So Fenris and I are discussing the possibility of restarting NPF Forum Mafia as a forum game, if there would be sufficient interest. He's apparently thinking of creating an MLP: FiM Mafia game, which would be exciting.

My Mafia game is slated first, and it's Homestuck (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/) themed. The total number of participants will be flexible and will depend on interest.

Regarding Signups:

* Up to 25 people can sign up. I'm hoping for an absolute minimum of fifteen people but I won't be holding my breath.

* Sign-ups are generally on a first-come, first-serve basis, but I reserve the right to give preferential treatment to people who sign up who are actually active NPF participants and who I personally recognize and trust.

* Intimate knowledge of Homestuck is not necessary to join the Mafia game, but you may find it advantageous to at least read a few wiki pages about the characters and the storyline so you'll be familiar with some basic terms as they arise.

* Generally speaking, you should only sign up if you're actually going to be around and have internet access over the next couple months. Brief daylong breaks of inactivity are certainly permissible but if you're taking any weeklong vacations without internet access anytime soon, I'd advise you to hold off.

* If you're a Moderator you're welcome to join, but I expect you to not abuse Mod powers to learn information you'd otherwise not have access to.

Also, I'm looking for a cohost, if you'd be more interested in that kind of a role.

For what it's worth, the only thing I can think of that we can do that would give any indication of who is or is not mafia would be the fact that we can see everyone who is online, regardless of invisible status, and can therefore see who is checking their PMs from whom in the "Who's Online" screen. However, none of us cares enough to keep track of what 25 or so people are looking at on the forums every second of every day for the next couple months, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, I was just being cautious there because I have no idea what Mods here can and cannot do, and some Mods in other forums have more extensive powers. Hell, I was once involved in a community where there was a huge ruckus because a Moderator read a PM from one member to another in which that member insulted the Mod's girlfriend. (Mod had posted a picture of him and his girlfriend in the equivalent of the Camwhores thread.)

Could you explain a bit more about the rules? I'm vaguely knowledgeable about them, but don't remember fully.

I'll explain the rules more cohesively in an introductory post to the actual game, but here's some basics:

Town: The majority of Mafia participants are town-aligned, or 'the good guys.' Their goal is essentially to eliminate all non-town aligned factions off the map. The primary method to do so is through the lynch, which occurs during the day. In fact, town vanillas can only participate through lynching. Their goal is to rely upon evidence of nightkills and day activity to justify lynching scum, and avoid lynching town.

Town Power Roles: Variants of these differ depending on the theme of the game, but basically, town power roles are town-aligned folks who have additional powers beyond merely participating in a lynch. They may be able to kill at night (vigilantes), kill during the day (dayvigs), prevent a lynch (Mayors), protect someone from being killed at night (Doctors), decipher whether a person is 'guilty' or 'innocent' at night (Cops), or decipher clues that hint towards the identity of the person (flavor Cops.) There's also power roles with passive abilities, like the Bulletproof (who's immune to nightkills, but not to lynches) or the Double Voter (whose vote counts as two while he is alive.)

Scum: 'Scum' is a broad term that, in practice, I've generally used to encompass all non-town aligned factions; other Mafia players tend to only to refer to members of the Mafiate as 'scum.' The Mafiate is the opposing faction that seeks to kill all townies. In addition to being able to affect lynches while pretending to be town during the day, the Mafiates can communicate privately throughout the day and the entire faction can select one person to die at night. Mafiate members may include the Godfather (who scans innocent by Cops despite being guilty), the Roleblocker (who selects a townie to prevent from being able to take a nighttime action), the Assassin (a single scum with an extra limited use kill), and the Silencer (who prevents one townie from speaking the following day,) etc.

There's also potentially multiple scum factions; if there are two scum factions in a game, the scum factions oppose each other as well as town. Generally speaking, how many factions exist isn't revealed to the players.

There's also unaligned independent factions such as the Survivor (whose goal is simply to live to the end) and the Serial Killer (who kills 1 person each night and who 'wins' if he's the only one left alive.)

Days: During the 'daytime' (which lasts far more than a single day in practice), everyone can talk in the forum topic. Everyone tries to learn who scum is. Scum tries to mislead town and learn who the town's power roles are. Everyone can vote on a lynch target, and unvote (and change their votes) as many times as necessary. Once a majority of the surviving people vote to lynch a target, the 'day' ends.

Nights: At night, no one can talk in the forum topic (but scum can talk privately among each other in a separate location, and Mason factions, if there are any, can talk too.) Scum and power roles PM their nighttime actions to me. Once night ends, I report what's happened to everyone (most notably, who died and what role the dead played.) The game goes on.

Does this help?

Normally I would be in like a goddamn shot, because a game of politics and betrayal where I can 4CTU4LLY T4LK L1K3 TH1S all the time without seeming like a huge fanboy is right up my alley, but I'm really short on time. As usual. >: [

Welp, we're still a little ways short of our goal, but I'll actually be gone the next week anyway, so I'll just leave signups open while I'm away.

If interest is sufficient I'm hoping to start the game in mid-July. Maybe as early as the weekend of the 11th and 12th.

Well, if you'd be interested in playing, I'll guarantee you that knowledge of Homestuck isn't required at all.
As I noted earlier, it may be useful to at least look up the equivalent of a Wiki page of your character and a few others, but even that's technically optional.

Query: What is the plan if people Slim and the game stalls?

'Days' (in Mafia terms, longer than 24 hours) end early if anyone has more than 50% votes on him, but it's also standard in Mafia that whoever has the most votes at the end of the period of time is lynched even if it's under 50%. So long as a few folks are really committed, the game will progress even if some folks aren't terribly active.

Of course the easiest solution is simply to say "spend at least a solid fifteen or twenty minutes every day on Mafia if you join, the game will be so much more fun that way," and that's true too.

Cool. I'll leave signups open until Saturday night anyway, so people can keep joining if they'd like -- there's room for two more players in this setup -- but we have enough people now.
You should receive your roles on Sunday via NPF PM. Game starts either Sunday night or Monday (during the day EST) depending on my availability.
In the interim I have to decide where to host the scumboard.

That's only a suitable option if the chat room was protected so that everyone else couldn't get in there.

Anyway, start time may be delayed about 24 hours, I've had something that come up that will take the majority of my day tomorrow.

...'Kay.
I'll be sending out everyone's Role piecemeal overnight.

I'll have a lengthier description of the rules regarding this in the first post of the official Mafia topic, but just so you all know this in advance:
You are not allowed to copy-paste flavor description of your role in the Mafia topic. You must paraphrase descriptions of your character when you claim, or restate the character's traits or abilities in your own words. This is to prevent some of y'all from relying on the written style of the flavor text as a justification for your votes.

Exception is the name and role itself. You are free to, for example, state that you are Black Mage, TOWN Vanilla. (Relying on 8BT just to provide a pertinent example.)

Just clarifying this in advance.

Solid Snake
07-19-2011, 08:50 AM
That took slightly longer than expected, in part because I like writing larger walls of text than is necessary.

Anyway y'all please do confirm that you've received your roles if you have a chance. I'd like to start as early as tonight, if everyone's up for it. But I'd also like to provide you some time before we begin so you can ask me questions about your roles.

But yes, everyone has their roles, and that means no one can announce their roles or hint at their roles here or in any other NPF topic or PM with other players. You can claim all you want once the game starts, but let's keep our mouths zipped elsewhere.
(If you're an exception due to your role, you know it.)

I'm looking for a Replacement for Revolving Ocelot in our current game.

Greed, who was a Town Vanilla (died N1) and thus not privy to any extraneous information in the game, has volunteered to potentially replace anyone who needs replacing, so he's presumably an option, and if he confirms his interest here in the next 24 hours or so I'll probably give him the slot. However, I generally prefer 'blank slate' players when they're possible to attain, so I'll keep this open for the next day or so and see if anyone else expresses interest.
