Enthusiasts of military-style first-person shooters are not well known for their progressive thoughts on the matter of gender. The organizers of a large LAN party in Texas, scheduled to celebrate the launch of Battlefield 3, have decided the best way to deal with any slurs hurled at female gamers is to simply forbid them from attending.

That's Fan-Fucking-Tastic. I'm sure that if there were any girl gamers that liked the EA Battlefield games, they have every right to be pissed off at this. I'm actually embarrassed. It's happening in Texas. So let's get this straight...

How many girls will appear in the Battlefield games? After we answer that question, how many can actually pull their own weight, keep a decent K/D ratio and pwn the guys?

And after all that is answered, let's think about the sausage Spartan orgy that's going to happen after hours just for the sake of conversation.

'Cause seriously, if you're playing your MODURN EFPEESS and you don't bat an eye to the fact that you can get shot thirty-six times or hide behind a small crate for 6 seconds to wipe the blood spattered all over your eyes and magically feel fine again so you can "RAMIREZ, DO EVERYTHING!" Then heaven forbid you [COMMENT EXPUNGED] or feel [Removed] by other lapses of epic realism besides bloom and brown.

In any case, I'm glad I play futuristic games like Half Life Deathmatch and Planetside, where nobody's really cared if I were a girl or not. *shrug* There's assholes in every hobby, just ignore them and play with someone else.

Edit, addition: There's actually quite a few, because gaming, like any other hobby, requires some level of dedication to be proficient, especially at PVP. If you get the typical sterotype of the 15 year old teenyboppers who're only playing Xbawks because their boyfriends own one, then yes, you're not going to see any of that. Of course, same thing with male stereotypes too. You don't see the kind of counterstrike player that the 'Angry German Kid' meme portrays perform well either. Still, I've no illusions that I'm not in a minority, but I don't mind. I also don't care for battlefield 2, but I guess, concievably there's a girl who might, but I don't want to play with her anyway.

It's a common science fact that gamers on Xbox Live, PSN, and most PC games (and quite a few TF2 servers themselves) are filled with egotistical jerks assholes complete utter scumbags that keep jars of testosterone on hand at all times, to regularly inject themselves with each hour.

If you want to be more-than-good at a game, you have to be arrogant as hell and back, and juvenile sexism is part of the overall system of building up your ego as much as possible. Calling people gay while asking them to suck your nether regions is another hypocritical part.

this kind of stereotyping is how we got problems like this in the first place. What it really is, is that PC games have dedicated servers that are easier to manage to discourage poor behavior. Consoles its more of a crapshoot.

I hated sports and not because I was always one of the last 3 to be picked for teams. I'm nearly 21 and I hate the very concept of going to nightclubs. I started playing MMOs at age 12 and I was never one to insult people - except for the one time that I played ragnarok online and the GM team regarded Brazilians as lesser beings with the intelligence of a retarded monkey, but I think calling them racists doesn't exactly count after that.

Wow. I'm with those who misread it first. Then I read Jagos' comment, thought it odd, and re-read the quote. Then I just asked "... what?" It's that slow dawning of the sheer stupidity of this that can't really be happening, yet somehow it is. It's just too much to believe. It's not so much, I think, that I had faith in humanity, as much as it was just too much stupidity to think of. I get what the (presumed) guy was (supposedly) going for, but really this is stupid at best, and ugly and stupid being far more likely.

Personally, I think banning those who bad-mouth others is the best thing. Violence in games doesn't make people violent or stupid, but communities can and do, and this particular LAN party community is doing nothing but reinforcing their own stereotypes and training themselves that ignorance, misogynous behavior, and cruelty are not only acceptable, but preferred, and all who partake in the LAN party are giving the same message to the host. It's literally a community that lowers the intelligence, information, and general over-all well-being of itself by being insular and restrictive.

Eck's comment - while mistaken - does make a decent point. There's nothing wrong with console gaming or console gamers. There's nothing wrong with mild insults or trash-talk... so long as you know that it's for the purpose of entertainment and in good fun, and you leave it when you turn the game off. As a teacher last year, I could honest tell when my guys had been console-gaming by their words and over-all attitude toward one another. They were far more aggressive, rude, and cruel in ways both major and minor because of the community they'd been part of (related: the same would happen when they joined certain non-school sports groups; conclusion: sports make people evil too! ... /sarcasm). I'd have to re-teach them manners and normal, civil behavior just to help them get along with each other and other students.

While this was not console-gaming, and (presumably?) not middle-schoolers, the same thing applies. By creating a community that teaches and encourages ignorance and misogyny, the company is training its customers to behave in manners consistent with that. Similarly, the customers, by partaking in that community, train the company to encourage that kind of behavior.

I grant, of course, that everyone (perhaps, hopefully, most?) who participates does not feel that way (and the company certainly doesn't want to unilaterally drop half of its potential customer base), but the basics still apply... they are training themselves. This is probably the ugliest example of human learning there is. Ew. Try not to get any on you.
