One piece has ALOT of good openings. And the only thing that EVER made one piece terrible was the dubbing by 4kids. Funimation is doing a very good job dubbing and with the OPs.

I really don't get the massive hate for the english dub of Robotech. I mean, yes the narration is heavy handed and pretty stilted by today's standards, but most of the actual dialogue is mature (not in the hur-hur, cussing sense) and cleverly written.

I wasn't even aware there was a massive hate for it, as I've only seen the dub version via Netflix. That was just my opinion based on the narration you mentioned, as well as the fact for all the hours they put into talking each other, I still needed to check wikipedia to figure what was going on. Also, Admiral Gloval's VA somehow made him sound Indian, Russian, Scottish, and Spanish all at once.

Still, pretty fun to watch.

There are quite a few I like personally, but I do not know if they'd hold up to others' opinions.

That said, everyone should like the openings to Serial Experiments LAIN and Witch Hunter Robin (even if the latter is a Madonna video).

I suppose not having watched it is why you didn't know "Cruel Angel's Thesis" is the opening song. OK, nevermind, you posted only a minute after the previous post and likely didn't see it.



I am a big fan of the version sung by Asuka, Misato, and Rei.

I have also decided not to rescind my earlier contributions. I like the songs enough that they should be good additions to this thread even without the visuals of the openings to accompany them.

However, there were others I was considering but that fall short. For example, Trigun's opening theme is neat and all but it's not very interesting by itself, as a song. Likewise "fun" intros from comedy shows and stuff I like (e.g. Tenchi Muyo, Excel Saga, Nadesico [perhaps purely for the phrases "you get to burning" and "going your days grow up"]) also fall short as songs by themselves. I also think "The Sacred Moon" from Shingetsutan Tsukihime is an amazing thing to use as an intro to things -- I even used it as the opener for my "show" when we at clanBOB maintained a streaming radio thing -- but not really a superb song by itself.


I respectfully submit the following as songs that I like even by themselves:
- "Duvet", the opening to LAIN, as mentioned
- "Shell", from With Hunter Robin (though this may be my guitar bias)
- the Record of Lodoss War television series opening "Kiseki no Umi"
- GitSSAC "Inner Universe"
- Gasaraki's "Message 9", the opening theme, is something I came to adore after watching the series; an AMV for a separate show using this song helped
