I rarely see any general music threads here, and as a big Music person I'd like to open the floor. Whats everyones preferences?

Me, lately I'm all about the pop-punk. I can't get Fireworks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMDDoJAIL3g) out of my head. The Wonder Years are an amazing band, and local man ruins everything (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-QEAHgYc6g&ob=av3n) has probably the best lyrical pick me ups and one of the funniest videos, and New Found Glory's new album is at the same high standards they've been putting out every 2 years, like clockwork.

what gets you going? anyone been to some good concerts lately?

I've mostly been listening to The Protomen or Dr. Steel lately, but I really have to say:

You LIKE the wonder years? I saw them open for Streetlight Manifesto a whiles ago and GOD they were awful. And they had a terrible attitude, they seemed to be under the impression that it was a punk show, despite the only other acts being ska. They very nearly ruined the show for me except that streetlight is totally boss and saved it.

I wouldn't blame the band for that, they're a pop punk band and played what they knew. They should never have been on the same bill as Streetlight. Have you given their most recent album a listen? I'd call it one of the best of 2011, and Thrice released one this year

Oh my, both are coming across to me as very bland. Something about the toothless punk of The Wonder Years strikes me as bemusing. Listening to this is making me feel like a fourteen year old holed up in my room, pissed off at my parents for not realizing that I can totally be out till 10 and still have time for my homework I mean all my other friends are able to and this is no excuse to not let me go to the mall!

Although that's a somewhat unfair bit of mockery, considering how much I've been enjoying Andrew Jackson Jihad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehFHGrG60GQ) these past few weeks. In terms of my general As Of Late musical tastes, I have been loving the shit out of Menomena, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8eksPdM9e0) since there are too many creative little things being done wonderfully for me to not.

Okay, now that I've got a bit more time, I can actually discuss stuff:

NeedToBreathe - White Fences
Heard about this group via YouTube - they're a.. rock-ish band, I guess. They've got some great songs and good lyrics to go with them.

The John Butler Trio - Ocean
He's an activist hippie stoner who does magic with his guitar. He's also got someone in the trio who plays a digieridoo. (spelling?) He's totally rad, did the last show I went to and actually tries to make the world a better place.

Toxic Airborne Event - All I Ever Wanted
An indie group who plays some good stuff, heard them by chance one day at an HMV. They've got a few YouTube bits up where they do everything with a string section or a xylophone, on what seems to be the staircase to one of the band members apartment buildings. In other words, they're totally awesome.

Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer
A folk band - their better songs are folksie, like Furr and The Man Who Would Speak True. Pretty cool, but I dislike some of their stuff. The good stuff is worth buying an album for, though.

Florence And The Machine - My Boy Builds Coffins
She's just released a new album that I'm getting tomorrow, but her last one, Lungs, is full of great stuff. This one is probably one of the best, but I also like the one that was used as the ending credits tune for Dragon Age II. You know the one.

Crash Kings - Mountain Man
Not a quote from the band, but since it's pretty loud music and I like the quote: "Where our music is welcomed, we will play it loud. Where our music is challenged, we will play it louder." Awesome stuff.

Woodkid - Iron
The song used in the Assassins Creed: Revelations trailer. For some reason I cannae stop listening to this song. I love it. Although I haven't heard anything else from the band.

The Go! Team - Everyone's A VIP To Someone
The Go! Team is an indie group that basically throws whatever onto their discs. They're pretty awesome just because they do what they want, but some of their instrumental tracks are really fun bits.

Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
If you don't listen to Leonard Cohen, I don't wish to know you.

Cage The Elephant - Always Something
A little morbid in this particular piece, but they've got some good stuff like "Shake Me Down." Worth a look.

I didn't mention them before, but Me First And The Gimme Gimmes are really cool, doing covers of old tunes like "The Phantom Of The Opera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8epSdXPco0)," "Puff The Magic Dragon" or "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and turning them into rock and roll. On the other side of the spectrum, Richard Cheese (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNQK3C-ac1w&feature=related) takes metal and turns it into lounge.

And Tegan And Sarah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YksCbcVmTU&feature=player_embedded#!\) are pretty cool sometimes.
