
It EXPLODED.
Warner Bros grants a 9 webisode series which allows Jeri Ryan to play Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage to be expanded upon, etc.
The "magic" in the series is diagnosed with a ton of reality. Less fireballs and voodoo, more gritty realism. So Baraka is just a crazed doctor, not an outworlder. Katana is probably an assassin's daughter, and Scorpion is still a killer for hire, just not dead yet.
All of this leads into the movie. If it looks THIS good, I'm paying for it. PERIOD.

I remember seeing the original trailer ages ago, thought it looked pretty cool. Completely different from what MK is normally what with no magic and all but it still looked better than the last movie at least. Didn't know they'd actually started work on the series until now. I quite like it to be honest. It's an interesting take on the MK universe and it gives the characters some actual personality for once.
Of course it looks like they've thrown the magic back in at the end of ep 3, which would indicate there's more going on than has been seen so far, which offers a lot of potential for the future.
I'd be interested in seeing where they take this next.

Why fuck around for 2 episodes with some shitty cop showl? If I have to watch like 20 episodes before you get to Mortal Kombat why would I bother watching?
Like if they actually make it about Mortal Kombat then maybe I'll check those episodes out but I se eno reason to care about the episodes as they are now.

Well, Jax is pretty brutal for a cop. He punched Kano's eye out so that he needs to wear the masks he was selling.
Then we're going to get into all of the other characters. Quite frankly, they really are boring in the normal universe, with all of this leading up to the movie. Mainly, this is showing the characters so you get a feel for the world and its grittiness. And quite franklky it's a pretty crapsack world if Baraka is a mass murdering doctor who mutilated himself.

Hey, Helo is playing Stryker! Good enough reason to watch, I suppose.
BTW Smarty I have only watched the first webisode and I can safely say this seems like much more than a cop show? They raid a robot factory Kano is running and his flunkies attack with energy weapons, it seems fairly science fiction-y.
Striker?

Well, episode 4 is now out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIFbGNqs0JQ) and you can kiss goodbye to it being a "normal" real world cop show/sci fi series. Full blown fantasy elements are now back in place.
This one also basically throws the original Rebirth trailer out the window and starts over from scratch too.

Well, I'm confused as all hell. First they were following a "real world" story, then they're going back to the first two games. But this ep was boring to say the least. It was nothing more than backstory and I could read the 2nd game for that.

The only thing I really saw in the original that I was digging was the focus on Scorpion as the protagonist instead of say, Liu Kang. Plus GRITTY REALISM but it still seemed to kind of have that, even with the magic, robots, lasers...

Bearing in mind that these 12 episodes are only supposed to be the prequel to the actual film they're doing. So really all this right now is just background building for the characters and the world, to save having to exposition everyone and everything during the full movie.
Magus
05-05-2011, 07:28 PM
Doesn't making 12 webisodes that add up to the length of a full-length film and provides all the exposition the film probably should have...a better idea than a confusing film with no exposition? It's an odd strategy. These webisodes are going to have a fraction of a fraction of the amount of viewership an actual film in theaters would have.

I think it's making people want to see the movie more, actually.
You can look and see the webisodes and not have it distract from the movie. If the second MK movie taught us anything, there's a LOT of characters that need us to feel for them as they fight.

- minute-long recap at the start of the 9 minute second episode that only manages to highlight how padded with immemorable dialogue and Zack Snyder-slow motion the first one was

It is an understandable thing when you have one dream, one marketable trait, that they lead you on trying to market anything to be worth a damn, probably spending most of the savings you have just to see that dream is crushed and trait ignored to cast some eye candy that probably punches like a gentle breeze.
His life is over, on the flipside movie Cage was still a success, you can imagine why one might be a little more bitter.

See now I'm confused. The first bits were like in futureland where everyone had energy weapons, Johnny Cage was in a modern setting, and Raiden landed in a mental institution from like the 50s.
Also what was the point of that episode? We learn nothing about Raiden. It seems unlikely that it'll affect the plot later. It was just like a family guy joke " Remember the time that raiden got stuck in a mental institution?"

Seil your link to episode 6 is a link to episode 5.
EDIT; Ok, finally got around to seeing 5 and 6. 5... meh, Kitanna and Mileena Outworldy stuff is pretty boring any day of the week. 6 I quite liked though. Raiden is pretty awesome, and he's played by Henry from Sanctuary which is... an odd choice, but I think it strangely works. I don't think the lack of characterisation is neccesarily a bad thing for him either; he's a thunder god, he exists to kick arses and electrocute the fuck out of shit, what more do you need to know?
At least now we seem to be forming a coherent timeline of events, presumable Raiden got himself killed at the start of that episode trying to stop Shao Kahn from busting through into Earth, so now they need to get the tournament on the go in order to prevent an all out invasion, which I guess means the whole "win 10 straight tournaments to invade" policy is being left out for this series.
Still waiting on Sub Zero and Scorpion though, I'm guessing they're being brought in last.

I'd like to think, this is where Raiden finally intervened. IIRC, The first 9 tournaments, he more or less was on the sidelines. Now, he joined in directly to prevent this. So it does make sense that perhaps the Elder Gods cast him out since he wasn't living up to their expectations.
Face it, Raiden is Thor right now.

Remember SMB futurland was taking advantage of the scifi power of the Military having technology so advanced we can't tell people about it. The cops themselves seemed to have a close connection to the same DOD works in order to put them on equal level on a black market that stole them. So they have the advantage of being secret.
Johnny is more suitably modern, but it can be expected as he is a no name actor he shouldn't have such access.
As far as Raiden goes, while the US has done quite a bit of deinstitutionalization we haven't fully torn down all psychiatric hospitals and as such Raiden ending up in such a place isn't unusual, nor is keeping him there since he did seem the kind who may be a danger to himself and others if his beliefs were so delusional. The means by which they attempted to cure him did seem a bit much, but considering the series I am not surprised. I mean fucking ketamine as his general anesthetic? What is this a vet's office? And I think around they end they were delivering a very crude frontal lobotomy.
At any rate I'm sure they'll give us the reason behind him being sent down. Probably because you have to give up your godliness to be in the Mortal Kombat tournament and he is the protector of Earthrealm. And I figure the psyche ward gave him a better idea of how most of humanity is going to see his claim, and also that there are still people worth saving on this realm.

Hasn't Raiden's story always been that he incarnated himself as a mortal so that he could participate in Mortal Kombat? Maybe the descent from heaven is just a bit turbulent.
How the hell did that mental institution get the right to hold him? Like, do asylums just practice "finders keepers" or what? If so, they already broke that rule, 'cause the girl totally found him first.

No one does trepanation anymore, and mental hospitals can't just decide that someone is their prisoner. If anything, he'd have gotten his ass in jail for breaking into a mental hospital.

I imagine the place was fundamentally fucked and had a terrible filing system and so they just said, "Hey, fucker is in white. Obviously one of ours." After that it was probably easy for them to legitimize it by him screaming, "I am Lord Raiden! Protector of the Earth!"
Also that wasn't trepanation, that was a frontal lobotomy. The difference being in trepanation it doesn't matter where you put the hole as long as there is a hole in the head, the lobotomy was meant to create purposeful dementia in the frontal lobe in the hopes of radical personality changes. Though that bit isn't worth arguing about, that whole hospital was obviously fucked up.
Professor Smarmiarty

Nobody lobotomies since the 1960s. NObody holds a patient for 3 months who appeared out of nowhere. These places get inspected. And are not run by psycopaths.
ANd why would you bother? Your funding is based on patient numbers- you not going to get paid for a patietn you have no paperwork for and if you do declare him he going to be removed fromo your care.
Also him saying "I'm Lord Raiden" isn't enough to keep him. He would eed a full psychiatric assessment which would be done by an outside professional who going to rat you out.
And fucken lobotomies. Holy shit.
This isn't a mental institution. This is a deranged fiefdom run by a criminal mastermind, trying to commit as many outrageous crimes as he can get away with for the shits and giggles of it.
Then again, forties - fifties. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Mengele)

Like my biggest problem is the motivation of the director of the hospital. Does he just like toturing people? Casue if he wanted to help Raiden just call in some outside help. Patients in mental institute need regular contact with a psychiatrist- is there one on staff that the director is keeping quiet somehow? He would surely recommend bringing some specialists in. The only motivation for the director seems to be he is a sadist.
I'm giving this way too much thought.

Stepping back to Raiden for a second; The thing that really bugged me about his episode is that he didn't shoot even ONE goddamn lightning bolt. I mean, I know he's had to give up his godhood or whatever to participate in the mortal kombat but that's never stopped him from throwing lightning in the games. Then when he got hit with the tasers, I got excited because hey, maybe he needed a recharge or some bullshit. But nope, still no lightning.

I was a bit confused by this origin for Scorpion, I thought the ninjas were like modern day ninjas/Yakuza in the video game? Like I know Scorpion is immortal ghost guy but Sub Zero wasn't, they were supposed to be modern day ninja who were still active in the criminal underworld. Here though apparently both were transferred to the modern day via the cunning and sorcery of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung (I'm halfway convinced that dude hanging out with Quan Chi is Shang Tsung, just by the dint that otherwise I have no idea who that dude is other than Quan Chi's pointless lackey, and the fact that he's speaking English in feudal Japan).
Hope they retain the futuristic crap in the modern day, though (that would explain Sub-Zero since originally in this he looked like he had some kind of advanced breathing apparatus on his face and looked pretty old, so maybe that's what's keeping him alive, plus it would allow Scorpion to retain that futuristic harpoon thingy).
Counter Argument. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIf48-nOXgo&t=2m36s)
The argument is that arguing about fighting games are silly and story usually takes a backseat to the game play, which is punching dudes. And sometimes kicking them.
