Its a montage for a reason! Its going to be handled sorta like a time skip. Those who were already in the medium as of the montage can sorta choose where there characters are right now. Caoway could probably be at the first gate by now, as well as Tergum.

Item Ingredients: Ballpoint Penetrator && ON3 FOR TH3 L4W BOOKS
Description: an upgraded Ballpoint Penetrator. This one has two seperate ink wells, allowing Tergum to shoot both red and green ink. Like editors everywhere, the red ink knocks down the self esteem of anyone it hits (Assuming they're sapient enough to have it in the first place), leaving them more hesitant to attack.
Cost: Between 4-6.
(my initial idea for Tergum's "Rage" title was that his weapons could buff/debuff the enemies by affecting their emotions. If you think that's too game-breaky, I can change it.)

So during my easy class I've been working on my post in a notebook (because my laptop broke down a long time ago and is essentially no longer portable). Now I'm just converting my scribbles into typed form. In the mean time, have this:

I call them the Time Tuners. Yeah it's shitty I know, but I made it in like a minute once I finally figured out what I wanted Rez's time device to look like. So essentially you have a disc on top of an upside down metronome. The gear in the center is raised, and the little circles around the disc are tuning pegs (the circles sticking out are the part you turn and the ones inside the disc are the peg part). The small lines are Strings of Time.

Hiya, guys.

This was honestly meant to come a while ago, but now will have to do.

I don't think I ever made it clear how impressed I was by the creativity going into this RP. The story you people are crafting is, I think, something that goes beyond what most RPs manage to achieve. The character relation, the development, the descriptions. Not to mention the art. I really think it's remarkable. And honestly, I'm kinda regretting that I'm not a part of it anymore. And, if you'll believe it, I do still feel pretty terrible for quitting on you guys. I'm sorry.

Mind you, I'm not gonna rejoin. I'll stay in the shadows and do a bit of DM stuff with Bard. We've got quite a bit of stuff planned out so far, and I think things will most certainly be getting... interesting. >: ]

So why am I writing this? I guess... just to give something back. This is a great RP, with a fantastic playerbase and a story that's really shaping up nicely. I really hope you guys go far. Because you all rock.

And to answer your weeks old questions, yes you can play it without having played any of the previous ES games (I haven't played any of them except Oblivion before I played Skyrim, and I only played Oblivion for a few hours before never touching it again because I hated it). And yes it really is that amazing.

I think the disorganized clusterfuck stemmed from our rampant use of memos and interactions between past and future versions of our characters. I think the best way to deal with this is to only allow linear progression, with time shenanigans needing to be fully planned out in advance and approved. Also, as much as I was looking forward to playing a hero of time, I think that role should be in Bard's hands since his knowledge of future events will allow him to use time shenanigans to steer us in the right direction (much like how the myriad of Aradiabots kept the troll session on track).

These are all just suggestions, of course.

I think the use of the edupad really sort of fucked things up in that regard. If things were streamlined it would have been more straightforward and consistent.

Like, if I did decide to restart this or whatever then I'd basically say "No edupad" and bring everyone to the same position in time. No time shit on the memos either.

In regards to the time stuff, I think back when this started, the idea was not to railroad you guys. We had a plot thought out (several, actually), but one that still gave you guys a good amount of freedom. We'd work your shenanigans into the plot, while providing a bit of correction where needed. The same applied to Arc, but I can see how it would've been hard to do time hero stuff without a narrative structure.

But okay, if we're gonna reboot this, let's gather some feedback! What I'm hearing right now is 'more structure, less time shit', which should be doable. If we cut down on the number of players, that should probably also help.

In regards to the reboot, what would you guys favor? A completely new beginning? A scratched session? Something that breaks the homestuck plotline entirely? In any case, you could make new characters or reuse the old ones, though everything after the first few posts would probably start going in a different direction.

Even keeping it to just our present incarnations, you had tons of players interacting with only a select group of other players, resulting in lots of instanced story threads that didn't naturally mesh with each other. On top of this, each thread moved as quickly as the involved players could manage it, resulting in some players running into the game and alchemizing and fighting monsters while others (such as myself, regrettably) were still stuck just integrating into Sburb.

All this leads to a series of separate story threads that don't interact with each other at all until eventually they come together at some unspecified point in the future. Players have trouble keeping up with it all, both because of how all-over-the-place it is, and because the vast majority of the content doesn't involve a given player's character at all.

Basically, any fairly-faithfully translated template of Homestuck and SBurb just doesn't lend itself well to a RP. A more pragmatic approach is required to adapt the setting successfully, which yes, means more structure.

Like, chatlogs would probably be gone altogether in favor of more organic conversations. It's perhaps even plausible to just start it after everyone had entered the Game.

We could either reshuffle server players or have active characters take over the roles of inactive server players for any necessary chatlogs, and go from there. I'd be ok with this option, or simply doing some kind of "broken" scratch (refer to last post) to justify character fuckery and deaths to account for players that dropped out.

But we need some more structure since it just feels like that entering was the biggest kidney stone to pass, so big that I'm still not done with it yet. Maybe just allow for a time skip past that point, where the incomplete entrances are summarized and the prototypings listed out.

The idea is to basically get rid of memos and other such convos. Let the logs be more like back and forth convos like Loyal said.

Characters can be established equally well at any point in the timeline or even narrative - Sollux, for instance, was succinctly characterized in the far flung future long before he was even properly introduced (http://mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003615). The reasoning behind the lusii and prototyping and so forth are frankly superfluous even without considering that we as players have seen this song and dance before plenty of times in Homestuck proper.

Well, character interaction is pretty important in keeping an RP fun, that much is true. Just writing a closed storyline, by yourself, or with one or two partners (as Loyal pointed out), is boring, particularly when you're making your own challenges. And starting the RP at a point where there's a lot of interaction already (i.e. all trolls are cooperating. You were nearly here, by the way.) might be a good strategy.

The pre-session stuff is fun, and it can be important for establishing characters' histories.

The way I see it, what's problematic is that, as far as I can tell, some of us want to try new characters, some of us want to try old characters. The old characters have already had their pre-session experiences, their characterization and everything. The new characters lack that, though they can probably catch up on that in the early bits of the RP.

If we did start the RP in medias res, I'd start with a standard introduction for every character, as well as a short summary of their activities and conversations prior to the starting point. That point would probably be not too long after entering. You can refer to past conversations and events and such, but no flashing back, and the summary should contain everything important. That'll probably be a good balance between characterization and, well, action, as well as allowing for both the import of old characters and the creation of new ones. Would people be cool with that?

In regards to sticking to patterns, I'm not sure. It depends on your personal preferences, really. If you think amphibians are cool and fitting, sure! If you want spiders instead because spiders are so gr8t, you need to stop getting mind-controlled by Vriska, but sure, why not. I suppose we could try to impose a standard to improve the narrative (like all consorts being amphibians because giant galaxy frogs), but I think letting people individually decide those minor details is more important than the ability to foreshadow or callback.

Mind you, this is assuming we do a reboot right now. Another suggestion is just letting the whole thing lie for a while, taking a break from trollslum, and then starting anew when we've all regained some enthusiasm. Though a lot of you still seem pretty enthusiastic, so I dunno. How many of you would favor this, if anyone?
