So.
Kimbra (http://www.youtube.com/user/kimbramusic)
Walk off the Earth (http://www.youtube.com/user/walkofftheearth)
Gotye (http://www.youtube.com/user/gotyemusic)

I was introduced to all three recently by that one video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9NF2edxy-M&feature=BFa&list=UU9PEibgWOqZ-1I1JdxRmr6g)... you know, of that one song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY&feature=related).

(or, if you prefer, the mashup (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AawZ0-MFWQM&feature=related)!)
(also, Little Boxes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM8JhvfoqdA&list=UU9PEibgWOqZ-1I1JdxRmr6g&index=2&feature=plcp)! Why is it addicting?!)

And now I can't stop listening to them. I'm, like, almost obsessed.

Sheesh. Thanks, Internet. As if I didn't have enough to take up all my time.

(So, have you guys ever heard of 'em?)

As an Australian, our radio and TV got swamped by this guy when he released that song a year or so ago. Basically you'd have to be deaf not to have heard him.

I love these music threads, but they always die so quickly.

I like the radio because it's just less hassle than fussing with my phone or iPod or whatever, and I know that things get overplayed but DAMN 'Somebody That I Used To Know' is just super annoying to me now. It's even worse than 'Pumped Up Kicks'.

Kimbra is pretty alright, I need to check out more of her stuff.

Illustrative story: I was baffled that my friend apparently hadn't heard the song before, so I turned on the car radio to the local Top 20 station and sure enough it was playing. Then I turned it to the contemporary hits station and it was also playing (although about a minute behind). Then he admitted he had heard it before, he just thought it was a Police B-Side the entire time.

Also, pop song of the summer/year is Call Me Maybe. Like, it is known.

I like to imagine that the guy who came up with adding those fake syncopated strings was invited to the top floor of BigMusicCo where the CEO was waiting to put a bullet in his head to ensure that no one else would be able to use his genius.

Confidential to Weird Al: Listen to this song.

And then change all of the lyrics to be about internet memes. Send me 40% of all profits as a creator's fee.

I'm sorry Train... I know you've always had slightly odd lyrics and that's kind of your 'thing', but "Just a shy guy looking for a two-ply Hefty bag to hold my love" may be the worst line I've ever heard in a song.

Welp, I thought this was going to be a summer where I just tracked down every indie band's cover of "Call Me Maybe" but then my Certified Musician Girl Crush went and released a new album, so it's time to put away childish things and all and accept the new paradigm.*

*Mostly blatant lies, I'll still seek out Call Me Maybe whenever I listen to the radio...or whenever I get bored really.

One of my favorite parts of Michael Showalter's standup routine is when he sings along to Teas of Jupiter and then note how almost every lyric is so overwrought it ends up sounding like a mongoloid attempting Bob Dylan.

Every music thread here I feel like I'm way too mainstream for the indie stuff, but I also don't like most pop. about a year or 2 ago i went through a major music shift, from being all about tough guy Hardcore to almost exclusively listening to pop-punk.

This is from Hit The Lights latest album. It is awesome!

Been listening to some jazz-fusion lately. Have some Weather Report:

EDIT:

Oh, and that Metal Gear Rising Trailer reminded me Depeche Mode still makes music:

Plus it's a good music video.

Ah, Weather Report. One of the most amazing jazz bassists out there.

Now, VNV Nation anyone?

WARNING: Tear-jerker.

Man, I thought Irish bands were supposed to be more upbeat, haha. Of course they are more of an electronic band from what I see in the links at the end there...

Daggummit.

I looked for "covers" of "Call me, maybe", and now I'm also addicted to friggin' Goot (http://www.youtube.com/user/gootmusic). Lousy Lumenskir making me find music I like.

Also: dudes, ugh, Storm Large and Kanye West*. Everything else has been great, though.

* Yes, this is total opinion, not fact.

I always like that the Official Pop Song of Summer (Billboard #1! Billboard #1!) both serves to give everyone a common reference pool* and allows lesser known bands to get some more exposure with covers.

*Seriously, this song is like a poppy Turing Test. Anyone who doesn't like it should be immediately quarantined to ward off potential android infiltration.

HOWEVER, having said that, we have officially moved into stage 3: Mashups are here y'all!!

Call Me Maybe v. Walking on Broken Glass (http://rostam.tumblr.com/post/25024686262/call-me-on-broken-glass-this-one-is-strictly-for)

Also, Rap Re-Re-Re-Remixes are here...honestly not sure if that's phase 4 or something closer to phase 3.5. Anyways, I liked what I had heard of Kitty Pryde before, using Call Me Maybe as a backing track was sort of icing.

Of course, the inherent problem is that if you use the vocals only you miss out on dem strangs, but if you use the instrumental you miss out on "Aand all theotha boys" which is one of the greatest vocalizations for a pop song. The solution, of course, is to re-listen to the original.

Well, I didn't like "Call Me, Maybe", but I'm not a fan of music that is not...aurally challenging.:smug::smug::smug:

EDIT: I like the TAY ZONDAY version.

ANOTHER EDIT: Fixed.

Guys, my Song Of Summah 2012 officially has a music video! And it's just DIY enough to be on the right side of whimsy-twee continuum!!

I like the Carly Rae Jepsen version.
Not sure if joking, or attempting stage 2 infiltration...

For some reason I misread that video as that guy being Carly Rae Jepsen, when I was like wait isn't that Tay Zonday? And it was. So what I meant was I like the Tay Zonday version.

Hu-man.

Magus, yes, they are primarily an electronica band. They tend to experiment with other techno genres, however. Examples:

D2NjK95D8mQ

ym3qVev9-Yc

H-_BGjvTGdI

6TgjRC9oPWY

I think, really, I like them so much because their beats are amazing and the voice is not a droll monotone 'I'm trying to sound as much like Ben Stein as possible' voice.

In other news, Goodnight Argent's piano cover of their own song.
