So I was trying to import some files into my editing software (pinnacle studio 15 but I also tried windows movie maker) but it cannot import the files, I think because they are MKV does anyone know of a good converter or other work around for this? Oh and I do have video capturing hardware, so I might be able to play the video and record parts manually, but that seems like it would be alot of work so if there is a way around that I'd like to know.

Handbrake is your friend.

HandBrake (http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php) is the best for getting high quality in a small file, it's what I use for stuff like converting DVDs (after ripping them, unless they aren't copy protected) to put some movies in my phone.
It's strongest point is also it's biggest weakness; you get so many options to tinker with, that, you may instantly love it or get confused just as fast.
SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html) is really easy to use and has a ton of formats you can convert to/from. You don't get as many options as you do with HandBrake but, it's good for quick jobs or when you don't want to tweak every setting in your video.

When I try to use handbrake my entire computer turns off (not crashes, literally turns off) at around 30%
Not sure where to click for SUPER, there are alot of ad downloads and I dont want to click on the wrong thing

I use Format Factory. Free, fast, has any conversion I've ever done and plenty of options.

Sorry Aeroz, I thought I had copied the link to the page with the download link. Here's the download link (http://www.erightsoft.org/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe)
Their site may be horrible and confusing but, SUPER is great.
Edit: also, I don't think those links were ads, they're links to info on their site, which, BTW, is the most confusing site I've browsed in my life. Then again, SUPER is awesome.

I managed to get handbrake working on my mac, but ran into a new problem. I tested the converted file and it works fine, but when I imported it into pinnacle studio it had a noticeable de-syncing of the audio as it progresses (only a few minutes in and its noticeable). Not sure how to fix it since the issue is not with the converted file but with the imported one. I think it might have something to do with the framerate. going to try and reconvert, since I think it had a variable frame rate and try to hold it constant. if anyone knows of other methods that might work let me know

...Is it sad that every time I see this thread title on the main page I misread it as "the problem with fire types?" The first time I saw it I wondered why a discussion about Pokemon would be in Computers and Technology. Then I read it again and was disappointed. :(
