I haven't read Les Miserables. I'm a starving student, sue me. And whiskey doesn't pay for itself. However, I've checked out a lot of bits from the musical on the YouTubes, as well as grabbing a copy of the Geoffery Rush/Liam Neeson/Uma Thurman non-musical movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oni72Fl7xaw).

But Hugh Jackman (http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=22003) is considering trying out for Jean Valjean, and hey, Russel Crowe (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/12/movies/big-names-join-cast-of-les-miserables-movie.html) is Valjean. (Valjean has the best song I've heard so far, 'Valjean's Intervention.') Emma Watson (http://perezhilton.com/2011-08-26-emma-watson-wanted-for-casting-in-tom-hoopers-les-miserables) and Anne Hathaway (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/will_anne_hathaway_lend_her_pipes_to_les_miserable s_as_fantine/) are rumored to be hanging around as well.

This actually sounds pretty rad. From one of the interchangable Jonas brothers surprising me as Marius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYToP5ZfydE&feature=related) in the 02 London performance of the musical, I'm looking forward to this.

Les Mis is prettystrangein that the book and the musical are both pretty good in completely opposite ways. While having the same basic plot they are prettymuchentirely different. I would guess they are using the musical as the base for the movie which I think will be pretty lame. The musical plays very heavily on the fact that it is a musical and wouldn't work as well as a movie.

First post should say Crowe is Javert. There aren't two valjeans.
Hathaway is Fantine, Helena Botham Carter is Mme T.

Also my friend who is the biggest les mis fan ever is having a right bitchfest at this cast.

With special guest star: Deadpool.

But SMB, why would your friend complain of Hollywood putting today's Hoy Young Stars into a musical period piece about the lower class rising against a corrupt and classist system?

If Rowan Atkinson is not M. Thernadier they are straight up doing it wrong.
