Nope, a different studio has the rights. I don't think Sony even showed the Marvel logo in the trailer.

While what Lumenskir said is true, that another studio has the rights, they are making his parents agents of SHIELD for some reason (I'm pretty sure this wasn't in the comics...if it is it's up there with bad ideas like having Bruce Wayne's dad secretly be alive or how Superman was the last son of Krypton...except for all these Kandorians hanging out over here on this other planet, yo). The reason either being to give a reason for them being dead other than say, a tragic car accident, OR to have Spider-Man eventually fight whoever killed them, or whatever. Or maybe they are still alive or imprisoned somewhere, I dunno.

In any case, I think it's kind of dumb, not only that they are doing the origin story again but then making changes to it to make it take up even more movie time.

I seriously have no idea why they are rebooting this movie series. Just change the actor and have a brief psychedelic dream sequence explaining the origin (ala The Incredible Hulk) and then just come up with an original story starting there. No one needs to see Spidey hanging out in high school again or awkwardly dating Mary Jane or whatever the hell is in store for us.

The whole thing just screams low-budget to me, as well. These actors are complete no-names as far as I can see. Apparently Tobey Macguire would cost too much at this point so they get some complete unknown.

Also also, I hope to dear god the CGI in the trailer was just thrown in cheaply to illustrate to us that we are watching a Spider-Man trailer and not an example of the quality in the film itself, because it looked really cheap and exactly like I was watching the demo for a PS3 video game.

EDIT: By the way, is the Vulture still the villain for this film or did they alter that since last I heard details?

I'm also finding it hard to care about this one. Rebooting a series that is less than 10 years old, redoing the origin again (don't most people already know how Spidey gets his powers anyway? Why do we ned to see it again?), the complete lack of anything interesting going on in that trailer.

You know what this is don't you? This is them trying to deny Marvel the rights to the franchise so they can merge it with Avengers. The've thrown it together as quick as they can, with some no name actors and shitty cgi, just so they can make some more money off it because otherwise Marvel would just buy it back and make an actually decent movie that ties in with all their other movies.

Magus

Hopefully they plan on just charging Marvel a crapload of money or partnership rights on proceeds or something since I'd love to see Spidey in the Avengers or Avengers 2 (even if traditionally he wasn't in the Avengers, I'm pretty sure in recent times he has been in it several times).

No name actors? Seriously? Are you out of touch with reality or something?

This movie has Martin Sheen, Sally Fields, Dennis Leary, Emma Stone, and Andrew Garfield! Someone's bound to recognize at least two of those names. And of course the CGI doesn't look 100% yet. The movie is coming out next year, they've still got time to work on it.

And I'm gonna be in the minority on this, but I enjoyed the first person bit. I can't wait to see this trailer in 3D so I can get the feel of zipping through New York.

And to whoever asked, yeah Peter's parents were SHIELD agents in the comics. So they're actually adapting that bit right.

I'll admit, I think this movie has made a mistake in redoing the origin instead of skimming over it (ala Spectacular Spider-Man) but maybe it'll work to their benefit. From what I gleamed from the trailer, Peter is actually gonna look and act like an outcast. I never believed Tobey's performance as a nerd but Garfield looks like he can pull it off.

Tbh I hadn't actually looked up who was in it, I just remebered someone else in this thread saying the same thing. Out of all of those I still only recognise Sheen and Leary outright, though I still can't recall what I might have seen either of them in. The only thing I've seen Emma Stone in is Zombieland and didn't recognise the name immediately. The others I have no clue about.

Okay, okay, C-list actors. I mean, I like Denis Leary but the man is a comedian and TV actor in the end. It probably comes from mainly my not recognizing the guy playing Spider-Man, the girl playing Mary Jane, the people playing Uncle Ben and Aunt May, etc. Tobey Macguire was already an A-list actor before they paid him a bunch of money to be in Spider-Man.

Well, I'm glad to hear they didn't just make up the parents being SHIELD agents, but on the other hand I don't really like that, as I said, much like what they did with Batman's dad or Superman turning out to have various surviving Kryptonian people in the form of Kandorians.

How did Macguire not pull off the nerd thing, by the way? He was incredibly soft-spoken and pretty flimsy looking (until he took his shirt off in that one scene) with a common everyday haircut, fairly plain face (in comparison to other movie actors). The new guy has a stylish hair-do and looks more like your more traditional pretty boy.

EDIT: By the way my waffling is pretty pointless, I am going to go see this movie. I just hope it's not bad.

I don't. Is she famous for something?

This is a ridiculosu claim; Dennis Leary is at worst B-list, Sally Field and Martin Sheen are Hollywood royalty.

How do you define "Hollywood royalty"? I'm not going by their actual level of talent, I'm going by how they are treated by Hollywood movie studios. Do you think William H. Macy gets paid anywhere near the amount Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie or whoever gets paid, despite being a demonstrably better actor? Martin Sheen's last really big leading role I remember was The Dead Zone, otherwise mostly secondary characters, I don't think he commands seven figure movie contracts. In this aspect it is people from the C-list and people I've personally never heard of (maybe they are in movies I haven't seen).

I see Martin Sheen is playing Uncle Ben. Let me just tell you that he has become so unrecognizable since the '80s I had no idea, because his biggest role since then was on a TV show. TV actors simply don't have the same pull as movie actors. Actors may have once been B-List actors (despite your assertion I don't think Sheen was ever A-List) but they are shuffled down as time passes. Some actors are such great actors they command high amounts of money even into perpetuity. It's a cost-cutting measure to get Martin Sheen and so on.

Again, didn't know he was playing Uncle Ben. But I seriously didn't recognize the other actors/actresses.

Magus

Spider-Man 1-3, The Dark Knight, Iron Man 1 and 2, etc.

How 'bout this? I hate the guy who is Spider-Man, I don't know who he is and he looks dumb. Forget I said anything about the supporting cast I won't be watching for the vast majority of the film.

Professor Smarmiarty
07-21-2011, 04:45 PM
Those films are all stocked with B and C-listers. Lots of tv actors too.

Who would you cast as Spider-man out of interest?

Also doesn't A list cast usually mean terrible movie? Cause it means they've got fuckloads of money and thus need to make the blandest most marketable fim possible to make back their budget. And the A-lsit actors are all pretty awful.

I'm just not seeing how "I don't recognise the lead actor" is a valid complaint against a movie.

Which superhero movie has had "A-list" actors?
Spider-Man 1-3
Six Movie Roles Immediately Previous to Spider-Man 1
Cats & Dogs
Lou the Beagle (voice)

2001 Don's Plum
Ian

2000 Wonder Boys
James Leer

1999/I Ride with the Devil
Jake Roedel

1999 The Cider House Rules
Homer Wells

1998 Pleasantville
David

I'll maybe give you Cider House as Oscar Bait, but where is the blockbuster headlined by Maguire?
The Dark Knight
Six Movie Roles Immediately Previous to Batman Begins

Howl's Moving Castle
Howl (voice: English version)

2004 The Machinist
Trevor Reznik

2002 Equilibrium
John Preston

2002 Reign of Fire
Quinn Abercromby

2002 Laurel Canyon
Sam

2001 Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Mandras

Reign of Fire and Captain Corelli were flops, Equillibrium and Machinist were limited release, and American Psycho (just missed the cutoff) is a cult favorite at best.

Unless you meant that The Dark Knight was headlined by an A-Lister because Bale was catapulted into that realm thanks to Batman Begins...
Iron Man 1 and 2
Six Movie Roles Immediately Previous to Iron Man 1

Charlie Bartlett
Nathan Gardner

2007 Lucky You
Telephone Jack

2007/I Zodiac
Paul Avery

2006 Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus
Lionel Sweeney

2006 A Scanner Darkly
James Barris

2006 The Shaggy Dog
Dr. Kozak

Yeah, nothing approaching Hollywood Gold there (although Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (9 before) is one of my favorite movies), and he was just barely out of the penumbra of the "Yeah he's good, but he has so many drug/alcohol problems" talk.

I could make the argument that the Doom thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpb13mDBP1I) was more stupid. They're also different things using a similar cinematog- cinema- camera technique.

Also, I could pull up a few threads where I was all like "Hey, Batman: Arkham Asylum looks like a great game!" and you're all like "Meh." If I am not mistaken, Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker's first girlfriend.

I will say I don't like the look of the new Spiderman. But that is the only thing I can really say I don't like. The big question is if they can make us care about this new guy. I never was a big Spiderman person, but Peter Parker is one of the most liked comic heroes.

The Nick Fury movie is pretty epic. It starts with Nick Fury living in a mineshaft in Alaska or something for no reason that was ever stated. It ended with like, a laser light show if the few vestiges of imagery remaining in my memory are any example of what was going on. There was a mad scientist and a flying fortress in there somewhere, the rather famous flying SHIELD fortress. I think there were flying platforms too, though I might just be misremembering Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and incorporating the two plots together in my head. It's been a few years since I saw it and I can't remember a lot of it. It was on in the dead of night on some movie channel or other, possibly the literal "witching hour" of three a.m.

I'm not sure I could be convinced that Topher Grace is Peter Parker in one movie when he was Venom in the last.

Like, I get it's a reboot, but Spiderman 3 wasn't that long ago. Face is still fresh in the mind.

Plus I personally would like to avoid ever seeing Topher Grace in anything ever again.

There was a campaign sometime ago to get Don Glover (Troy from Community) to play Spiderman. This would be great for multiple reasons.

He's a good comic actor and apparently pretty good at improv and writing so he'd be great at the quips
He can make himself geeky, awkward and wimpy one minute then tough and cool the next, pretty important for Spidey.
The heart attack inducing apoplexy amongst the comics base for casting a black Spiderman would probably be vastly more entertaining than any comic book movie ever has been or ever will.
It gives someone an excuse to post that comic with Spidey in court with J Jonah Jameson

As Donald Glover put it, if you walked up to someone who had never heard of Spider-Man before and told them it was about a poor, bullied teenager from Queens, abandoned by his parents, who lives with his aunt and uncle, until his uncle gets shot in a carjacking, the first thing that pops to mind probably isn't "dorky white kid."

...In the early part of the trailer, it looked like he had webs coming from his hands without assistance (sticking to his hair by accident), but in the Mirror's Edge segment, it looked like he had an artificial web-thrower mounted on his left wrist.

So which is it? Organic webs or synthetic ones?

This would have at least been one way of justifying their insane insistence on rehashing his origin.

I'll read the first couple issues of that just to make sure Pete didn't die so Marvel could fill some quotas. I was kind of hoping for a Jewish Spider-Man so we could get another reason for the whole guilt deal.

I think it's cool to add cultural diversity but this has me worried. This guy has no connection to Peter save for what they're gonna retcon. They had to have been planning his death for a while so they could have introduced this guy earlier.

Because I'm a mean-ass bitter-ass cynical old man I'm going to say that if this guy lasts at least as many issues as Cassandra Cain's original series did plus one year, without going insane, turning evil, being killed, otherwise getting fucked over, or just turning out to be a shitty character*, I am assigning Brian Bendis a massive amount of credit, backdated to today.

If he gets fed into the woodchipper of whatever nearest awful Event Comic then he forfeits all points, forever.

*I'll even grade the "shitty character" thing with a "for Bendis" tacked on.

New character should have been half-black and half-white and running for class president. Flash Thompson, Jr. spreads rumors that he is a secret...Wiccan... to try and ruin his campaign.

I want bright orange with the black lines so he looks like a basketball. Then the villains can make fun of him. He can then retort with a witty one liner as he defeats them, such as "three-pointer!" or "slam dunk!"

I thought the already did that with Batwoman? (http://cltampa.com/dailyloaf/archives/2010/07/22/what-would-batwoman-do-a-coming-out-story#.TjmRfYKz6Ko) Seriously, gay Spiderman? Does he marry Eddie Brock? Does MJ become Venom?

Ahh, sweet schadenfreude.

Um, Shyria, I don't think think we're talking about shadenfreude (taking pleasure in other peoples' pain). I mean, Glenn Beck is just being a stupid. I don't think he's pained that others hate him, and I don't think the Obamas are pained by either being multiracial OR being criticized by Glenn Beck. I wouldn't be.

In other news, I wasn't sure if I'd get the chance to post this (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/team-nchick/nostalgia-chick/31881-spiderman) here, considering how the conversation was headed. When suddenly, thanks to Shyria, it became relevant** again! Weeee! Totally how they should handle the next movie, you guys. BOTH versions! AT ONCE! I smell TRILOGY! AND GENIUS!

*No, this is NOT correct, and I do not in any way agree with it. Glenn Beck does, though! (Apparently)
**At least as relevant as shadenfreude!

At least Glenn Beck is bringing the term "There goes the neighborhood!" into the realm of...monthly comic books. Clearly an accomplishment for the...betterment of mankind?

EDIT: Latent homophobia was kind of weird*, though. I mean, nobody said the new Spidey was gay, and yet Glenn Beck asks if he is.

*As in, for a normal person, whereas with Glenn Beck it's actually business as usual.

I'd say that if there was any doubt that all of this is because these people are racist it was put to rest when they FREAKED THE FUCK OUT over Nightrunner. At least when they pretend to complain about them changing an established character's race they can blend in with the frothing continuity nerds, whereas when they create an entirely new character who is a black Muslim they just flip out specifically because the character is a black Muslim.
