I wonder if he'll try and convince everyone that he was about to say 'niggardly' or something.

Already, Santorum's support base is rallying behind him. (http://ricksantorum-2012.tumblr.com/)
He didn’t actually say nigger. Even if he did, so what? He didn’t mean it. Liberals are just looking so hard to find something wrong with Rick. People make mistakes. Move on.

I’d be upset but Obama said WORST things in his books!!
I genuinely don't know what to say.

I'm betting on "You're the ones who are racist. You wanted Rick to say the n-word so much that you heard him say it. He said nothing of the sort. You have no one to blame but yourselves for thinking you heard him say something he didn't."
(it's the sorta the same argument Lucas used when he explained how we all just thought we saw Han shoot Greedo first).

Rick actually was going to say "government negotiator" because he couldn't think of the word "diplomat". I'm relieved. I'm also alarmed that my liberal ways would assume such a racist thing. I need to read my bible more, obviously.

03-30-2012, 10:39 AM
You guys are all be facetious and such, I get that, but seriously, I don't even see how the word you're accusing him of almost using even fits in context with the sentence he was saying. "[Obama is an] anti-war government n--"? Doesn't even make sense. Not a context in which you'd expect that slur to be applied, if you were dealing with someone from whom you'd expect such a slur.
Regardless of whether Santorum is the type to use racial slurs, I don't see it here. What am I missing?
Loyal

Because that's how he sees America! Not as e pluribus unum, not as, "out of many, one". But a country that is broken, that needs to be unified by a powerful government, that makes everybody... get the same. Because then, it's fair.
That is Barack Ovama's [sic] vision for America. It is why he proposes the bills he proposes. It is why he whispered - off-camera, he thought - saying "just give me a little space, we'll take care of this - after the election."
We know... we know the candidate, Barack Obama, what he was like. The anti-war, government ??? - the... America was a source for division around the world... that what we were doing was wrong, that we needed to pull out, pull back.Like, I dunno which of these makes more sense to you, Ryan, or if you have a different suggestion for something he might have said. But it seems to me that it'd make sense for Santorum to call Obama a "government something" (such as "government stooge") just after declaring that Obama wants the government to have a lot of power, and why not a racial slur from the guy who pretty much runs his campaign platform on bigotry.
Ryanderman
03-30-2012, 11:12 AM
Because bigotry can be excused. It's not racist to associate black people with poverty and crime, because there's data to back that up. It's just facts.
^ See that there. That was an excuse for racism. I don't actually think that.
Racist thinking and views of the world can be excuse and explained away as not actually racist by the people that hold them. But a racial epithet can't be. It's unequivocally racist. And unless someone actively hates other races in an acknowledged way, I can't see them using a racial epithet that vile. Whatever Rick Santorum is, I think he thinks of himself as fair person who is not racist, and doesn't hate anyone. So I can't see him using that slur. Unless there's clear evidence he did, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on that at least. I don't know what he was trying to say, but I think it among the least likely of options.
EDIT: Anyway, I don't know. Maybe you're all right. Could very well be. Just seemed unlikely to me, so I chimed in.

Actually it makes perfect sense in the context of that sentence given that "nigger" is used as a possession as much as a person i.e. "I'm not your nigger". Calling him an anti-war, government nigger would be grammatically correct.
He may have been trying for something else and stumbled but I doubt it. My point is, trying to say that it doesn't fit in the context of the sentence is false.
MSperoni
03-30-2012, 12:26 PM
...if you have a different suggestion for something he might have said...
Clearly he was about to take a page from Herman Cain and make a Pokemon (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nidoran%E2%99%80_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29) reference, but he figured no one else would get it so he stopped before he made a nerd of himself.
EDIT:
Santorum's not really earned "benefit of the doubt" status with me, so I'm assuming he was about to drop an n-bomb. "Negotiator" is the only alternative put forth that MIGHT make sense, but when you look at the context of what he was saying, it doesn't fit. As Loyal pointed out, it would make more sense for some sort of insult to follow "government" (government-stooge, government-puppet, government-lackey, etc).
EDIT2: Also, if he was going to say "negotiator" all along then why didn't he say "negotiator" after his little stutter?
Karrrrrrrrrrrresche
03-30-2012, 12:44 PM
Even if he was going to say something to that effect "Compromiser in Chief" or something would be better to indicate what he means. Despite the rallying against the idea of diplomacy in the right "Diplomat" and "Negotiator" are, as far as I'm aware still considered good things.
To say "Negotiator" there seems to be a shift in tone.
Ryanderman
03-30-2012, 12:56 PM

I heard it with clean ears late last night on my news audio stream- and yeah, everyone turned with the look of, "Did he really just say..."
Edit: I mean word for word verbatim, I want you to say "Anti-War Government Nig", then cut yourself off, and say "uhhh".
Edit 2: Wait I think there was one of those little half cough, clear your throat things, but it was fairly short.

This is one instance where I support the prosecution of thoughtcrime. It's not the fact that he said, or almost said a bad word, but the fact that we can prove he thinks about people in these terms at all which should disqualify him from work in public office. There's just no going back after a slip like that, it's no different from slipping on the ground and falling and biting your tongue off. Face it, Mr Sanatorum, it's time to resign gracefully.
Also, wow, I didn't think people could actually seriously stand on a podium and make the "He's saying America has problems, therefore he's wrong" argument and not get a faceful of tomatoes.

I'm actually willing to believe the botched "Negotiator" version of the story if only because I can't bring myself to believe a politician would seriously plan on using "nigger" in a speech. Like, even at the hight of segregation politicians usually said "Negro" or "Colored" or something like that.

Also, many people find "colored" and "Negro"* just as offensive.

The Spanish wouldn't find the word Negro offensive, since that's the color black in Spanish. MOVING ON.
Anyhow, I think the fact that he stuttered stopped, and just completely changed direction and tone was damning. It wasn't a stutter, it was an, "Oh shit change the subject quick."

The Onion is apparently prescient when it comes to their satire: (http://www.theonion.com/articles/rick-santorum-relieved-no-one-has-asked-him-about,27630/)
Rick Santorum Relieved No One Has Asked Him About Interracial Marriage Yet
LAFAYETTE, LA—Saying his campaign has "really dodged a bullet so far," Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told reporters today that, much to his relief, no one has asked his opinion on interracial marriage. "No question about it, what I'd have to say about the topic would absolutely terrify anyone with a conscience," said Santorum, adding that his longstanding and carefully thought-through views on whether two individuals of different races should be allowed to marry would put him so far out of the mainstream that it’d be "hilarious how insane [he]’d sound." "The truth is, if anyone decided to ask me flat out if I approve of marriages between black men and white women, for example, the flood gates would open and the bile I would spew would sink this campaign in 10 seconds tops." As of press time, reports of Santorum's mere reference to his incendiary views had caused his favorability ratings in Alabama and Mississippi to skyrocket.
