Donatllo was easily the most essential ninja turtle- his machines constantly proving vital to stopping the villains. All the other turtles were just like fighters important but not bringing any essential skills that the turtles would have been doomed without.

Donatello all the way.
Donatello was a total nerd. Raphael was the badass, Leonardo was the noble leade and Splinter was the wise old mentor. Michelangelo was the rad one.

Best turtle by category
Preteen - Michelangelo. He says dude and skateboards and is radical.
Teenager - Leonardo. Dual wields katanas, that's teenager rad.
Grownup - Donatello. He's the smart and useful one, the most practical.
Emo - Raphael. Dark and frothy, usually seen underneath rain.
Favorite movie is The Karate Kid - Splinter. A hairy Mr. Miyagi.
Seen something past the 1987 series and movies - Shredder. The man is badass.
Uses the internet for it's main purpose - April O'Neil. She's the chick.
Really likes masks - Casey Jones. Wears a hockey mask.

Rob Paulson, the voice of Raphael in the 1980s show, will be the voice of Donatello in Nickelodeon's upcoming new TMNT cartoon. I feel like that's gonna mess with my mind a bit.
But then they've got Sean Astin as Raph, and Jason Biggs as Leo, so maybe that'll be the least of my worries.
EDIT: Oh, and while I'm not claiming he's quantifiably the best, Raphael was and remains my favorite turtle. That may be the fault of the first movie though, what with the focus mostly on him, and how big an impact it has on my young mind.
Also, has anyone watched the first movie lately? I bought the blu-ray, and it really holds up, to my pleasant surprise!

You're talking about the awesome Turtles Forever (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1543920/), and despite the Nickelodeon logo on the poster in that link, they actually didn't have anything to do with making it. They simply bought the franchise after it aired and then distributed the DVD. (Which was a total shame, because they put out the full screen TV edit version instead of the widescreen Director's Cut that had been streaming online.)
Turtles Forever was an amazing wrap-up to the 2003 cartoon though.

They wre full of poop, bum and sex jokes where the joke is referencing the fake that one of the above exists (John Tuttoro's ass!!! That's comedy!), racist stereotypes which made me feel rather unclean and were about 3 hours long only about 5 minutes of that which was robot-fighting which you could barely see and you didn't really know who the characters were and could barely tell them apart so you didn't really care about the fight- the rest of the movie being said "jokes" and dull human character interactions. I got nothing against simple action movies full of explosions and cool shit happening but totally none of that happens in the transformers movies. I just don't see what's entertaining about it- it lacks the character depth or sophistication to be entertaining as a drama and it is too padded out with superflous shit and poorly filmed to be entertaining as a robot fighting movie. A robot fighting movie would have been great, what we got was epic movie with some blurry robots tacked onto the last quarter.

I didn't like the stereotyping or John Tuttoro, but most of it is just light hearted jokes broken up by giant robots. I can see why you might not find it entertaining but really, I've never understood how you couldn't tell the characters apart.
You couldn't ask me to describe one Decepticon from another as far as their visuals go, but actually seeing them and not being able to tell "That's the chopper one", 'That's the jet one' and "That's the tank one"? Really? And please don't tell me you mean the Autobots as well. Because they're practically color coded.
My only problem was Sam and his girlfriend, but whether it's just because I was tuning them out the whole time or me misremembering the events I recall their relationship having a backseat to EXPLOSIONS.

Fine, you know what Donatello is the awesome one because one time they were all transported by this giant hovering interdimensional cow head that swallowed them and he was in this intergalactic space wrestling match with aliens and his wrestling outfit was the most coolest.

Donatello is on the left, clearly this is the coolest intergalactic wrestling outfit ever.
Leonardo's was second coolest. Raphael's would have been cool (in a BDSM gimp suit kind of way) if it weren't just an extension of his angsty personality. Wahhhh, I'm a better fighter than Leo but he's a better leader, waaaaaaaah. Ugh, such a terrible Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Plus for the following issues Raph kept the gimp suit on after all the other ones had quit wearing them because he thought it was just so badass until it was finally destroyed. What a loser.
Mikey's was just terrible and I have to say I still don't know what the hell was going on there.

Okay, I just had to stop in and place a vote for Leonardo, the leader, the awesome back-bone of the TMNT. He may not have had the inventor's mind of Donatello, the wit of Raphael, or the, um, pizza-scarfing skills of Michelangelo, but he held the group together with a noble-yet-humble spirit of camaraderie, bravery, and sacrifice. Go, Leo! Plus, as previously mentioned, the katana dual-wield is pretty awesome. And DaVinci is a rockin' namesake, as artist, inventor, writer, and all-around Renaissance man. And that turquoise blue color is the best, too. :3: It's my ultimate favorite color to this day, and I think it all started with liking Leonardo in TMNT. (Before TMNT, my favorite color was a more typical little-girl pink.) So, anyway, while all the turtles were great, IMHO Leo was (and remains) the best!

When I was extremely young, my favorite color was red. Then I met the ninja turtles. Now, it's green and has been ever since.
As to the best, well, I always thought the dual-wielding katanas of Leonardo was unbelievably awesome, so he was my favorite, and, as leader, clearly the best. Except for Donatello, the inventor, nerd, and all-around awesome guy, who I think is the best because, you know, he likes to read, and so do I. Also, the staff in the game was the best thing. Then there was Raphael, who wore red, so that was cool... even though his weapons were kind of "meh" and the movies (and some comics) made him into something of an antisocial whiner. Michelangelo... not so much. I mean: nunchucks. Weak (especially in said ancient NES game). Special ability: being 'cool' and 'partying'. Hey, look at the two things I was never good at! So, totally can't relate. Finally, (and I admit I could be remembering this wrong) I seem to recall that he was always goofing it up for the other turtles (when Raph's antisocial behavior wasn't, anyway) with his silliness - usually getting them in trouble that the other turtles would have to get him out of.
Now, to clarify, I don't hate Mikey. In fact, I think he's kind of an okay dude. Just not as awesome as the other turtles.
So, what's my list?
1) (in alphabetical order) Donatello/Leonardo - I actually can't pick between the two of them: though I have more of Don's traits/likes/etc over all, the movies (at least the first one, to my memory) made him something of a Mikey-clone, personality-wise; and Leo's the leader I always aspire to be (aka, one wielding two katanas, while being awesome), and, you know, wears blue (which is slightly cooler than purple).
2) Raphael - he's cool and all, but a little too against-the-grain for his (and the teams) own good, and yeah, the black suit was a little weird (it was, if I recall, supposed to be all ninja-like... but was notsomuch).
4) Michelangelo - if there was a great fourth turtle, it'd be him. He's not the best, or most reliable, or most relatable (did I just make up a word or is my spelling simply mussed up by dyslexia?), but he's a decent enough guy, knows how to eat pizza, and pretty fun to have around. (he takes the fourth slot, 'cause, there's four guys. Raph takes second because... um... hey, look a distraction! *ninja smoke-bomb/vanish*)

You know the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are actually pretty bad ninjas. They always get discovered by the Foot and often aren't stealthy at all. Sometimes they even drive around in a van rather obviously, and ally themselves with Casey Jones who is about as foreign to stealth and tact as you can be.
I guess they are still in training, though, except I guess Leo was considered a full ninja at some point by Splinter. I guess he is just held back by the others.
