View Full Version : Summer Sun Means Time for Cartoons: The Summer 2012 Anime Thread

We totally skipped the spring season.

This summer is full of sequels! Remember Moyashimon? That one with the agriculture school and a dude who could see microbes who looked like this:

http://tsholden.com/files/thumbs/moyashimon.jpg

Well, Moyashimon Returns starts July 5.

Also, Yuruyuri, Dog Days, that Horizon show you guys hate, Lagrange is back after a season off, as well as continuations of Space Bros, Sainto Koga, and other stuff I guess. Is Sankarea going for more than twelve episodes? The anime has just finished the introduction, but if it goes much further we'll have main characters who aren't in the theme song...

New stuff that I'm interested in:

Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita (Humanity has Declined): It's about a human ambassador to the fairies who have inherited the Earth after our decline. The first promo opens with talking dead chickens. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULadqF0-uKw) So, whimsy and weirdness seem to be in order with a pastel color pallet. Maybe I'll be completely wrong about what this show ends up being like I was with Moretsu Pirates, but that turned out ok, anyway.

Uta Koi: It's, like, a period piece loosely based off the Hyakunin Isshu, a.k.a. those poem cards from Cards and Crying (oh, and Chihayafuru has a second season announced, just don't know when). Maybe I just want to watch cartoon people in kimono, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

Blood Lad: A vampire obsessed with Japanese nerd culture (an otaku, if you like) falls in love with a human who dies, and he attempts to resurrect her from a ghost. I figure if writing synopses like that are part of why I watch anime, I may as well watch the shows that let me write them.

As for stuff that's done or finishing or whatever the spring stuff we skipped, Fate/Zero had a sad, sad ending for everyone but Waver and maybe Kiritsugu is you ignore the whole losing his daughter forever thing. Sankarea is still full of male gaze just like the comic, but I like Furuya enough to enjoy it anyway. Korra isn't anime. Sakamichi has nice music and painful highschool romance, plus I was made aware of a seventies student protest movement mirroring the student protest movement in the States. Learning!

And Smile Precure is still the best time of the week. Only three more weeks until Clown Satan is revived. I shouldn't be excited about that; it's a bad thing!

What cartoons are you people excited about?

I think I'll watch Sword Art Online.

And...

That's it I think.

Noooot actually anything I'm all that interested in, though, except for Berserk.

Fate/Zero had a sad, sad ending for everyone but Waver and maybe Kiritsugu is you ignore the whole losing his daughter forever thing.

Kiritsugu had like the absolute worst ending in the entire story, but you could have probably seen that coming.

Tales of symphonia is getting more OVA, neat. Though I'm currently busy watching the dub of Casshern Sins and Deadman Wonderland.

Saber's ending was the weirdest, how she made Lanselot want to kill because she never tried to solve the situation with herself, Guinevere and Lanselot.

You know what I forgot while I was busting through that opening post? Other than the obligatory chart? Eureka Seven AO is actually really good, especially this last episode. I'm rather happy as a fan of the original series.

Also, I considered Sword Art Online, but it's, like, "The hero is the best videoman in the videos" wish-fulfillment or something. Let me know if it's fun despite that; I might watch it with a recommendation.

DO NOT

i repeat... DO NOT watch Nazo no Kanojo X.

The sheer amount of WTF this anime serves is literally a step above what you guys are used to.

Ditto on the Tales thing, and I see a couple of Code Geass spinoff miniseries too, but what's that Kenichi thing? An OVA? Just some extra behind the scenes stuff?

And when is part 3 of rebuild of Evangelion supposed to come out?

And it seems Dakara Boku Wa, H ga Dekinai is trying to be a riff on Ah My Goddess?

Empathic drool fetishes are really not that bizarre.

I give it like a 6 on the weird-o-meter.

This fall, apparently. In Japan, at least, no idea when it'll get subbed.

So a friend told me about Sword Art Online, and it's pretty cool. That is all.

I saw the first two episodes so far.

Not bad.

Friend has told me they're cutting some hentai content from the light novel, apparently.

I'm okay with that 'cause if I want to watch porn I'll just go watch porn.

Double-posting 'cause I just saw Sword Art Online 3 and 4. It's weird but also interesting how they're taking stories so far apart. Also, why does the episode with sexual overtones involve a girl that is agreed to be basically a little sister to the protagonist?

"Two years of seman flowing endlessly into Asuna" is truly a line for the ages. It got me to watch it.

It is alright so far, but from what I understand after Vol 1, the LN just falls apart.

isn't this show the same as Accel World?

Accel world was kinda neat and less softcore porn about itself though...

...it still some, but it's anime. C'mon...

Ryong

This contains far less fanservice and general softcore porn than Accel World.

Because it isn't the light novel.

Same author, same universe. Also Accel World is apparntly more "hardcore" on the porn side because there is from what I understand a rape scene.

Sword Art Online is closer to .Hack though.

There's also the whole deal with Kirito not being as socially awkward as the protagonist of Accel World so there isn't a whole lot of "oh shit she's touching me whatdoIdowhatdoIdo" and such.

Also, if the screencaps from the site I know is translating both is any indication, Accel World also has some girl asking for the protagonist to look up her dress.

What's with some of these strange ways of denoting a sequel?

a pair of musical notes, I suppose I can get as a sequel name, but just slapping an apostrophe on the end of the original series title?

I just pronounce an extra "es" at the end and it at least sounds distinct.

Also, I repeat that you guys should be watching Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita. So far we've had two two-episode arcs, with the fifth and sixth looking to follow suit. It's about fiction and how you can't trust The Man to do anything right. Sorta. It's also about horrible little fairy people. I think they're like how hobbits were supposed to represent the British in WWII, and so were weak, lazy, and unremarkable except for a spot of bravery, except they represent the developed world in the twenty-first century, so they're weak, lazy, gifted with unimaginable power, and don't care about anyone but themselves except as something amusing or pitiable. Or something like that, maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Oh, and pretty colors.

Sword Art Online has been pretty good.

Weird how the censored content wouldn't be as fanservice-y as what content normally does get cut but whatever.

Just random drunk thoughts, but Uta Koi has the best opening of all the shows I'm watching, Yuru Yuri note note has nice animation on its double-takes and face-faults, and Humanity has Declined just spent two episodes developing a single English pun.
