View Full Version : Why wasn't Rodimus Prime, from the 1986 Transformers Movie, a monster truck?

Did Hasbro just not like enormous piles of money, I mean, what?

The Matrix of Leadership forces you to hitch up a trailer. I'm not sure they would've known how to handle a monster truck... truck.

Even if we allow that this is a requirement, I fail to see how this could have been anything but even more fantastic.

in 1986 weren't monster trucks still in the drunken redneck demographic

off-topic I am slightly surprised my spell check finds no errors with drunken redneck

How would one handle a monster truck trailer? It'd sure have to have big wheels, of course, but what else can we do to a trailer to make it worthy? Flamethrowers? Maybe have it actually be another Autobot in and of itself? Have it actually not be a closed cargo trailer but like a howitzer or something?

Also now I am thinking about Astrotrain and how scale and consistency count for nothing, so we have plenty of room for imagination here.

Uh, all of that, obviously?!

I'm pretty sure they were in the awesome things demographic which is where they have always been and will be.

EDIT: Requesting someone turn this thread into a Dinosaur Comics comic

I thought there were talks for an Optimus Prime "Armada" monster truck? (http://images.wikia.com/transformers/images/1/11/MonsterConvoy.jpg)

Rodimus Prime was the most massivest dick in the universe. Way to murder Optimise then steal his crown loser. Somone deep in the bowels of Hasbro knew this and purposefully sabotaged his design.

Rodimus Prime is a stupid head, and you are a stupid head for ever suggesting he could be cool.

Even as a super rad monster truck.

Besides, that would be infringing on the Monster Truck Patrol.

Fact: Hot Rod was rad as hell, there was no good reason at all that he had to upgrade into a robot that sucked ass.

And - the Monster Truck Patrol who were all Micromasters?

Fuck those guys forever and fuck whoever came up with that sick, sick joke.

Hot Rod killed Optimus Prime. How rad is that?
A: Not very rad.

Not sure, but I've heard somewhere that the movie cast was mostly based off concept cars. Supposedly, Hot Rod was based of this thing (http://www.supercarnet.jp/File/File-Japan/File-Dome.htm). And while I don't see it, Rodimus Prime was based off one (http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=print&thread=25278) of (http://www.boingboing.net/2005/05/19/citroen_penthouse.html) these (http://www.citroenmodelcars.nl/html/gallerycit43.htm).

The other reason? He was nearly pink (magenta)! No self respecting Monster Truck would be in those colors. I hang around a TF board, and people can't stop raving about the fact that Masterpiece Rodimus Prime was made in his proper colors. If you haven't seen MP Rodimus Prime, you can check him out here (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/site-updates-18/masterpiece-rodimus-prime-gallery-now-online-171630/). Buy it here (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=TAK11264&mode=retail).

And as far as I vaguely recall, the movie wasn't release on a Sunday, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!! But without a time traveling scooter, I can't go back & BE THERE! to check things out.

- Not in any way related, but apparently the next Masterpiece toy will be Optimus Prime/Convoy again, just a bit smaller (Rodimus Prime/Starscream sized) and come with Spike, Roller & his trailer. Pics are here (http://www.fullmetalhero.com/content.php?450-Transformers-MP-10-Masterpiece-Convoy-First-Pictures). (Hasbro supposedly will be releasing just the Hot Rod mold, with a new Firebolt-targetmaster accessory, but without the Winnebago of Doom trailer.)

Hot Rod is only as much to blame for Optimus' death as say, Romeo is in Mercutio's death. Ultimately it is Megatron/Tybalt who must take the blame for the murder.

And yes Shakespeare and the 1986 animated Transformers movie are totally comparable in their epic scope and poetic majesty.

No, Hot Rod got all up in the way as a hostage and got Prime killed.

This is how it happened. THE BASTARD.

No, I'm saying that there aren't (m)any pink Monster Trucks. There's a reason why the Hot Rod toy went from this color (http://www.allspark.com/images/stories/Toyfair_1986_Hot_Rod.jpg) to this. (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/toys/g1-1986/hot-rod/45/1/32/)

Back in the day, there was a huge stigma over the color pink. Not as much now, but even today its still there to a degree. (Yes, there are better picks of pink Hot Rod, but the only place I know where (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Toy_Fair_1986) to find them is currently down.)

(And all things aside, Pinkie is more creepy (http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkk60hzUlJ1qiq96ko1_500.png) & disturbing (http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/077/f/3/pinkie_pie_is_watching_you____by_kefkafloyd-d3by3pd.png) for me.)

I have to say I laughed a lot when Ultra Magnus was trying to open the Matrix and was all like "open you damn thing, obviously this has to be our darkest hour because I'm about to get my ass handed to me". The rise of Rodimus Prime must have made him spin in his grave.
