View Full Version : The Dreadful -- Chapter 2

Pages : [1] 2

I decided that starting with this page I would divide the comic into approximate 24-30 page chapters. This chapter covers page 39 to page 61.

So, here is Page 39! (http://www.nuklearpower.com/dreadful/)

Brief (but dramatic) flashback time! The first appearance of Poe, and I guess Jeanne (in dialog). Jeanne appears in full on the next page (dun duuun)

I mainly wanted to show Jeanne and Poe, and I could only really do that via flashback. It was a good time for one.

Looks like Liz is Little Ms.Diplomacy (where violence is just a weapon among many, and one of last resort) and Kit is more of a "It's not a problem if not alive anymore" kind of problemsolver.

I'd have no problem putting in the occasional video game reference. Though I don't think I would want to force them on the comic. I have actually thought of a few, and it's not like parody is alien territory for The Dreadful. After all, there's the comic with El Sabueso.

I am having a scene with a sniper, if there was a time to make a Sniper Wolf/Otakon joke now would be a pretty good time...

The first appearance of Jeanne Noelle. Now we have a visual idea of who Kit think she can handle. I think Kit might be over-estimating herself, but time shall tell.

Is that a normal horse scaled to size or some kind of demon horse? It's like Clydesdale size, and I don't think they used Clydesdales in the Old West.

Also only now do I just realize the really tall lady in the second comic is not Jeanne. I initially thought Jeanne shot her and then showed up acting concerned for some reason.

Obviously that'd be out of character. Jeanne doesn't even have pupils!

MSperoni
07-16-2011, 02:44 AM
It's proportioned like a Clydesdale (just to make it easier to draw), but I don't know if that's what it really is. Maybe a Dire Horse? My Little Dire Pony?

(Dire always goes with everything).

I mainly just wanted Jeanne to ride on something a lot bigger and more menacing than a normal horse. Sorta how in "Dynasty Warriors" Lu Bu rides on that ginormous horse Red Hare.

The tall lady was Catherine. I think someone off-panel in page 2 mentions her name and Kit mentions "that tall lady" who brought her to the hospital. If she had been Jeanne, Kit would have recognized her.

So let me get this straight.

Kit = Hellspawn, not redeemable according to moomonism
Jeanne = Technically human and, according to moomonism, redeemable?

Because with those eyes and ears I'd guess she's some other sort of hellspawn.

A Zarkin' Frood
07-16-2011, 07:22 AM
I dunno, Jeanne looks pretty irredeemable to me. Boozloaf definitely didn't see her. Then, looks can often be deceiving. There are her words too, though. But this is a comic, could just be a way to visualize Jeanne's total irredeemability. That wasn't a word a second ago, now it is. Unless Matt is playing us for fools by making Jeanne look utterly horrible until we found out that we've only seen her from Kit's point of view, who's obviously biased.

Honestly, I don't like Jeanne's appearance. It isn't anything like what I pictured.

Also, she is fat and her horse is fat.

Krylo
07-16-2011, 05:06 PM
She's not fat. She's built.

That's muscle size not fat size.

Might be some breed of ogre or some such, given her physical build and lack of irises and what not. Certainly not human, and almost certainly a physically imposing race.

Melfice

I know this isn't drawn all realistic, but I'm sure Jeanne's face would have been much rounder if she'd been fat.
Gonna join the camp of that being muscle.

Not sure if she's ogre, or what... for all we know, that's what Kit's gonna look like when she grows up on account of "hellspawn" physically changing over time.
I'm sure it'll be explained as we continue.

Define "looking pretty human".

It wears clothes and has learned to read the time on it's pocket watch. As well, it is bi-pedal and has hands: Is this anthropomorphic rabbit a human? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Down_the_Rabbit_Hole.png)

;) (EDIT: I am aware that this is a fairly big jump from weird eyes and pointy ears to full-on anthro-rabbits, but y'know.)

But seriously, the ears and eyes are a good tell that Jeanne is not human.
The same way Kit is not human by way of her horns.

I think she'd consider farming/ranching beneath her ambition. Like if she ended up being simply a ranch-hand she'd be disappointed. Poe's too old and developed to be moe. (based on what I got from that article)"Moe" is a complicated term.

MSperoni

I'm leaning toward them being twins actually. Every picture of Poe so far is just a picture of Kit that I've traced and changed a bit (hair, expression, and outfit) :D I suppose later I MIGHT change it, and have Kit just be the oldest (or maybe twist it and have her be the young, cocky one who bosses around her older sister)

Even if I decide to make them twins, I don't think they'd look exactly alike. Kit would probably be more in shape, owing to her status as Action Girl. Kit's also a lot more "take charge" and better than Poe at pretty much everything, so she carries herself differently.

There's a lot of "maybes" floating around in The Dreadful. I really haven't sat down and done much thinking about the comic in awhile. I pretty much just have it on cruise-control and plan on working things out as I come to 'em.

Personally, I always thought "moe" meant the same as "cute", as in the phrase "I'm dating this really cute girl." Sexually attractive, but not "hot."

Poe isn't the oldest?

Well, some back-story details are still up in the air because I haven't had the need to think about them yet. This is one of those instances... I suppose I probably shouldn't have said anything, since I'm unsure myself at the moment.

So, I guess until the comic actually says who is the oldest, it's just gonna be something everyone will have to speculate over :P

Ambiguity sometimes isn't a bad thing either.

I mean, her face is really weird looking and bloody in the last panel, but she seems to be grinning, which I figured was her going, "Wheeehehe next Jeanne."

Bard The 5th LW

to be fair, those were body shots, they have a chance to miss vitals/etc. That shot is square to the head, It could be that she got lucky and the bullet wasn't going at max velocity for some reason/etc. and her skull managed to stop it, which is what I assume happened, judging by the lack of blood.

I dunno, earlier conversation seemed to imply that normal bullets don't carry the same effect on her that it would for a normal human. A headshot might certainly be able to accomplish some serious damage, but unless its a silver bullet she may just be that resilient.

The Dreadful is actually a demon that manages to change into a big-ass laser revolver.

The Dreadful is bound to Kit. As long as The Dreadful remains unharmed, so does Kit.

That's not a very good policy to have about desktop wallpapers... Particularly Dreadful ones because then you probably aren't going to have ANY ever on your desktop :P (with the possible exception of two characters, assuming I make wallpapers of them, which is likely. I won't say who though)

It's a policy that preserves self-respect. It's only a little part of a no anime girls, no space marines, no internet memes, no cannibal corpse covers and no various other things policy. I just only cited the relevant parts of it because it can get rather long.

To each their own, I suppose. Though it does kinda make me sad that you don't consider the characters respectable enough to use for your desktop, especially when you and the GPDC folks were so helpful in the initial stages of the comic's creation :(

I mean, it's not like anyone HAS to use them. After all, some people just like other wallpapers better. But still, I'd like to think the comic was worthwhile enough to overcome that kinda black and white appraisal (Catherine is more than a large pair of boobs after all, and it's not like she goes around dressed like Ivy), but I suppose policies are policies. I guess you wouldn't use an Erin one either?

So, I know Erin spent every strip 'till now speaking German, but did anyone else imagine her speaking in perfect unaccented English in this strip? It makes it at least twice as funny.

MSperoni
08-04-2011, 06:27 AM
Well, if you heard her speak she'd have a noticeable accent (like Liz points out). I wanted to avoid hamming it up with her English though (Like if I were to write: "I vill ask you again. Vhere eez Burkez reeng!" or something). In an upcoming page she does say "ja" at the end of a sentence.

I think it'll become more noticeable that she can't speak English (or whatever The Dreadful's equivalent is) well when she tries to say more complicated sentences.

A Zarkin' Frood
08-04-2011, 08:13 AM
I thought Liz just said it was an accent to hide the fact that there's, in fact, a ring involved, which might interest Kit if she knew what it's all about, maybe.

Also: It's highly unlikely a German speaker will say "Ja" randomly at the end of a foreign language sentence It's not even very common in German sentences. That only exists in American movies, I believe. Because it sounds funnier than an actual accent and typical mistakes Germans may make, ja.

Loyal
08-04-2011, 08:34 AM

Also: It's highly unlikely a German speaker will say "Ja" randomly at the end of a foreign language sentence It's not even very common in German sentences.

I generally dislike "Gratuitous *insert language*" components in dialog. Like "ja" or when a muchacho randomly says words of their language after speaking an entire sentence in English, comprende?

(One thing I didn't like about the dialog in Assassin's Creed 2 was this. Like Ezio would speak perfect English the entire time and then 'oh hey! an Italian word!' )

Which is why I didn't wanna ham up Erin's English speaking or sprinkle it with occasional German words.... Yet, I still put the "ja" in one balloon on an upcoming page.. I guess I figured it helped establish that she had an accent. Even tho it's kind of strange. I only do it that one time though :P

There are some things I don't want Erin to say. Like "ain't" or "dunno" or "I'm gonna" ... I think those would be words (if you can call them words) that would make her seem like she was more familiar with the language than she should be.

(I'm not done w/ German yet, so you still have a job, IG! :D)

Vancian casting bullshit!

If it's simply a 1-per-day ability isn't Vancian, since vancian spellcasting is a way of organizing/limiting spellcasting. Ie, you have a choice between various items, but you can only choose a limited number.
Even if it's a form of spellcasting it could also be mana based ("The dreadful, Mana cost: Effing lot!) or event based ("The dreadful recharges at dawn/midnight", for example).

It could even be Skill/chance based ("The dreadful: Causes instability. Each time you fire the dreadful roll X number of D6 dice, X being the number of times the dreadful has been used previously that day. If any dice shows a 1, 2 or 3 you're sucked into a dimensional vortex. That's a bad thing)

Thinking of The Dreadful in terms of "issues" doesn't work very well for it. It's like thinking of 8bit in terms of issues. It might seem to drag at times, but I think that's more to do with how it's uploaded. If you read it straight through it goes pretty fast (except for the earlier parts w/ all the dialog, but I've learned my lesson with those).

So it's more accurate to say we're fifty pages in, and not two issues in.

Which is something to be considered if The Dreadful is ever up for being printed. I think it would be better for The Dreadful to be printed into a big collection rather than as individual month-by-month comics. Sorta like a manga.

I'm thinking of dividing The Dreadful into sections based on the "star" character. Sorta like Osamu Tezuka's Buddha did. Like this one is "Kit and Liz" and the next one might be "Charsi" and then "Kit" and then "Jeanne" etc. The only reason I may not do that is because it could get confusing as to who the main character is. Maybe that's a good thing though because then everyone can argue about it :D

I was more referring to issues usually being 22 pages long, I don't really view Dreadful as issues and don't think it would benefit from forcefully breaking it up. And 40-ish page long issues aren't that rare either. Collections seem to be 120+/- pages. Though, seeing as it's black and white anyway the 250-something page manga format doesn't seem like too bad of an idea. It has its charm too. As evidenced by Scott Pilgrim.

So yeah, this almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about which I definitely don't.

Does this mean demons don't have to eat?

Kit eats. Her diet consists of deep fried anything and candy. And deep fried candy. And bacon.

This Western is missing aboriginal peoples on the frontier.

It's not missing them, they just haven't appeared yet :)

But no deep fried bacon?

I mean, bacon is fried to begin with, but there's regular frying and then there's deep frying.

...is it wrong that I somehow want to see deep fried bacon-wrapped deep fried candy now? And maybe actually eat it?

The Dreadful: Encouraging Death By Grease Since 2011.

I also now have imagery of a Japanese High School with Boozloaf as a concerned but-good-hearted sensei and Kit as a delinquent... with a giant pompadour.

This comic makes me think strange things. Or, I should say, has me post them publicly.

I forgot about deep frying. Yeah, Kit would probably like that too. Though I dunno if they had deep-frying in the Old West. I haven't researched it. But I had a grenade launcher in the comic....

There's also double-frying. Like you fry something, and then fry it again.

Like double-fried french fries.

Kit's a bad influence, we probably shouldn't hang out with her after school.

They did. Deep frying was invented by the ancient egyptians, and spread from Egypt to all over the world.

Also, the pages being uploaded twice a week makes the comic appear to drag more than it actually does. Once this scene is over with, and you go back and read it, you'll find it goes by at a pretty good pace.

I like to give fights attention and make them more than just single-page skirmishes. Not that I plan on going the route of DBZ, but still I want it to feel like the characters have been through something.

I think Liz is probably just saying that "blowed out your other end" as a joke to annoy Kit. I have drawn Kit since this and she has no hole on her backside (except the one her tail goes through).

However, I haven't actually drawn her at an angle where one could see a hole *down there* so maybe she needs to think about buying her a new pair of pants...I wonder how much a pair of jeans costs in Ye Olde Westerne Dayse.

Erin has trouble flying away, and decides to fight back! I'm assuming that wings (and a lot else) doesn't work well when you've been zapped w/ magic lightning. Erin's aim might not be super great either.

Zapped by magic lightning! Ability drain! Movement speed reduced! Unable to fly for 2 turns!

Erin's Mauser only resembles the Sniper's SMG in that the SMG looks a bit like a different, heavily modified, model Mauser (the M712).
And even then it looks more like an MPL submachine gun.

Seems like Erin's "German-ness" and her being in a fantasy Texas (of sorts) isn't all that un-historical: Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Texan)

Not that I'm surprised there was immigration to Texas, it's just some people have said Erin speaking German is "out of place" and it turns out it really isn't.

However I like to think of Erin as a mysterious person hired specifically to be an assassin, and not from a family if immigrants (like she wouldn't claim to be a citizen of the country where The Dreadful takes place).

I've been reading up on the period's history, and I came across that, so I figured I'd mention it here :) (I'm also kinda sleepy so maybe it's not worth mentioning, but oh well :D)

My god, she has a mouth! She seems like a whole different character without her smoke.

Also: On the German out of place thing, it really isn't. When Europe invaded America all kinds of cultures came to the continent, so there's probably nothing that would truly be out of place. From what I understand there were even quite a lot of Germans. And I only get that from some of the place names and less common but not exactly rare last name. Not specifically Texas, though. But it's not a stretch, really. Plus, for some reason I always assumed that Erin either came from the outside, or has that lone gunman thing going, which might explain why she talks to herself all the time. Well okay, I know that monologues in comics aren't rare, but I like to look for reasons for little details that will probably never matter..
