View Full Version : A Suggestion for Brian Clevinger

I think when you start 8-Bit Theater 2 you should totally bring back Black Belt. He was the best character, and I was super sad when he died. :( My favorite part was how he got lost in hallways. ^_^

Also, do you have any plans for when you're going to get started on 8-Bit Theater 2? I think someone was saying you were going to after you finished Atomic Robo, which makes me happy because Atomic Robo just isn't as good as 8-Bit to be honest. Sorry. :(

P.S. How far along are you on writing Atomik Age?

Make it so that when they were at the temple of fiends and BM used the helldoken, BB was reanimated by its dark energies and is now a vampire. He can bite WM and make her his vampire queen.

I think BB probably isn't dead because if you think about it Kary had to cut him a whole bunch to kill him, but petrified BB only had a bit of the top of his skull missing.

He then steps from the armoire of invincibility with sword-chucks...

Personally, I would prefer it if BM were to finally get some real, three dimensional character development when you start working on 8BT2. I mean, after all, BM wrote that heartfelt letter to WM and that obviously showed that there was a shred of decency looking to grow, but then it never did and he just stayed the same "evil for the sake of evil" joke over and over again until you took a hiatus to work on your side projects.

It was all very one note and just plain bad writing. What would have been better is if he were able to develop into a cool antihero like Venom or Spike. It's really the obvious way to go and the fact that you haven't done it yet can only mean that it's what you have planned for when you get back to your main project, and I know I speak on behalf of everyone when I say that you need to get back to that soon or we're all going to stop reading 8BT entirely, and I'm sure you don't want to lose that source of income.

Yeah, nothing Brian's ever done is going to top 8-bit, especially not these other stupid comics on the site (especially that totes stupid Western one).

I think for 8-bit 2 there needs to be something with Black Mage and Kefka where like they're long lost brothers/twins and they go fight crime but are actually crime sorta like that comic where Baron Zemo was pretending to be a hero but I can't remember what it was called and there needs to be a part where White Mage falls in love with Locke but Thief says no and then goes to steal some money so he can pay a gangster to create a magic storm cloud that will rain all over Corneria but then King Steve takes a gun and shoots left hand man Gary II who replaced left hand man Gary I and then left hand man Gary III because left hand man Gary III was more of a right hand guy and King Steve couldn't tolerate that and then Evil Princess Sarah gets naked because she's hot but Red Mage dressed like a girl and sneaks a peak at her boobs and then Black Mage and Kefka come in and summon Knights of the Round to destroy Elf Land but Yuffie who was there stealing materia manages to save the king who is Thief and her and Thief and Red Mage go steal a super materia that has ultima which they use on Black Mage and Kefka but it doesn't work but instead revives Chaos and then the Dark Warriors show up to try to stop it and then Bikkie throws up because he's eaten too many cheetohs and that makes Chaos laugh and when Chaos laughs that opens up whole new dimensions which pulls in ancient horrors and Aeris gets stabbed but she's dumb so I don't care Yuffie is the best and then Squall and Fighter have a fight with swords but Fighter wins because Fighter is the best and finally a big brown guy with lips and a tight headband runs out and he fights and everyone thinks he's' Black Belt. That's the first 100 pages.

So Brian should make that because...Everything else here is dumb.

8BT2 should follow the plot of the second Final Fantasy. Or at least Brian should claim that this is what he does because no one will notice if he isn't. FF2 was so shit no one could have possibly sat through the whole game.

I honestly don't think any sequel series will ever capture the magic the original 8-bit theater had. And the plot really didn't have any loose ends to tie up (except how King Steve magically turned black).

Besides, the series took up a whole decade of Brian's life. It doesn't feel fair to ask him to start the series up again, when he's probably sick and tired of its legacy eclipsing everything else he's ever done. Just a guess.

Oh wait, Brian's down with this?

Well in that event, things I wanna see are:

-BM becoming a Juggalo, or at least thinking that ICP is a legitimate religion. This would go well with him being BFs/brothers with Kefka.

-Bikke singing or referencing Alestorm songs

-Priest, Shaman and Healer getting more character development, and maybe WM's group would act as new rivals to the Light Warriors.

-Some dubious explanation to what happened to Thief's Elf King dad.

-Vilbert learning to sparkle so he can attract hordes of fan girls, then regretting it ever since.

-More references to odd/obscure fantasy franchises like Discworld, Disgaea, Okage Shadow King, World of Quest....hey, I just know I had an ecstasy of delight when Bikke referenced Pirates of Dark Water.

-Oh, and NO comebacks please. I want death to hold SOME meaning here, I DON'T want a repeat of Bob and George's cattle excrement.

Spoiler Alert: The Dreadful is actually 8-bit Theater 2 this whole time.

You may bash your own story telling skills, but you have a supreme talent for omake type strips. I also know you get lots of hate-mail for The Dreadful not being 8-Bit2. Combine these two things into a joke strip and actually make this a thing.

If you did this you would be my hero forever.

MSperoni

I've never gotten any hate mail about The Dreadful. I've gotten a couple Emails regarding it, but they've been positive (I had hoped to be getting more fan mail by now but I really don't get much at all. Like two or three in the past year and 100+ pages :( ).

I've gotten hate posts about it in NPF though. And I got some hate-mail regarding the Epiclogue but that's all.

I just shrug it off. It bothers me a lot more to get nothing than something. I get enough posts here on NPF to make me think I'm doing a decent job but I still don't feel like I've made much of a splash yet. It seems like more people on the site are talking about every webcomic except the one that's actually still being posted on the site. I really wanna try to turn that around, but I don't know how (or even if it's possible. And if it is possible whether I have the talent to do it.).

I don't know how many hits the pages get when they update, Brian is the one who holds all that information. All I can go by is forum-buzz.

I guess all I can do is try to do the best job I can and keep working to improve it. Hopefully it will hit with more and more people as time goes by. I think maybe if I start introducing more characters that might help. It seems the most successful webcomics have a relatively large cast and feature stories revolving around multiple people. The Dreadful really only focuses on one person at a time, so maybe that's where it is coming up short.

Unfortunately I can't experiment with Chapter 5 since I'm almost done with it, so I'll have to apply this "more character" theory in Chapter 6.

Actually, I'm pretty sure we get more Dreadful posts here than about any specific comic other than MSPA. I mean, we needed an aggregated thread for pretty much every comic that isn't MSPA just to have somewhere to discuss them. As for why there's more MSPA posts? Have you seen how much that thing updates? Sometimes several times a day. It's mildly terrifying. There are thousands and thousands and thousands of pages of MSPA to discuss.

Anywho, TL;DR: We talk about your comic more here than any comic that doesn't update at somewhat upsetting speeds. I'd say that's pretty good! :)

So it's probably not 1/20th as bad as I think it is. Seems like this kinda mentality is the same in most artists/writers though. At least that seems to be the case in everyone I talk to. I can't imagine being perfectly satisfied, it would be a very weird feeling.

The Dreadful is great. One of my favorite webcomics. The art, obviously, is top notch. The writing may not be as tight as Brian's stuff is now, but go read the first 107 pages of 8-bit Theater. Then go read your comic again. You're doing fine.

Man, I keep plugging your stuff to colleagues all the time.
But then I mention the website and they're all either: "But you said it was a comic!" or "I don't read webcomics!".

And then I explain to the first group what a webcomic is, and they just don't think it's interesting. And I explain to the second group that it's just a regular comic... except it's posted on the internet, and they just look at me like I'm making water burn.
