View Full Version : Spring 2012 Anime thread: Welcome home, Space Cowboy

So there's a lot of new shit coming up which I'm not gonna bother to summarise, (http://randomc.net/2012/03/29/spring-2012-preview/) but there are some shows which do deserve a more thorough look:
Eureka Seven AO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IYpivWPcPU)
The 13-year-old protagonist, Ao Fukai lives with an elderly doctor, Toshio, on Iwado Island in Okinawa. His father's whereabouts are unknown and his mother had disappeared 10 years ago. His childhood friend, Naru Arata is somewhat frail, physically, and requires an inhaler; however, she seems to have "yuta" power due to an accident that happened when she was very young.
A mysterious entity called "Secret" suddenly appears and launches an attack on the Scub Coral lifeform on the island. In his fervent desire to protect the island, Ao launches a certain military robot called "Nirvash" aboard a Japanese military transport.
Why you should care
It's a new Eureka Seven and I heard some of you like that shit. It's probably gonna suck to be fair.
Lupin the Third: The Woman Named Fujiko Mine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvq49SuUcJ4)
The series revolves around the character of Fujiko Mine, depicting her and the rest of the Lupin III cast during their younger days. The series will reportedly capture the "sensuality" present in Monkey Punch's original Lupin III manga in its "daring interpretation" of the franchise.
Why you should care
Director: Saya Yamamoto (Michiko e Hatchin)
Also there will be plenty of T&A.
Saint Seiya Omega (https://youtu.be/4_gQf5sfGtk)
The storyline of Omega takes place in the future era, 25 years after the Holy Wars of the 20th century narrated in the original manga and its anime adaptation. The goddess Athena is still on Earth after reincarnating to cleanse it of the agent of evil as she has done during millennia, accompanied by her Saints, fulfilling her duty of protecting peace on Earth, after her victories over antagonistic deities. Athena and a new generation of Saints prepare to face a new menace that lurks in this new era, in which Pegasus Seiya, the protagonist of Kurumada's manga, is revered as a Saint of legend.
Why you should care
Character Design and Animation Director: Yoshihiko Umakoshi (Doremi, Heartcatch Precure, Casshern Sins, Yumekui Merry, the best Naruto episodes)
If nothing, it should be a visual spectacle. I'm not expecting much in terms of relevance to the original series (it's aired at 6AM in Japan, so do not hope for bloody combat and the violence that made the original popular), but such limitations haven't held Umakoshi before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b19yWkHELRM).
Kids on the Slope (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8owoGJntHJw)
Nishimi Kaoru has moved from city to city and school to school because of his father’s job. So the first day at his new school was just routine for him. Being intellectual and the new transfer student, he has always been seen as an outcast and all Kaoru had to do was bare it until the next time he moved. But things were slightly different this time. First, he started to get close to the class president, Mukae Ritsuko, and, secondly, unlikely as it seemed, grew closer to Kawabuchi Sentaro. Sentaro was infamous for getting into fights, skipping class and was an overall bad boy. Strangely enough, the three of them find common ground in music, namely jazz, and Kaoru finds himself actually enjoying the new town.
Why you should care
Director: Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Baby Blue)
Music: Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus, Earth Maiden Arjuna)
Probably the best piece of evidence we have that Ikuhara did save animu with Penguindrum. What's up with all the great directors of yore coming back anyway?
Should all in here suck shit we can fall back on Korra. That's like anime. Actually it's better than most anime.

I've been reading Eureka Ao's comic. It doesn't piss me off, and I liked this month's chapter, so I continue to be optimistic about the new cartoon.
I'm really looking forward to Saint Seiya, even though I've only watch a few minutes of the original series. See, because it airs alongside Smile Precure, and Smile has been lacking in magic kung-fu (not to it's detriment, but still). So, if I can get magic fighting from Saint Seiya, then Sunday is without a doubt the best day of the week.
I was gonna watch Sakamichi no Apollon just becuase Liz said I had to, but then I saw this preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8owoGJntHJw) and now I'm watching it because, hey, at least the music will be good.
Uchuu Kyoudai is about being an astronaut and being an astronaut's worthless brother. The comic got some awards or something.
And Fate/Zero's finishing up, so there's that.
I'm gonna watch Uchuu Kyoudai simply because Swery65 likes the manga.
Also, Dom and I are watching Galaxy Express 999.

The movie or the TV series? If so, are you watching it online somehow? I ask because I've been looking into this series and Lupin the 3rd and while I found a Lupin TV series DVD at my local comics nerdatorium, I couldn't find Galaxy Express 999 except for the movie and some other later stuff, and I'd like to see the original TV series if I can.

Persona 4: The Cartoon 25: At least it is well animated for once. The problem is that you cannot translate a turn-based RPG battle into this medium and expect it to hold the same impact as it did before. No attacks hold any weight, and there's no pattern to how or why the battle ends up developing.
Being honest, I fist-pumped when Reach Out to the Truth started playing. And Charlie Tunoku is a true bro.
Persona 4: The Cartoon FIN: The video game was better. The only reason I kept up with this cartoon is because I love Inaba and its inhabitants, and in that respect I was satisfied. Trying to adhere too much to the source material was P4:TC's flaw. On the other hand, the times it truly shone were when it took silly video game stuff like social linking and played with their nature. Fanservice at its best, but ultimately just a dressing for the main course. 3/5I was gonna watch Sakamichi no Apollon just becuase Liz said I had to, but then I saw this preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8owoGJntHJw) and now I'm watching it because, hey, at least the music will be good.

I know it's not really "new" anime, but I have been watching a few series on Netflix to pass the time while I grind RPGs on my PSP (GODDAMN YOU GOOKING, DROP YOUR SWORD.) and Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne was pretty good, if a bit short.
Also, been watching El Cazador de le Bruja as well. Fairly entertaining.

i got a Glimpse of Saint Seiya Omega on youtube, specially the leaked Opening...
It's interesting... it totally has a huge Digimon/Bakugan vibe to it... but i'm ok with it so far... i'll give it a go, because i always enjoyed everything in this unniverse and the animation really seems good. I just hated the new Armor designs...

Rurouni Kenshin: Shin Kyoto Hen Part 1
http://i.imgur.com/tDQop.gif
Pros:
It's more Kenshin.
Misao is fucking moé, man.
The choreography is awesome.
They used music from the original show.
Cons:
This material has been covered before.
You cannot just expect to cram who knows how many volumes of the manga in forty-five minutes and expect it to work.
Where's my fucking Jinchuu arc?
The funniez:
People complaining about the cloth designs in Saint Seiya Omega should look at all the popped-collar trenchcoats in Kenshin; Nobuhiro Watsuki's fashion sense was very anachronistic. The nineties?
Space Bros 01
As a big brother this hit me very hard. :( Also, who would have thought Zidane's headbutt would continue to have repercussions in 2025?
Mirai Nikki 24
It was stupid before, now they are just trying too hard. The script is honestly laughable at this point.
Saint Seiya Omega 01
http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/092/f/6/saint_seiya_omega_kouga_by_tristtrist-d4utweh.gif
Went in expecting the worst after all the pacing complaints, but came out pleasantly surprised. I ended up liking Kouga a lot despite all the flags signaling all the tropes he's gonna cover by the end of the show. He's just a much more empathetic character than Seiya ever was, and it even gave some leeway for some obligatory world-building exposition.
Animation-wise it was superb, as per Umakoshi. It hasn't blown my expectations yet, but it was thoroughly entertaining.
Basically: Heartcatch Precure 01 for boys.
fake edit: I am very relieved that the level of violence hasn't been toned down for the airtime, gore amount aside.

Holy crap the new Rurouni Kenshin is released already?! I missed!!
As for Omega, there are a few problems with the animation (right at the start, they forget to draw Seiya's wings during one scene...) but other than that is very nicely done. Being a big fan of the whole Series (still waiting for the third part of Lost Canvas) i'm interested to see where they go with this... Omega is clearly the "Tenkai Hen" that never got made, it's a direct sequel of the original saga!

Well, it is Toei. Their budgets are minuscule considering they get almost all their funding solely through toy sales.
On the other hand, they are not above spending one episode's worth of dough on a minute-long animation sequence. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1fxff9LeEo)

Tera. Trust me as someone who read the Mirai Nikki manga.
You can not comprehend how bad it fucking gets from this point on.
ANYWAY. Short first impressions
Space Bros: Looks really good so far, good balance of funny and drama.
Lupin: Clearly this is more based on manga Lupin then the older shows, so I hope to see just how much "Lupin is a total bastard in the manga" shows up in this. The art and animation is really good. Also TITS EVERYWHERE.
Medaka Box: Cause Karesh always ALWAYS talks about the manga I picked it up. It seems Medaka herself is the worst part of it so far, but I am told that is exactly how it works.
Also picked up Moretsu Pirates from last season, it has both hilarious bad/stupid parts and genuinely good bits which is a good mix for me, BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIX YOUR PACING SHOW.
Also gonna pick up F/Z's 2nd half, Mysterious Girlfriend X (liked the manga, even if it had it's shitty arcs) and Eurkea Seven AO even though it will, chances are, be shit.

Oh, I'm still enjoying it. It's just that I cannot care for any of the fuckers anymore because this shit has never tried to have any semblance of seriousness so instead of being wowed I'm laughing at the trash.
Polar Bear Café 01: Very relaxing if slightly dull. I will keep watching it for the animal hijinx (FUCK YOU I'M AN ANTEATER), but I can see the humour becoming tiring after a while.
Lupin the Third: ( o ) ( o ) 01: Move over Umakoshi, this is good animation with a not-barebones script and direction. Also tons of boobs. It reminds me of all the 007 movies I never watched mixed with a bit of Cowboy Bebop. Warning: you really shouldn't watch it with other people at home.
Medaka Box 01: Poor GAINAX. They even have to zombify Kamina in order to try to elevate this tripe. :( It was awful. GAINAX is dead and has been dead for years, people.
Sankarea 01: Zombie moé? Zombie moé. The first episode raised a lot of flags that it might become another wacky harem hijinx show with an undead theme, but at the same time it kept an otherwordly ambient reminiscent of SHAFT shows (not surprising considering the director). I will watch it until it offends my sensibilities.
Accel World 01+02: The protagonist is a complete twat and the premise seems to be the ultimate in male-gamer nerd fantasies with vengeance plots against bullies and an ojousama that falls in love with you because of your gaming 5|< ! ll z. Show of the season? no

I will watch it until it offends my sensibilities.Unless they add new characters for the cartoon, it won't turn into a harem. Not that most of the characters aren't girls, it's just most of them aren't into cat-face Furuya. I haven't been able to watch the first episode yet; I'm looking forward to hearing Babu.
Zombie of the Dead's first episode pretty much wrapped up what the show is about.
Ozuma has killed my crack theory that Bynas is Sam's mom already, but at least it did so by making everyone's (except Maya's) relationships pretty clear.
Ozma continues to be awesome. Caught the first ep of Space Brothers yesterday, and that was also fantastic.

You know what was crazy? The latest episode of Fate/Zero. I mean, it wasn't very complicated plot-wise or anything, but we got the fighter jet part that made me want to watch this thing to begin with, and it was all I hoped it would be. Well, maybe not all, but it was rad, none the less.
Also, I have heard Babu. It was a fine "babu." The rest of the show was pretty good, too. I like some of the liberties they took with Sankarea, like putting a bowling alley in the abandoned building. I'm curious as to how they're going to direct the rest of the show, though, since they made the first episode really dark in bits, but most of the time Sankarea is kinda cheery and silly. On a different note, one thing the comic has going over the cartoon is that you can't linger over all the awesome zombie goods Furuya has all over in the cartoon like you can in the comic. The reverse of that statement is it's awesome that all Cat-face's zombie toys carried over to the cartoon. That right there makes me feel like DEEN might actually care about this silly zombie romcom.

Saint Seiya Omega 02
Slownen gonna slownen. I am still liking this, but I can see people being put off by the pacing. Just like Heartcatch Precure, this show might work better at half the length.
Mirai Nikki 25
The problem with this trite is that you cannot expect to sell this as an emotional climax when you've treated the entire world with the utmost of incompetence and ridiculousness. It doesn't fit the tone of the story, and it's even more jarring that you are introducing all this sentimental revelations by combining it with Dragon Ball shenanigans.
On the other hand, it was very well animated, to the point where I found it distracting because the rest of the show looks like utter shite.
Space Bros 02
;_; Mutta...
The most emotional animu of the season, and probably the most honest. Too bad that people aren't too high on it for not being the same old shitty shit as usual.
Ozma 04
If there's one thing this show does good it is the action submarine battles. The bad: everything else.
Mysterious Girlfriend X 01
Less trashy than expected and even quite reminiscent of nineties animu. Saliva swapping is a weird fetish, but at its core is nothing you haven't experience on a kiss before. It was very well animated too.
Area no Kishi 14
Even Captain Tsubasa had better animation than this. I am only watching it for the Nadeshiko Japan shenanigans, because everyone else is a twat.
And one more I just came around to watching even though it was first shown like four years ago:
Sonic: Night of the Werehog
http://i.imgur.com/KO2Sy.jpg
This was pretty good. Not only the animation was expressive and fluid, but the script isn't half bad. It's a silent short with no dialogue so you don't have to worry about the stupid Sonic voice acting, but even so the sound effects were supreme. It's short and inoffensive too: about ten minutes long and there's hardly anything to scoff at.
There's a myriad of complaints you can make about Sega's in-house departments, but their CGI studio is among the best. I would say they are even better than Squeenix's. 5/5 gotta go fasts

The problem with Mirai Nikki is that it's Mirai Nikki. You signed up for a trainwreck ending when you started watching a cartoon based on a completed comic with a trainwreck ending.
And ghosts are often moe. Like, top of my head, Hanyuu, Yuyuko, (http://www.nuklearforums.com/showpost.php?p=1193791&postcount=30) that kid from the first chapter of Bleach, Hachikuji.

The ( o ) ( o ) of the woman named Fujiko Mine 02
http://i.imgur.com/erZTKl.jpg
It's a good thing that the art is as expressive as it is, because the animation was very choppy at times. It gave the episode a very strange "vignette" feeling instead of the moving painting one of the pilot. It worked despite that, and in a way it accentuates the stagnation both main characters live throughout the story.
The narrative, on the other hand, was much stronger than last week's. It went beyond the simple sexy-action plot of the first episode and became something a lot more personal and engaging. It's nice to know that the entire thing won't be just tits and guns, even if I am well satisfied by said tits and guns.
Tsuritama 01
http://i.imgur.com/1mfJh.gif
Started really slow, but things got going as soon as Haru met Yuki. The colour design is really impressive and the water animation sumptuous. The amount of beautiful non-derivative anime airing this season is making me hopeful that maybe anime doesn't have be all trash moéshit.
Goddamn Haru is genki as fuck.
Kids on the Slope 01
http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m21ebbJLr81r84epao1_400.gif
This hit all the right notes for me where Tsuritama couldn't regarding the "anti-social angsty teenager meets a more vivacious and sporadic boy" element. It is essentially the same story told more subduedly: Haru's over-the-topness was obviously alienating (lol) in nature, whereas Sentaro seems like a dude I would meet somewhere and totally become bros with.
What can I say about Watanabe's direction that hasn't been pondered before? I hate to use the word, but the whole thing has a cinematic style missing from most anime today. It's nothing at all like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, but it clearly is made by someone who knows what the fuck he is doing. I feel relieved.
...it can't all be honey and roses, right? Of course it can't, this is anime. Shit's gotta suck at times:
Medaka Box 02
This is the worst thing in the history of worst things ever. The art is bad, the animation is stiff, the music is generic, the humour dull, the characterisation cliché, the premise stupid, and everyone is a twat. Also, furries:

Sankarea 02
It's... not trash like I was expecting! It's not haremshit! Praise to the heavens, for DEEN is risen!
If this were any other animu I bet the disturbing backstory included here would have been shown with much more levity. This show is proving to be very strong despite the offensive OP and the (unsurprisingly) lewd camerawork. Like, seriously, I wanna rip my ears out every time I listed to that fucking OP.
Ginga e Kickoff! 01
http://i.imgur.com/pmqnW.jpg
They are playing football! And it doesn't look like shit!! It even has a main character named Erika who is all about girl power! It's not like The Knight in the Area where I was expecting some nice-looking matches with decent animation but got cardboard-cutout crap. I didn't care for the melodrama, nor the cast full of dipshits (Seven aside). I just wanted football, and that didn't deliver.
Then I went on to this. The football animu of my dreams.
Eureka Seven AO 01
Maybe I'm just too critical after watching a lot of great animu last night, but I didn't like it. It felt like a disaster movie where they didn't even attempt to make the characters relatable, to the point where the obvious love interest is an asthmatic girl in a rather vicious attempt to make her as moé as possible. The episode is full of character introductions and it made it lose a lot of focus. I understand this is done to give the events a grander scale, but instead of getting engaged I end up confused because of the multitude of factions and terms introduced. The first episode of Eureka Seven accomplished the "grander than life" vibe without having to resort to such idiocy, and even the sentimental element (Renton and Eureka vs Ao and Eureka) was inserted into the plot more naturally.
There's also a lot of expository dialogue going on. There's a moment when the band of dealers or whatever explain to each other what the hell are they doing and with whom they are making business with no other motivation than to make the audience privy of the plot. Shouldn't they have discussed these shenanigan before setting off? Not to mention stupid dialogue like "there's a giant hole now where the explosion occured" while showing said giant hole. Redundancy of the worst kind.
Like I said, maybe I'm just too discerning after last night. It looked very nice and it sounded gorgeously. I am just disappointed because this is the animé that has seemed the most "animé" out of everything I watched this season when they could have easily done without all the fluff. Imo Guilty Crown did the same type of pilot episode much better.
GAINAX isn't dead, they just don't give a fuck about anything that isn't self-referential nerd humor and stopped pretending otherwise when their Getter Robo homage show made them a shitload of money.
The only two people worth giving a shit last decade at GAINAX were Anno and Imaishi, and both have already left for greener pastures.

Trying to get a group together to watch Millennium Actress, as it's one of my favorite movies. Got two people down for it already, but I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone else is interested. We'd be watching it 7PM Pacific tonight.

I hate how making a story about music makes me instantly invested in it.

Saw Accel World 01.
I get it that the protagonist's avatar is a piggy 'cause his bullies were, well, bullies.
But why the fuck is he a dwarf!?

Smile Precure 11
An old lady squatting in the grass shouting at bugs is undeniably the best fight scene in the show so far. You don't even know how serious I am.

Aw shit, Fate/Zero 16 is out? Gotta watch it.
Also, on Fate/Zero 15:
SPIRIT BOMB SLASH
It's weird how everyone blatantly acted like they knew who Saber and Gilgamesh were, but then Iskander goes "Oooh hold on I think I know who this blonde fellow is." and everyone looks surprised at Excalibur even though they knew who Saber was.

Can't really remember the events but it might be that Lancer and Rider both figured out who the King of Knights was, but never bothered to tell their masters.
Rider had a guess, but only confirmed it after seeing Archer's noble phantasm spit out an ancient alien warship.
