Man this show owns so hard, it is just the best.
EDIT: I actually really like the first season because it's still pretty TNG-ish but like a million times better.
EDIT: literally misspelled my own internet name, we are off to a ballin' start here.
EDIT: Avery Brooks is just so angry all the time.

I had a problem getting into it initially. I think it may actually be a side effect of watching it again since it was originally on -- I already know the characters and get annoyed with the slow [likely necessary] pace as we get to know them all. And the whole "lol Emissary" junk wasn't to my liking until it got fleshed out more.
As much as Roddenberry might've spun in his grave about a war in a Star Trek series, all the opportunities it provided to bring in Klingon, Romulan, and Cardassian story elements are aces in my book.
I remember being very happy that O'Brien was a main character. I own TNG, and going through that series he's actually not in it as much as my younger self believed -- well, they didn't have to transport all that often, and La Forge was the Chief Engineer, so... Still, I really like Colm Meany and was glad that the Chief was moved to DS9.
I didn't like Ferengi until I saw Quark.
FFFFF Dukat, that sneaky bastard.

The grand nagus is the best because he knows you hate him and he doesn't care and then Quark's mom seduces him into LIBERAL SOCIAL DEMOCRACY and Quark gets to do the fucking THE LINE MUST BE DRAWN HERE speech which is just fucking amazing.
FFFFF Dukat, that sneaky bastard.[/FONT]
I love how like, every single time he's almost tricked you into liking him, he goes and does some shit where it's like, OH WAYT, THAT'S RIGHT, HE IS FFFFFFUCKS EVIL HOLY SHITCHRIST.
EDIT: see, if I could edit my own thread titles, I could totally wait till this thread hits like page 6, then edit the title to read "Party Thread / Sing Along at Vic's", and that would just... that would just be fantastic

So how many times does Worf single-handedly save the Klingon Empire? Like at least a dozen.
Also yes Quark's speech about the status of his homeworld is great.
Another great moment? Julian and O'Brien, after having been shot inside Sloan's head, having their talk. "I'm just saying, maybe you like me a bit more, that's all."
edit: Yes! Vic is great. He's even better than just a cool guy 'cause he is a hologram who know's he's a hologram and tells it like it is. None of this "trying to escape the holodek" nonsense. Just total class.

He is a PROFESSIONAL.
EDIT: you know you could like never make DS9 now because Kira is straight up a terrorist and the show is totes cool with that.

I haven't watched DS9 in ages but I always thought the best thing Bashir/Obrien friendship. It was one of few tv friendships where I was like "Yep, these dudes are actually friends". They were just shown hanging out and joking around and knew each others foibles rather than just going "these six people are so wacky and hang out, they must like each other... look its in the title!"

Throw in the fact it's the first Trek series that shows any hint of a relationship between the same sex...
And hey, that one episode where the mirror universe actually crossed over into our's...

I'm still running through TNG but DS9 is next on my list to watch. Still trying to decide whether to skip Voyager entirely.

Still trying to decide whether to skip Voyager entirely.
The problem with Voyager is that it has some absolute gems buried in all the mediocrity that it would be a shame to miss, but then you have to sit through all the mediocre episodes to really get them.
Rule of thumb, though, is that most two-part Voyager episodes are really good.

Yes, Voyager does have some good episodes among its full seven seasons. There is a lot of info about the Borg fleshed out throughout, and despite being pulled in for eye candy the Seven of Nine character serves as a great means to further explore the notions of humanity and the characteristics of the crew members. The Doctor is pretty awesome, too.
I tend to skip Kess, Chakotay, and Kazon episodes, but *shrug*.

Jadzia was the most boring character for like half a season and then became amazing.
by-the-by, Terry Farrell has an asteroid named (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/26734_Terryfarrell) after her.

All fine choices, though Kes actually has one pretty cool episode: "Warlord."
The only thing that episode did wrong was not leave her with the psychic ghost of a vicious alien conqueror living in her head, ready to suddenly take control and eviscerate a dude at any moment.

The great thing about Quark is how he's not really greedy so much he BELIEVES in being greedy the way a Catholic believes in like not eating meat on Fridays or whatever, but what he really loves is the ladies.
EDIT: and his nephew, which is just adorable.
EDIT: You know who's great, is Wynn, in that she's really incredibly superhumanly terrible all the time, it's just amazing.

The best Voyager episode was where the dudes they gave Holodecks to came back and you found out that they'd failed their first holodeck malfunction. It was like seeing what happens when you use such broken, dangerous technology without the benefit of plot contrivance to save you.

It's great how any episode involving a holosuite where you see a holo person there is at least one scene of whichever regular person going like BUT DON'T YOU KNOW that you are A HOLOGRAM, A MERE SIMULACKSRUM and hologram being like 'yeah, so?' or 'what's that? shut up, honky' or staring blankly for as econd and then bein like 'so wanna fuck?' again.
EDIT the episode that ended with holosuite kira's body with holosuite Quark's head was just fantastic.

DS9 was great for having legitimately sexy ladies who were also not whimpering ninnyhammers and then sticking Armin Shimmerman's head on their shoulders.
And also for featuring the absolutely least irritating appearances of Lwaxnna Troi!

I was referring to Deanna when I said 'Ninnyhammer' so it still fits.
Hey, if the Doctor from Voyager said 'Freeze program' when he was in the Holodeck, would the computer freeze him as well, assuming he had been transferred to the Holodeck and not using his mobile emitter?
EDIT: Or what if he said 'delete program' or whatever screws up the make-believe holodeck technology? That's mess him up for good right?

I really enjoy how hellish abysmal economically destitute hopeless collapsed society of 2023 is like... in many respects less bad than right now.

Remember when Lwaxanna comes BACK after that one good Lwaxanna episdoe and in the second one she's fuckin pregnant and ropes in Odo as her manly defender from her fuckin' nuts crazy husband?
God, that was really, really bad.

Hey, Voyager and DS9 shared an episode long enough for Quark to be Quark cursorily: relevance established.
I really enjoy how hellish abysmal economically destitute hopeless collapsed society of 2023 is like... in many respects less bad than right now.
Wasn't the point that they solved some of their hellish abyss problems with the ghetto solution, which itself turns out to be a different hellish abyss problem?
But seriously, holograms and violent Klingon sex (which might be redundant in two different ways) aren't exactly DS9's shiniest moments. Except for Quark's violent Klingon sex, amirite?
It's great that DS9 is never threatened of takeover by Baron Harkonnen because someone tried to play Dune in the holosuite, it really is. But considering Vic, it's not that it doesn't happen, it's just that Quark only stocks up on holoprograms with rubbish AI.

"Bar Association" is just such a fantastic episode. I'm really unsure if the main story of two brothers on opposing sides of the struggle of a fledgling union against the corrupt Ferengi corporatocracy or the side story of Worf utterly failing to adjust to life away from his idyllic experience aboard Starfleet's safest, most advanced flying space hotel is more engaging.
Like, what's more awesome? Rom quoting Karl Marx outta nowhere or Odo having a PADD pre-loaded with every one of the Enterprise's security breaches, waiting for the moment that Worf started bitching at him about his job performance? I can't decide!
Fifthfiend
03-11-2012, 05:26 PM
I like to think that Odo has that list for everybody.
EDIT: I also enjoy how Quark is always having babyfits about how he's not rich or important enough but like basically going by the terms of the deal he has with the federation that Sisko lays out in this episode he has like zero actual business costs except employee wages and pretty much has to be operating at something like a 100% profit margin.
EDIT: And owns six holosuites which is basically like owning infinite universes times six.

And then I saw the episode where Future Odo straight-up genocides like eight thousand people out of love for Kira and then they never, ever discuss that little wrinkle of how their relationship started again.

It occurs to me that any time i go on about how great Quark is the first thing people say as a response (that isn't 'man yeah he is') is like "man but what about the SEX CHANGE EPISODE" so I have basically resolved to like, never watch that episode because holy shit do I even have to explain why nothing will ever, ever make me watch that?

Actually TBH i probably would have been down with this a couple months ago but i've hit my point with this show where from like the title and or first three minutes of any episode I remember like everything that happened in it so like what i'm sayin here is i'm pretty saturated on it.
...Actually I'd probably still be down for that though like uh... for any of the garak episodes, or maybe one of the really good quark episodes, those are basically the best.
...or one of the ones where Avery Brooks goes WAR and the Federation goes BUT WE'RE THE FEDERATION but Avery Brooks goes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR
