View Full Version : Google hates your eyes

So we all know how terrible Google's recent reformat is, with its hideous black bar, but I went to Youtube today, and well, here's an annotated version of what I saw:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/BitVyper/FuckGoogle.jpg

I'm pretty sure this qualifies as an act of violence against my eyes, as well as psychological abuse. Like what even the fuck? This is hideous and useless. It was bad enough when they kept showing me recommendations in front of all my subscriptions, but now they only do one link per line and it's an eight mile journey to actually see what my subscriptions have posted. Jesus fucking Christ this is ugly.

And what the fuck is up with all the white space? This is fucking Google. They of all people should have some basic grasp of monitor resolutions.

Ugh, every time I look at this I want to vomit.

I don't actually why YouTube or even FaceBook update at all, they served their respective purposes before.

Because they like being dogshit, I guess!

I wouldn't mind the updates if they just bug tested better. Usually changing to something new before they even have last versions errors ironed out

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the known universe who generally isn't annoyed by the changes these sites go through.

Except Facebook's semi-recent chat sidebar monstrosity. That was awful.

the sidespaces are there for the same reason a printed page has margins. Trust me, even if it wasn't a beneficial design element, your eyes would be hurting a hell of a lot more if the website filled the frame.

Youtube changed that format what, a month ago?

And it's not all that bad really.

Yeah I couldn't care less about most of these website changes. If I had to pick one that annoyed me the most it was probably the Kotaku one (coupled with their mobile site flat out breaking for like two weeks or more while they did the switch over).

Yeah I saw it. It still only shows one per line, which is a bitch when you have multiple subscriptions. The layout before the last one lined them all up very nicely so that I could have more than four links to the things I was actually interested in seeing on the page at once.

An Internet site has to update its design at least once a year in order to look like they're hip and with the times. It's exactly as stupid as fashion. Also a big site probably has a bunch of old tenured designers sitting around who need to look like they're doing something. It doesn't matter if you make shit look quantifiably worse or reduce functionality, it's all about keeping up the appearance of not being stagnated.

Yes, for some reason this is the holy grail of professional web design.

I wish I would just get used to all of google's design changes and realize i've been overreacting and they're really actually better once you get used to them and...

But I keep looking at them and nope they just keep on being shit.

Just for shits and giggles...

http://sadpanda.us/images/809028-JD089AE.jpg

As you can see, by the lack of horizontal scroll bar, I seem to lack the "White space" the others have (because of a smaller screen size maybe?)

I tend to watch a lot of videos, so the "Reccomended" ones are actually fairly relevent.

And look: Non-Latin alphabets!

The white space is because of screen resolution. Youtube is set at 1024 width since it's the most common screen resolution. Pretty much every site has empty space on the sides because of that.

God forbid google use the advanced, highly experimental web technology employed by this years-old version of vBulletin to make layouts that flow to fit your window.

EDIT Wow that really is hardset to 1024 from either direction, this is the best evidence i've seen yet that google has some real pure-breed idiot doing its design these days.

A lot of site changes like this are for 2 reasons, the already mentioned GOTTA KEEP DAT SHIT FRESH YO. But also for the fact that layouts like this look better on say...a tablet or iphone. It is a very stupid trend, like people buying Apple products (OH GOD OPINIONS).

What about google design changes? Never seen one. Been a giant search bar in the middle of the screen since forever. The only site more consistent with its design is zombo.com.

As for youtube... yeah. I don't really care but can see the issues some people have. I'm too lazy to fit in and post my yootoob cp or whatever the kids these days call it.

I think the point is that Google owns Youtube, therefore they changed the site.

No they don't. Hell, even standard Google, as shit as its current design is, doesn't do it. The standard search has a wide right margin, but do something like an image search and it uses the entire page. Layouts that fit your resolution, as has already been mentioned, are nothing new. In fact the forced resolution ones have only been cropping up in force in the last couple years, and they've been pretty universally shit.

I mean, this is something geocities sites were able to handle. Geocities.

Edit: I'm gonna call this Youtube layout Ugly Black Bar 2: Son of Ugly Black Bar

The non-stretchability of the main search results is another atrocity.

That shit works correct on the news page still, I wonder when they'll get around to breaking that.

Less "fact" than "unfounded belief of shitty designers".

Static layouts are the antichrist of phone/tablet browsing.

I have some unreasonable hatred for certain site's designs. Basically I hate everything that uses a white background because all that's missing is a blinking cursor and we have a page of MS Word right there. But it is taken to a new level in this very thread.

Youtube has been horrible ever since Google bought it. They got rid of the option to alphabetize your playlists for the longest time but brought it back with the newest layout but you still have to jump through several hoops just to get to it. And if you try to add a video to a playlist with the drop down menu they're not alphabetical so you have to scroll slowly and read every single playlist title until you get to the right one. If you have 200+ playlists this is extremely inconvenient. Also it's ugly as shit. Why the hell wouldn't alphabetical be the DEFAULT way to organize playlists?

And has anyone else noticed videos stalling a lot since the layout change? I'm pretty sure it's not anything on my end.

The hatred in this thread is completely reasoned, with those reasons straightforwardly and clearly stated in pretty much the simplest possible terms.

I don't see how that has anything at all to do with the MS Word phobia or whatever that you felt compelled to share.

I've always thought all of the "1000000PEOPLEAGAINSTNEWFACEBOOK!!!" groups were pretty retarded. This is the first time the new changes are actually kind of annoying me.

Also the latest youtube redesign is pretty bad overall. The previous one was perfectly fine, why do they feel the need to always change shit when it's already working!?

After reading this thread, I cannot wait for NPF's new layout

A Zarkin' Frood

It has to be made in flash and load slowly. We also need very big buttons everywhere but only very little space where we put things. I'd say a maximum of 500 pixels wide of content.

Azisien
01-12-2012, 05:21 PM
could the ajax chat client be merged into like, a third of the layout? Let's say the right side of the screen. And you can't turn it off or remove it, so you HAVE to be logged into the chat.

edit: we need some ear-splitting MIDI music when the page loads!

A Zarkin' Frood
01-12-2012, 05:23 PM
Could the ajax chat's font also be the biggest thing on the site so everyone sees all the stupid dick talk we have there all day?

akaSM
01-12-2012, 05:24 PM
Except for the fact that the chat doesn't work unless you have IE6 so, you're left with a nice error covering 1/3 of your screen. oh, and we'll have those nice flashy ads inbetween each post.

A Zarkin' Frood
01-12-2012, 05:26 PM
These ads need sound and if you use an adblocker you're locked out of the site.

just because I will never get another excuse to tell people this. Youtube once gave me a very odd recommendation.

See awhile ago I clicked on someones my little pony link. So it thought I might enjoy a video of horse breeding. And do be clear, not one about breeding horses, no no no, one of horses in the act of breeding. WHY

Ramary
01-12-2012, 06:15 PM
It was a educational video FOR horse breeders to be, they have to see the process after all.

I wouldn't care all that much, but my biggest frustration is how they have taken away your ability to see what your Youtube friends and so on have uploaded and liked and whatever. It was just fun to see what your buds were into. I mean if I really wanted to I could just subscribe to them and get the same effect but blah blah blah

The inability to turn their stupid recommendations off, though, is pretty legit annoying.

I thought about this thread just moments ago because my mother - who just recently learned you could attach files to emails - went to YouTube and said "I think something's changed here. I don't like it."

I can't wait until they fuck with Google Reader so I can complain about something, since I don't use Youtube enough to complain, and if they've made any major changes to Gmail I didn't notice.

I'd like to complain about Yahoo Mail's new layout which is a bitch to use and glitchy as hell, but that's an entirely different company. Suffice it to say they went from being one of the fastest, simplest email sites to attempting to emulate Gmail in many ways, a terrible mistake.

EDIT: Okay no Gmail is fucking terrible now too. Like there's a bunch of fucking icons instead of words like "delete" and "spam", now there's like, something that vaguely looks like a trashcan next to another thing that vaguely looks like a trashcan next to a pencil, etc. It's taking me a while to figure out what these mean. Which is kind of annoying when it used to just say "delete" or "spam" on the buttons. Also it keeps asking me over and over if the secondary email address I have is correct or not. I keep clicking "yes, this is correct", but it shows it every time I open an email in a big giant box, over and over and over and over and

pochercoaster
01-15-2012, 02:36 PM
Another annoying thing about gmail is that every time I log in it asks me if I want to link my phone number to it in case I lose access to my email. WTF? How is linking my phone number to it secure at all? The contents of my inbox aren't that important. I just wish there was an option for gmail to never ask you again. And no, I don't have my number or address posted on Facebook either, or anywhere else that I can remember.
