View Full Version : When is 8-Bit Theater coming back.

No, seriously.

Because every other webcomic online makes me want to gouge my eyes out in boredom. Either they have no plot or story to them, or they're not funny, or they often don't have a single joke in the entire page. Sometimes they'll take several pages just to crawl half an inch forward in the story. Yes I'm talking about LookingForGroup.

ADVENTURERS! used to satisfy the funny, fast moving and plot-based webcomic. 8-Bit Theater took that over spectacularly with it's numerous jokes per strip and hilarious, well-written cast and characters you cared about. There's literally nothing else in their particular webcomic niche. :(

Chance are, it's not.

Brian's moved on to other projects.

And thank god for that. While 8-bit was obviously what originally drew me to this place, Brian's other projects are, just, better. Like that's obviously my opinion, but I feel like we got everything we could out of 8-bit and it's better for all of us if Brian now concentrates on other stuff. Not to mention the man has to eat, and 8-bit ain't gonna bring food to the table.

In case it wasn't obvious, the main purpose of this topic is: "Is there ANY other webcomic out there that fills the ADVENTURERS/8-Bit Theater niche?" :P

No, nothing else worth reading exists anywhere. Now go back to being bored like the rest of us.

Might be better to ask that in the Media forum then, if you want my suggestion.

Aside from my own, I've never really been able to get into another webcomic either, actually...Or well, not to the degree that I was into 8-bit (I've read a few since, so it's not like I haven't tried anything).

I'm trying to capture the "spirit" of 8-bit in The Dreadful. What with the fantasy setting and the cast of not-exactly-heroic characters and such. Still, my comic suffers the handicap of not being Final Fantasy based and not being 10 years old yet.

BUT we'll get there! Not with the Final Fantasy part, because that's copyright infringement, but the "10 years old" part might be something I can do. It depends on how much fun I have with it and where I am in life by then.

EDIT: I can say with almost 100% certainty though that 8-bit is NOT coming back. It's a waste of time to even worry about it.

A very subtle little plug for Dreadful there.

Well, Meo, if you want fighting, jokes, and regular updates, there's always Dr. McNinja. It isn't as dense as 8-bit, but it's just as weird. Or, you could try Cucumber Quest, if the comic just has to be based on old RPG videogames. Not that Cucumber Quest is based on a particular game, but it's based on the idea of old console RPGs.

Or, for something very different from 8-bit, have you tried reading Wondermark?

I hate to be the first person in the thread to say "Let me tell you about Homestuck" but let me tell you about Homestuck.

Check out Erfworld, Its one of the few I consistently check. Captain SNES if you love sprite comics (ITS NOT DEAD YET!)

My personal favorite webcomic is Gunnerkrig Court, but it really shares no particular similarities to 8-bit at all so it may not be up your alley.

Since you were kind enough to bring up this discussion, I recommend that you only follow VG Cats, forever. Nothing else.

There's a reason there aren't any more comics like that. There was like, one good one and the rest was so terrible that you'd rather die in a fire than reading them. If it's sprite comics you're looking for, there's one I enjoyed aside from 8-Bit, Kid Radd (http://www.bgreco.net/kidradd/), but story and setting-wise it's completely different from 8-Bit. It's also finished. One of the very few webcomics of exactly the right length. Possibly the only one.

Ullgh...threads like this make me feel like such a failure, sometimes...

EDIT: "What webcomic should I read?" "Well, pretty much any that aren't on this site." :(

Ah well. I guess I'll just keep going unless someone tells me otherwise :)

I have fun with it. Still, I'm always up for suggestions. There's no reason the only active comic on this site should be a bore if it can be helped.

My apologies Speroni, I could be fair and actually give The Dreadful a shot, I haven't read it and thus cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone.

Relax, Dreadful is cool and you suggested it yourself. It's not like everyone has to repeat it to make it more true.

EDIT: Yeah, check out Dreadful it's pretty good, especially recently.

EVERYONE SHOULD REPEAT IT

foreverandeverandever......

Anyway, I'm still open for suggestions and stuff.

Don't worry, we just didn't mention Dreadful because it's awesomeness is automatically implied. No need to mention it.

I'm going to assume the above statement is completely true and is shared by everyone everywhere.

To be fair the webcomic I mentioned only exists in my head so that's pretty hard to compete with.

So. It's come to this.

I suppose I'll just be conventional and recommend either Homestuck or The Order of the Stick.

It's best not to recommend Homestuck. I mean, okay, recommend Homestuck it's a fun comic, but you have to be immune to fanboy-itis. The Homestuck fandom is among the worst. I'm not just talking the official forums, but even the thread here on NPF. I dare you to look inside of it? Just a bunch of crazies throwing around non-sense words. If your reading experience is improved by not sharing thoughts with fellow readers that's a pretty bad sign.

I did something with pails and your lusus, matespit, or whatever, I don't even know. (E: Because their faces look very much alike)

I wouldn't say the Discussion thread here is very bad (most of the time), but if you do get into Homestuck it probably is recommended that you generally shy away from the larger pockets of the fandom such as the MSPA forum or Tumblr (you should avoid Tumblr in general).

MSperoni

I've tried three separate times to get into MSPA/Homestuck and just can't.

I read Order of the Stick for awhile then tuned out, then I tried reading McNinja and it was about the same (though out of the ones I've read that was my favorite just because it was so stupid).

I actually don't read ANY comics these days... Except Robo, and that's less "reading" and more "studying". Comics just aren't very fun for me unless I am making them myself.

If you like Exalted and the Order of the Stick, try Keychain of Creation!

It's basically Order of the Stick with Exalted, but that does not do it justice at all.

And it's on indefinate hiatus, sniff.

I forgot to mention, and I dunno why I forgot to mention it, but I like reading Rice Boy (http://www.rice-boy.com/see/index.php)...it's really not like 8-bit at all, but it's fun to read and very unique.

Wellllllllllllll, I can't believe I'm even posting this, but maybe a year ago there was this webcomic that I started. It was heavily inspired by 8-bit Theatre and Brian's premise of "heroes that actually aren't."

It was called "Explosean (http://www.skullkrab.com/comic/?p=6)," and featured basically a sociopath for a super hero, embezzling off the unknowing city under his protection. Juxtaposed to him was a brilliant mad scientist as a super villain, with political aspirations for making the world a legitimately better place.

The funny thing is, I actually remember approaching Matt Speroni via email to see if would want to be the paid series artist, but it didn't end up happening. I think he saw my email a few weeks later after it had been sent or something, after I had already went ahead with someone else, another talented artist named Lenny DeStefano.

Anyway, the comic had a good run for the summer of 2009 (minus the first three or so pages where I was figuring out the lettering as I went.) but then the "Russian Hackers," attacked and brought down my original site, and I was unable to return it to its former glory, so I posted the pages on some crummy temporary site to hold them over until such a time when the website could be fully restored.

In the meantime, other stuff was happening. I joined the circus as a fire spinner, and Lenny started working on a flash cartoon (which is awesome, by the way.) I guess we kinda just stopped. We'd probably go back to Explosean someday, when both our lives allow for it... but yeah, I guess webcomics for me took a spot on the back burner in favour of twirling fire balls around.

Anyway, if you guys wanna read it, I posted the link above. Apologies for the craptasticness of the site... again, not how it was meant to be viewed. I'm thinking if people like it/think it's good, then... iono, maybe it'd be the kickstart I need to get back to making comics again. I'm definitely no Brian, but it might make for a good placebo.

Oh yeah, and if you're on this board and haven't read The Dreadful... doooo eet. It actually IS really good, Matt's selling himself a bit short there.
