Just a quick thought. Does negative rep ever fall off?

Those are the kinds of questions that get you nega-repped.

Nope. I have two little gleaming red points from Krylo still.
I have a question: Rep is a signed value, right? So it could theoretically overflow to a hugely negative value, and ban a person? Like, if you wanted someone banned, the entire forum could rep them all the time?
I've got nega-rep from Krylo, too. Odd.
But yeah - apparently the story is that the Joe Forumite was able to rep and nega-rep to his hearts content. Then Joe became a cockwalrus and nega-repped for his own nefarious purposes and the Mods removed the option. Now Joe can't nega-rep no body.

Huh, that's a new one. I don't know, actually, but were that both possible and to happen, I reckon we'd quickly notice something was amiss, reinstate that person and then probably take away rep forever since people are bein' huge jerkburgers about it or otherwise tweak it so this couldn't happen again.

I volunteer.
For science.
I was tempted to ask for negative rep for the fun of it a while back. Thought it'd be fun to have a bunch of red gems.

Well Jesus has around 100,000 and that doesn't break anything, and while my computer basics knowledge is so rusty Neil Young's going to name an album after it, if I understand this correctly the next higher value where it could cause problems hovers somewhere around the neighborhood of 2 billion.
So, y'know, have fun with that.

Grey rep is (or used to be?) rep given to you by someone who I think hadn't made enough posts or been a member for long enough for their rep to count either in the positive or negative. I think.

That is correct. It means they think you're cool/a jerk, but they're not important enough for their opinion to matter.

That's interesting... I got grey repped by God.

There is a "promotion" (usergroup change) in the system when we were previously testing out new ways of tracking bad behavior, before the infraction system existed, that would force-ban a person once they reached -40 rep. This was while rep was disabled for users and only available for mods or above.
This is also partially why negative rep is still disabled for users. Also because it is a hidden way to troll people, and could be used and/or abused to rig the reputation scale.

Nega Rep in NPF can also be called Tsundere Rep...

As an aside, I kind of want to know what Kyrlo thinks the REP ME icon ought to actually be used for.
To me, it seems that he thinks it's an icon going, 'NEGAREP ME KRYLO!".

The "rep me" tag was always meant to have that effect.
Mission accomplished.
EDIT: Unrelated: I'm disappointed the Dicks tag never got implemented.

For that to work, every green rep would have to end with "But it's not like I like you or anything, got it!?"

You can only see a certain number* when you are in your CP looking at what people have rep'd you for, if that's what you are asking. This number was increased from the original value, but it will still not show all of them for folks with a significant amount of gems/rep points.
* I don't recall what this number is, but whatever. Count how many you see in your profile and there it is.

vBulletin stores rep as a 32 bit signed integer. If you got 1 neg rep every second it would take 70 years for you to hit overflow. And when you hit the max MySQL will just refuse to increment the value any further.
Barring any setting changes or plug ins reputation has no effect on ban status on a default vBulletin install.
